President Reagan hosts the 1986 New York Mets in the Rose Garden of the White House. Mets owner Fred Wilpon remarks. Mets players include Gary Carter, Dwight Gooden, Howard Johnson, Bob Ojeda, Jesse Orosco, Rick Aguilera, Ed Hearn, Roger McDowell, Lee Mazzilli. Vice President Bush also in attendance.

I am a HUGE Atlanta Braves fan...but those mid-80s Mets teams *were* awesome. Keith Hernandez should be in the Hall.

In fact, Reagan is credited with making these major sports champion team visits a tradition and these were hardly organized as well as they are today. Prior to that, there would be the occasional invites to athletes and teams. Reagan was PR savvy. ('85 Super Bowl Bears visit was postponed due to the Challenger disaster)

There's always an asswipe to take the wind out of the sail... that moment was reserved for sports...NOT politics...there's a time and a place for everything.. while a president is acknowledging the accomplishment of a baseball team and people are in a celebratory mood, politics should be left outside... although it came at the end of the event, it just sours the whole moment. The major consensus among sports fans is that politics should be on the outer gates of the sports arenas...sports has always been a major escape from the daily grind and politics. That's why the foundation of the Olympic movement was created.
