To be fair since he is talking about himself he might have felt the need to give more explanation so it doesn't look like he is being biased for himself or he ended up thinking about why he placed himself there more so because he knows his career very well of course and ended up saying more because of that

Armada is so good that you could make a video about just "Armada" - Armada lowest placing in the last years since 2011 , was 5TH PLACE. 7 STRAIGHT years of not even touching 7th place - Armada is THE BEST doubles players of all time, he won with Android , Mew2king , Leffen and even with Shroomed. - Armada has this insane 4 straight EVO grand finals, this 4 straight GENESIS grand finals and have been in 6 STRAIGHT Summit Grand finals. - Armada has a positive RECORD against ALL players except SilentSpectre. - Armada has been at least TOP 2 since 2009, been Number ONE in 2011, 2012, 2015 , 2016. And if he is not Number one he is at least Number 2. - Since Armada became a god , he have only lost to The 4 Gods , Leffen , Plup , and Swdish Delight. Thats only 7 players. - Finally, Armada one trick is to win tournaments :)

It's hard to see even the possibility of it being challenged unless this game continues for decades. Even if current all time greats go on to have amazing streaks there's still the looming spectre of being behind Armada for the vast majority of their common career. Lastly, fun fact there's a retroactive elo tracking of smash players over time, and even in the end Armada went out on top (not to mention dominating Hbox doing it)

He is also down 0-2 in sets vs CaptainJack, but these sets took place in ‘06 when Armada has just switched from Marth to Peach so if these sets are a part of his ‘pro career’ is arguable.

I know this is about players and results, but if we're placing Mang0 higher because he pushed the meta ahead with a few characters... I wouldn't leave out M2K's Frame Bible that pushed the meta 40 years ahead. The impact he had on the way every aspiring pro player approached fights and their mindset was immeasurable. GOAT on impact and making Melee what is today.

Rainy Android I agree but he also said that was more of a tie breaker for the two of them. With that said I’m not super qualified to talk ab melee but I do know the M2K not only was so dominant for 08-09, but like he said a top 6 player for 12 years and that’s an argument to put him higher.

11. Chudat 10. KDJ 9. Azen 8. Isai 7. Mew2King 6. Ken 5. PPMD 4. Leffen 3. Hungrybox 2. Armada 1. Mango That's how I'd rank it, I'm surprised you didn't mention Isai or KDJ on there. Top 3 Is extremely close, to the point where they might as well all be equal. Leffen and Hbox are also very close, but I think Leffen falls behind just slightly in terms of consistency. Chudat is good, but I still wouldn't put him in top 10. Overall, I think it's very hard to rank the top Melee players in terms of skill. They were all excellent in their own way at their peaks.

This list was pretty good, my only complaint was that you talked at decent length about everyone's accomplishments on this list except for Hbox, the only thing you said about him was why you think Mango is better. Aside from that, great list.

The fact that he placed him above himself, and at 3rd. He also argued that hbox and mango ate tied. The only reason he put mango higher is mangos influence and his ability to dominate on many different characters. I know hbox plays other characters when he needs to, but hes still mostly known for his jigglypuff. I think m2k thinks very highly of him, probably seemed like he didn’t say much about becuz he was trying to explain the top 3 placements

I'm surprised he wasn't ranked higher than 7th imo. Yes, I am the first to admit that lasting 7 years less than the other gods is a good reason to be ranked lower (and I think that Hbox should be second with how things are going), but he has good records against many other players for a long period of time.

It stands to reason that the top 7 would have the 5 gods, the king, and the god slayer. But to be honest I really didn't expect Chudat at number 8, and now that I think about it, it does makes sense, but for some reason I never considered Chu to be up here, weird.

Chu is one of the most underrated players out there, mostly due to IC's which is understandable. Honestly loosing your legacy to wobbling is fairly karmic imo.

Thank you for mentioning Mango's use of multiple characters. I think it's more impressive that someone has been a top player with more than 2 characters, and how he had smash boards tripping out over his Mario.

More than playing multiple characters, the important thing is pushing the meta of different characters. Almost all the players in the list have pushed at some points the character they played and almost all top 7 players pushed multiple characters (beside hbox and ken).

@@jijmotorp3079 I think this is a somewhat interesting perspective. I agree that players who innovate more characters have done more for the game, and therefore deserve to place higher. But at the same time, those players generally switched characters because they had difficulty maintaining consistently high results playing with their original characters. Which is why people like Axe and Amsa are such big fan favorites. I think that both sides deserve a lot of credit, and one isn't necessarily better than the other. In every case, being a character specialist means losing to the same people over and over again, but sticking it out and learning how to play around your character's weaknesses until you can overcome them.

@@HeroZameshi the difficulty with that kind of accomplishment is giving well deserved points to some people without taking some points of the others. For example, ppmd did a lot to marth and falco (especially in the 'eutral game a lot of players now play like him) but i don' t think he was as impactful as axe for pikachu which is only one charac. But innovation, creativity and impact on the scene need to be rewarded. This kind of achievmentd also secure some spots to older players. Those players work hard to get good and win tournaments but, even though they don't win tournaments, the impact and innovation they created through tjeir work wont be forgotten. Anyway my top 20 : 1. Armada (10) 2. Mango (9.5) 3. Hbox (9.5) 4. M2K (9.25) 5. Ken (9.2) 6. Leffen (9.05) 7. PPMD (8.95) 8. Chudat (8.7) 9. Plup (8.6) 10. Azen (8.5) 11. PC Chris (8.35) 12. Axe (8.3) 13. Isai (8.25) 14. Everyone on here is making great points, but I also think that there is something to be said about someone who plays characters that "arent meta" and still wins. Yall know Im talking about puff and Hbox. Especially when EVERYONE literally played his counter match in Fox for years. Even Armada changed. Yes, being good with multiple characters is a great case for your skills. Yes, making your main change the game, and your competition changes to your main, is a great case for your skills. Also, playing a mid-tier character, and never changing, and still winning, even against unfavorable match up, a lot of the time, is also a great case for your skills. Im not saying that Hbox is more accomplished than Armada or Mango, Im just saying that generally he had the more difficult road, and eventually came out the winner over both.

Curious why you thought Leffen should have been ranked first in 2015, results wise I think Armada was solidly #1. Pretty sure he had a positive record on everyone, won evo, big house & summit and leffen had much lower lows (got 9th a couple times and armada only finished outside top 3 once). Summer rankings definitely could have seen leffen ranked first though.

Leffen won 4 out of the 5 summer majors in 2015, beat armada at B.E.A.S.T 5, Paragon, WTfox, and FC return and completely dominated his peach to the point that Armada gave up on peach against leffen and went fox. He then lost a 2 out of 3 match at Evo, a tournament where Armada avoided him, Mang0, and most of the other top players besides Hbox. M2k said first half of 2015.

I think hungrybox should have been higher. He has been one of the topp players for many years while managing a full time jobb. And once he started focusing 100% on melee he has been dominating. I am just saying that beeing one of the melee gods while having a 9-17 deserves a bit more credit.

Great list! Armada was the hardest brick wall I'd seen in Smash Bros. To the point where every time I saw someone play him in grand finals, my heart raced too high lol. I was so ecstatic when PPMD won Apex 2015 or when HBox won EVO 2016, truly BECAUSE Armada was such a damn excellent player, he put in so much work and deserves the #1 spot.

I don't think Hbox has an argument for #2 yet. From late 2010- late 2014, he didn't win a single major. Mang0 has been more consistent throughout his career and has been far more influential. I would also argue that PPMD is over M2K because M2K never won a super major and PPMD has 3 (Apex 2014, 2015, and P5). M2K may have been active longer, but PPMD has done more in his short career than M2k has in his ongoing career.

If we are talking about the best player ever in a given moment, as in the best anyone has ever played at one tournament or set, it is probably either Armada or Mang0. As far as the most dominant extended period of time, then I'd say Armada or Hbox.

KDJ was very good for his time but he did not stay in the scene for very long. Similar for people bringing up Isai. They were very influential and obviously center-pieces in the doc b/c of the role they played in that time period, but neither stayed in Melee's competitive scene like these players did.

Dragy Both of their peak results are very similar. It can be argued that both have had a better peak. I don’t know where you get the idea that Mang0 has been a consistent top player for about twice as long is Hungrybox. It’s pretty close. Mang0 DOES have a couple years longer, but they’ve both been top players for about 10 years. I recommend you check smash wiki to fact check yourself. Another factor is Hungrybox has been the very slightly better player in the last few years. I think it matters who was most recently better. Hbox has been the number 1 since Armada’s retirement

It's was a little weird at first seeing the old guys on the list but you presented your case for them well! Someone had to lock down consistent wins in the past to grow the scene and those guys you mentioned did just that. Super thankful that yourself and the other 4 gods stepped in to wipe the floor with everyone until PPMD stepped away and Armada retired because that's nearly a decade of legacy -- 5+ years of it were even well recorded! Thanks for making this, M2K, it's always refreshing to be reminded of how we (the community) got here.

Great video! Another interesting idea I'd like to see you explore, is who had the POTENTIAL to be among the top 10? e.g., players who had the raw skill but either didn't apply themselves or make a real attempt to climb to the number 1 spot. For example, Isai - if he was motivated, could he have become the undisputed best for his time?

I think m2k includes legacy. So like mango was better than hbox from 2008 till late 2016 then hbox stared winning more consistently. So hbox still has a few more years to catch up to the long tail of their legacy

Very objective analysis of your own greatness and placement. Depending on how much we weight longevity and total career value, I could see you even potentially cracking the top 3, as difficult as it would be to drop one of them to 4. As you said, top 3 is extremely close and debatable and depends largely on what criteria we choose to value and how we weight them.

I don't think it mattered one way or the other [that's virtually his words]. Anything with those 3 on top and Armada in 1st or 2nd would have been acceptable to him. The only reason I brought it up is because you agreed with every other part of his list. And you top 3 satisfied the conditions he laid out, so in other words by M2K's conditions they are the exact same list.

Armada is the LeBron James of smash. Mango is like Kevin Durant. Hungrybox is Kawhi Leonard. Mew2king is like Kobe. Devoted more to the game and deconstructed melee more than anybody has before. Anyone now who deconstructs melee’s inner workings is all because of m2k and nothing will take that away. Easily 4th. If you’re going by legacy, not just results, easily top 3.

It would've been very hard for m2k to make the case that he is above mango when considering only melee. It did surprise me at first that mango was over hbox but I think actual top melee players tend to rank hbox a little lower than he would be when considering objective results because they usually believe that playing puff requires less skill and therefore is of lower value (not saying this is a valid argument or not, but definitely something I've observed)

@@michaellayard5045 Top melee players also don't tend to discount early years as heavily as fans do, which is telling. I mean, until 2016, Mango was 24-7 on Hbox. Of course, Hbox has dominated him since 2016 to bring it to 41-38 (still in Mangos favor, though.) Mango has a better record vs Armada, they have almost identical records vs Leffen and vs PPMD, and Hungrybox has a much better record vs M2k. So, even despite Hbox being #1 rank for the last 3 years, he and Mango's top player matchup spreads are arguably pretty equal over their careers. Overall, their careers are pretty even when considering supermajors too, so M2k would have them tied if he could. But Mango has undeniably more influence on Melee than Hbox, so I think it's a fair tie-breaker for M2k to use. I don't really think his and others' rankings has much if anything at all to do with top player distaste for puff.

@@michaellayard5045 The perception that puff is easier to play has always confused me, to be honest. Hbox is currently #1 in pgr, but the next puff player on the current pgr rankings is #35, and the next puff after that is #50. Based on actual data, it is vastly more difficult to be among the best with puff than it is with fox, falco, marth, etc. Hbox being good with puff should be a massive point over mango, because mango was extremely good with a character that lots and lots of people are extremely good at, while Hbox stands alone as the only puff main anywhere near the top of tournaments.

@@bennettpalmer1741 1. Easier doesn't mean best. Puff is objectively easier in terms of execution than any other top tier. That doesn't mean she's the best character. As far as low representation not many people have the patience or the willingness to play puff. It's not like melee earns you much money so why spend so much time playing a character that most people find less fun. 2. Why would hbox get more credit for being number 1 with puff when mango was number one with fox, falco and puff at different points while having good secondaries? I don't see the logic in punishing someone for being good at multiple characters (although for the record I think an all time ranking should be based on only results and not even consider what characters are used)
