Mets Win Series/ Giants on way to Superbowl

October 27, 1986. While the Mets were beating the Red Sox in Flushing, Queens, in East Rutherford NJ, the Giants were thumping the Redskins on their way to victory in Super Bowl XX!. For a New York sports fan, this was a night to remember. I borrowed a Sony Walkman (remember those?) so I could listen to the Mets while shooting the Giants from the sideline. Scott Kremer was my sound tech that night and NJN Sports Director, Pat Scanlon, put the story together. Joe Martin was the editor.
We won a Philadelphia local emmy for this feature.

1986 is the reason I have always been a New York Mets & New York Giants fan even though I was only six years old at the time. :-)

I'm one of those Mets/Giants fans, albeit 6 years old in 1986 and too young to appreciate it. At least with the Giants, there have been two thrilling Superbowl titles in the years since. The Mets on the other hand......

Plenty of us DO exist. I had a mid-term exam the next morning. I watched game seven that night. I did not get to bed until 2AM at the earliest. What an awesome night. I went to bed a very happy World Champion Mets fan.

I am a New York Yankees and Giants fan, and that was hilarious. Usually Yankee fans hate the Mets, but it's WAY better than the Red Sucks winning! GO NEW YORK!

I'm Mets and Giants, and there's plenty of fans that support either Mets/Giants or Yankees/Jets. It's not like the old days where the fans supported the same teams in the MLB and NFL.

Man the analog reception on those portable TVs or even Sony Watchmen sets back in the day was something else. Many tuned to NBC 4. But this old NJN News report really put both sporting events in perspective.

While I was never born in the 80's, as a Mets/Giants/Knicks/Rangers fan, this makes me feel proud to see my 2/4 of my favorite New York sport teams win the World Series and advance to/win the Super bowl.

Great Moment for NY Sports with the Mets and Giants winning it all. 1969-1970 was another great moment for NY Sports with The Knicks, Mets, and Jets winning it all.

As a Mets/Giants fan 1986 was my best year . The World Series, The Super Bowl, and Jack Nicklaus wins the Masters.

I'm a Jets fan, so I really didn't care too much about the football side, but after the Mets won, I couldn't sleep I was so excited. I was 13 during that year, so my dad let me stay up for all the games.

Holi crap, you are right! How is it possible that I have memories from watching both games?! I remember Rypien's TD pass & how the commentators were mentioning how Joe Gibbs had tricked the Giants by having Rypien throw the opposite way off a roll earlier in the season. But I remember being on the phone with my father during the bases loaded 1 out chances each team had in the 8th.

While most people here probably know why Game 7 of the World Series was played the same night of MNF, some may not know, so here goes...Game 7 was rained out on Sunday night & had to be moved to Monday...which obviously made for a great night for NY Sports...oh, BTW, GO GIANTS!!! :-D :-D

The Giants and Redskins would play at the same stadium 5 years later at the same time as the classic Game 7 of the 1991 World Series. That time, the Redskins would come back from 13-0 down at halftime to win 17-13 and they would go on to win the Super Bowl that year.

@MrFriggoff The Jets originally played in Shea and the Giants originally played in Yankee Stadium. Most alliances were made that way.

What a season in New York- the Mets won the World Series and the Giants went on to win Super Bowl XXI, 2 1/2 months later!!! Nothing like a World Series-Super Bowl championship double in the same city and that's happened, numerous times(1970, 1979, 1986, 2004)!!!

@EddieNeverSleeps NJN was based in Trenton, that's in the Philly DMA. Kind of ironic that you'd win an Emmy in that town for a package honoring the two teams they hate most.

Ill bet if the Jets had a game at home on October 27, 1996 on Sunday Night Football and if the 1996 World Series went to a game 7 the crowd would probably be going nuts from beginning to end about the Yankees and not give 2 shits about the Jets throughout the entire game.. lol.. since the Jets were winless up to that week (In reality the Jets played Arizona on the road and won for their only victory in an eventual 1-15 season)

@terracottapie Hmm, so when news organizations run polls of 100 - 1000 people to determine ratios for large metro areas, that's not a good indicator? I never said "no Giant fans are Met fans". I just said the majority of Mets fans are Jets fans. I stand by that. Don't take a generalization and apply it to all circumstances.
