With COVID-19 restrictions still in place, we show you how we applied for Temporary Resident status at the Mexican consulate in Denver so we can RV in Mexico again, plus our little beach dog Scout sees snow for the first time. All the feels.
Our all-new RVing in Mexico Planning Guide is now available! Get all the details on visas, example documents for Temporary Residency, vehicle import permits, how to stay connected, choosing routes, driving safely and much more. Learn more ⬇️

As our Newstate Navigators have known for several months, we're planning to returning to Mexico! We decided back in June to go the route of temporary residents (Abbreviated "RT" in Spanish) instead of tourist visas because unfortunately due to COVID-19 you can no longer drive past the "free zone" areas along the US/Mexico border (and Baja) unless it is deemed an "essential activity" (translation: business purposes, emergencies, government sanctioned, etc). Every month since March, 2020, the USA, Canada, and Mexico continue to extend their driving bans, recently extended to October 21st, and it seemed too risky to chance whether the ban would be lifted. We decided to take the time (and higher fees) to apply for RT, as it will give us freedom to travel across the border for 1 year from when we reenter Mexico. A typical tourist visa is valid for 6 months, and is available even now for those who fly into Mexico, which still surprises us a little that there should be a difference between driving and flying into the same country?

We recently got our TEMPORARY RESIDENCY and LIVE in BEAUTIFUL QUERETARO MEXICO! We made the move with our two dogs. Our only regret is we didn't do it sooner.:-). Congrats!

@@NewstateNomads Thank you so much for the warm welcome! 💜 We did a lot of research and quite honestly, were initially planning on moving to the Yucatan Peninsula but due to the year round heat, decided that wouldn't be best for us/ our little dogs as a long-term home base. I came across Queretaro and discovered it had a VERY appealing climate and was growing due to many companies choosing to relocate their businesses here from neighboring Mexico City. It is very centraly located, has great amenities, yet wasn't a city that we considered very overpopulated. We have been told by the locals that it is one of the "more expensive" cities when compared to other Mexican cities however, still affordable when it pertains to housing costs.

Hi Lili! Yes, we were surprised at how seamless the process can be, although we didn't finish the second part due to unforseen circumstances that kept us in the US a bit longer. We can't wait to return to Mexico. We love your country! We didn't get the chance to visit Chihuahua on our first trip. But we fell in love with the culture, people and food while we were there. Retirees can show alternatively that they have pension/SS of a certain amount monthly, instead of the $25K minimum ongoing bank balance. The amount required is based on the current Mexican minimum wage; currently it comes to around $1945 USD/mo. for Temporary Resident or $3250 USD/mo. for Permanent. Did you point this out in your video? Because I got distracted and may have missed it. Same process applies with bringing bank statements for 12 months to *prove* this pension/SS is deposited in your name/account. Adding my *CONGRATULATIONS* !! Just to put a fine point on it: with this Residente Temporal Visa, you *are* allowed to cross the US Border by land into Mexico now with the Covid-19 restrictions??
@NewstateNomads
@NewstateNomads 3 года назад
Ann, apologies I guess my reply never posted? In a nutshell, first thanks so much for the great info! On our blog, we provide links to all the documents the Denver consulate sent us when we emailed with them before our appointment. Where did you find that info on SS/pension? Its so interesting the differences between the consulates, because if you check out the docs from Denver, they do not list accepting SS for temporary, only permanent. AND the amounts are different than what you mentioned, which we also found for income and investment amounts between different consulates. I hope someday to find out why there is so much variety with the requirements between Mexican consulates, maybe it's a regional cost of living? Regardless, thanks so much for watching, and I hope the info you provided is helpful to others considering temporary residency! -Howard

Great video. The only challenge I had two months ago in Los Angeles was the requirement on the bank paperwork (letter of verification and the statements), to have the "Bank Seal" on them. When one from the US sees that, most would automatically think of a circular bank emblem from a stamp. To make a long story short, it was just a stamp of the address of the bank, in my case, Bank of America. To make matters worse, originally I was under the impression it needed only to be on the letter of verification from the bank. When I brought all my bank statements, they indicated they wanted the stamp on the front of every bank statement. Fortunately, it was escalated to a manager who after a few minutes decided to approve me anyway, but it was a bit stressful at that moment after waiting a month for my appointment, having to schedule a follow-up 2 weeks later over this whole seal issue with a flight that was scheduled a couple of weeks after that, to have to worry about this seal. The consulate in LA really should tighten up their instructions and be specific about an address stamp versus a seal, but oh well :-). Also, at the consulate in LA, they showed me a picture of exactly how to fill out the immigration form on the plane. Unfortunately, their form was outdated and the fields with numbers didn't completely align with what the airline provided. That threw me for a loop and caused a bit of confusion at customs where the agent almost put 180 days when he needed to put 30 days. The good news is that I have my Temporary Visa as of last week :-).
@NewstateNomads
@NewstateNomads 3 года назад
Keith, that is so interesting! For Denver, there was no "seal" or stamp requirement, and I remember when emailing with the Austin consulate they had a requirement that you must login to the account in front of the agent to prove the amounts aligned with the copies you provided. Isn't it interesting the differences between the consulates on requirements and process? Glad to hear your application was successful, where in Mexico are you headed? Thanks so much for watching! -Howard

Scott, unfortunately we had to change our plans and couldn't complete the process in Mexico (meaning we will have to start over at a Mexican Consulate when we apply again). The good news is that the process in Mexico is quite straightforward and is mostly about collecting biometric info and issuing your residency card. You guys have a lot of guts! Did it ever dawn on you the implications of having mechanical failures on your RV? RVs have very unique and hard to obtain parts in Mexico. As an example, you have a failed powertrain part or electrical failure. What would you do in the Yucatan in a remote location? Just asking..

Thanks for watching, and it's a great question! We're on a Mercedes Sprinter chassis which are sold and serviced throughout Mexico, and the warranty covers towing even in a foreign country. You're absolutely right when it comes to RV house parts, very rare if not impossible to find locally in Mexico. We can say that our friends we travelled with had to order parts from Amazon at one point during our journey, and while there were higher prices for shipping, it is viable to get items sent to you. Hope you'll continue on the journey with us. 👍 -Howard

@NewstateNomads
@NewstateNomads 2 года назад
Rachel, thanks for watching and glad you found the template! I can't promise it is the same for all consulates, but this was exactly what we needed to complete for the Denver location. If in doubt, all locations should have an email or a phone number you can ask for specifics to their consulate. One thing that is DEFINITELY different will be financial requirements. It seems like each location has their own policies? 🤷‍♂️ - Howard

Got my visa in mid-October, and just did the canje procedure today in Guadalajara. Got there almost an hour early, so I was fairly close to the front of the line. I speak very little Spanish, but a couple of the agents there spoke some English so it was fairly painless. Longest wait was the hour prior to opening, and an hour between when I turned everything in and when I returned for fingerprints and photos. Then another 5-10 minute wait while they made my card. At least in Guadalajara, and I assume other locations, but I don't know which, they take the photos electronically, so you don't need the ones inm.gob.mx says you do. The long delays of days or weeks others have reported seem to also be a thing of the past, if you have all your paperwork in order. Oddly, I just noticed the issue date is 1 week ago. That I do not understand, unless maybe I started the form a week ago, but I don't think I did. Maybe they just clicked the wrong Wednesday.

Wait.....so you got the 1 year temporary residence VISA. But what if you just wanted the 180 day? I want to rent an apartment and stay there 6 months to be with my fiance (we'll get married there as well) who is from the Philippines which is currently closed to me because of the virus (and the US visa for her is almost a 2 year wait right now). I'm also self employed although I can show the bank deposits, get photo copies of my pay stubs, and provide tax records. I don't have anything like $25,000 in the bank (and definitely don't want to wait another year), so I need to find the best option.

you do not have to be a resident to buy property in Mexico, but no bank will take cash due to anti money laundering laws, unless you meant it's a bank transfer for the full amount of the purchase. depending where you buy the closing costs can be 10% and you may have to put the land into a trust. you should speak with a Reputable real estate person in whatever city you are looking at, it's not like buying property in the US. good luck.

If you haven't already checked out our companion article, we do have more info on the application process, including sample applications, instructions provided directly from the Denver Consulate, etc. I also recall that they only release new appointments a few times a month. For anyone reading , I live in San Diego. You can cross anytime you want for any reason you want. Its officially "essential travel" only, but that applies to Mexican nationals coming into 🇺🇸 . Americans travel the border freely.
@NewstateNomads
@NewstateNomads 3 года назад
Jeremy, you're absolutely right about entering Baja or the "border zone" that runs the entire length of the US/Mexico line. You can enter without much hassle. 👍 The issue becomes if you want to travel PAST the border zone in Mainland Mexico. For that, you need a stamped FMM (visa document) and a TIP (temporary import permit) for your vehicle. Throughout the mainland, there are immigration checks that we went through and needed to present them to immigration authorities. They are SUPPOSED to be restricting issuing those to essential travel right now during Covid-19 at land crossings, but we personally know people who have gotten both at the border without fuss. Thanks for watching! -Howard

Definitely interesting the difference between flying and driving, right? It's been that way since March, and I still haven't really found a decisive reason why the countries care more about people driving than flying in. Since Baja is in the "free zone" like the border zone that runs all the way to Texas, I would THINK it is still business as usual (meaning, no temporary import permits required and more relaxed rules to make it easier for border cities to continue commerce). We're living in strange times! Thanks as always for watching, Tara! -Howard

I’m in Baja at the moment and while the official word is only essential travel. I have seen a lot of tourists. Mostly California plates on the RVs. However, every few weeks one side or the other decides to enforce the rules. Which is confusing and inconvenient. You are doing the right thing getting your residency that way you cannot be denied or hassled you have a legitimate reason to be here. Plus the bonus of not needing border runs.

Good video! As an American, can I skip temporary residency and apply for a permanent residency directly? I am traveling full time. So, do Mexican embassies outside of US process TR and PR applications? Are non-Americans eligible to apply?
@NewstateNomads
@NewstateNomads Год назад
Thanks and great questions! Yes, you can skip to Permanent, but the requirements are significantly higher for financials. Check a consulate website for specifics on Permanent requirements. Also, temporary allows you to still have a foreign (IE USA, etc) plated vehicle in Mexico. Permanent you are SUPPOSED to have Mexican plates and Mexican drivers license (but of course, that's based on enforcement or when you are pulled over). Many people opt for temporary since it provides very similar benefits and is good for up to four years (1 year initial, 3 year renewal). Regarding RT and RP applications, yes, all embassies and consulates process them, and you start the process outside of Mexico. Most nationalities can apply (I believe certain country residents have different processes for higher security and scrutiny). Hope that helps! 👍 -Howard
