📖 - Video Description:
METRONIDAZOLE TREATMENT FOR DISCUS FISH
In this video I will show you how I will try to treat a discus fish with metronidazole (FLAGYL).
This discus fish is the same one I treated a few months ago with Sera Flagellol.
He showed the same symptoms as last time, but this time I treated him in a hospital aquarium.
The medication I used was with metronidazole.
There are several methods of treatment with this medicine, but I used one that was not so aggressive to the fish, as this will not be the only treatment that it will do.
I had a treatment where I used 8mg / liter of metronidazole, every other day, with water changes every day.
On the days that I administered metronidazole I made a 35% water change and on the days that I did not administer medication, I made a 20% water change.
Since this medicine is for humans, I raised the water temperature to 34ºC to get as close as possible to the body temperature of humans.
I hope the fish gets better, and that this video will be useful for you to be able to help your fish ...

@@PSKaqua I need a suggestion from you. I am facing a big problem. The pH of my Discus tank is increasing even though I use 100% RO water. Before putting water in the tank, I take an empty bucket and put an air pump in the water and leave it for about 12 hours. Only water, air pump and an empty bucket and after 12 hours I add Seachem Discus buffer. For some time the pH comes between 6-7 but then on checking it again, it automatically reaches 8. The pH does not remain stable. I have tried everything but it is not becoming stable. This happens when I add air pump to the water. Without air pump, it remains perfectly fine.

Hello my friend!!! It depends... normally fish have hexamita and can live with it as long as they don't have a low immune system due to stress, poor feeding, etc... I understand what you are saying and it has all logic, but I preferred to observe the others, after removing the fish to the hospital tank. The others were fine and kept well.

Hello my friend! Sorry for the late reply... In the initial phase of the treatment, I don't think it makes sense to feed them, because it will only worsen the quality of the water. When the treatment is over and they are already eating, yes, I think it will make sense, also because they need to get stronger.

@PSKaqua 10 месяцев назад
I'm sorry to hear that you're facing this problem with your fish again. It's possible that the environment in your large tank could be contributing to the recurring health problems. Make sure the water parameters are suitable for your fish species, including temperature, pH levels and filtration. Or there may even be something in the main tank that is re-infecting, creating a secondary infection. Also, consider isolating the fish in a quarantine tank for a longer period of time after treatment, to monitor its progress before reintroducing it to the main tank.

@PSKaqua
@PSKaqua 2 года назад
Hi Thugster!!! Possibly the 5 days was not enough to break the parasite cycle. Although, in the treatment I did, I administered 5 doses, I spaced them out over the 10 days, which broke the cycle of new parasites. Yes, I fed the discu with small portions of frozen food. The one he wouldn't eat, I vacuumed it up so as not to spoil the water. At first he wouldn't eat, but he started eating well from the 4th day of treatment.

8mg per litter. "Do the math"? 80L x 8 equals 640mg or 0.64 grams? Tell me why one gram?
@PSKaqua
@PSKaqua 2 года назад
Hello my friend!!! I really got the math wrong in the video, but mark it right away with a comment marked with the correction. The recommended dosage and that I did was 1 gram for every 75/80 liters (1gr for 20 gallons). In this case, the correct would be 12.5mg/liter and not 8mg/liter. 12.5mg x 80liters = 1000mg (1gram) So the question of overdosing does not arise here, what I did was underdosing. 👍🏻

Since this medicine is for humans, I raised the water temperature to 34ºC to get as close as possible to the body temperature of humans.😂😂 Nonsense however parasites don't like this temp.
@PSKaqua
@PSKaqua 6 месяцев назад
Hello my friend!!! 😀 I understand your skepticism about this topic, but it's not as absurd as you say it is... Let's see: Body temperature can affect the absorption of medicines because it can alter the speed of digestion and the permeability of the gastrointestinal mucosa, which is where you want to act. For example, drugs that are more soluble in water are more easily absorbed at higher temperatures. As I want metronidazole to be as solubilized by water as possible, in order to be better absorbed by the fish, the temperature can be increased. Of course, there is controversy, because by increasing the temperature, I can also increase the growth of malignant bacteria, but as you say very well, it can kill certain parasites that don't survive at high temperatures. But just as I don't know if the drug is photo-sensitive, I prefer to be safe and turn off the light during treatment, in this case, I prefer to increase the temperature to give the treatment a better chance of being more effective. I don't know if it's necessary to increase the temperature with metronidazole, but I prefer to be safe, because I think it's logical. Sorry for the long text, but I wanted to give my opinion. 😉 But if you can argue your point, I'd appreciate it, because nobody knows everything and I'd like to learn. 😊🤜🏻🤛🏻

@PSKaqua
@PSKaqua 9 месяцев назад
Hello my friend!!! I'm sorry, but I didn't understand anything you said. However, I'll try to explain. The hospital tank is only 80 litres and the fish to be treated is an adult discus. If I lowered the water level, I'd lower the ratio of water to discus and I'd have a much greater degradation of the water. Flagyl, as you know, is a drug developed for humans, and therefore designed to perform better at temperatures close to human temperature, i.e. 37°C. High temperatures don't dry out fish skin, where did you get that idea?!!?!?!!? By the way, this guy managed to cure the fish this way... how do you usually save them? 😉☺️
