How to Move to Mexico
This week we finally got our temporary residency visas her in Merida, Mexico, and we're taking you along the whole process!
There has been a lot of talk on the Mexican RU-vid channels recently about how it's becoming more difficult to move to Mexico using only a tourist visa, something which used to be very common among foreigners who weren't quite sure how long they were going to stay here. While we still know plenty of people who have been given a 180 day tourist visa after landing, we wanted to show you our journey through the application, paperwork and appointments necessary to get our temporary residency visa to live legally and long-term in Mexico, in case you're looking to do the same! As always, let us know in the comments if you've experienced something different or have tips for anyone looking to start their visa application process!

No one clarifies if you are a couple if your income requirements are per each person or if the couple has a joint bank account do they count it together? Do you have to be married? What if one person is on social security and the other is not, but you have joint acct. trying to plan our escape from high priced Los Angeles right now!

Just an fyi - after the first year, you can renew for the full 4 year term all at once. You don't have to do a year-to-year thing, saving you trips to INM. REMEMBER - Dates in México are Day, Month, Year - Don't misread your residency expiration date!!!! You can start the renewal a month before your expiration. And yes, names have to be exactly what they are on your passport - as does your signature. You might want to check your residency cards and make sure they issued you a CURP number (like a social security number). It's usually printed on the front of the card somewhere. You'll need this number to do things like open a bank account. If you didn't get one, go back to INM. Congratulations! Edit: Day, Month, Year ... Day, Month, Year! Posting before the morning coffee = not a good thing! :)

Great video. Best I've seen of these. It's rare but you CAN get the visas from inside Mexico. You just have to hire a lawyer with connections to immigration (i.e. not just any lawyer). I've heard of people in Merida getting residency visas this way and I know a lawyer in La Paz that can do it. Connected lawyers can get all sorts of stuff done in Mexico. Also, if you're Murican try to get appointments in Vegas or Phoenix. They have pretty solid reputations for making the process easier.

They make the appointments for you and everything. No stress. Actually not that expensive.....a lot less than if you have to fly back to your home country to correct something.....others should think about that. Yes, we’ve heard LA can be trickier than most (we tried before we first left LA in 2020 but they required the income *plus* savings account, which meant they wanted us to show $35K in our savings account for the last year 😬). And we did go to the INM office in Mérida - we’re sure you could go to Progresso or Campeche as well, but this one was the easiest for us. Good luck on your process!!

Travis a& David, Love your videos perspective and taste in homes! just found you guys! We are in LA the West Valley, and wanting to move to Mexico to retire. We have questions about the financials and its very confusing about do you need the pensions for x dollars and the cash in the bank I thought it was either OR. But hoping to find a facilitator who can guide us to the right consulate so we can get residency. Seems the requirements are changing and going up all the time. Have you decided where you will make your home base? We are considering either San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, or Queretaro for the temperate climate less hot than LA at least, and hot less often.. and love the mountain/city views. Absolutely love your pick of places to stay the homes themselves stunning! Keep up the tours of the homes and adventures we will be watching!

Hey guys! Yes, the financial stuff can be a bit confusing (it’s typically OR, unless you go to the LA consulate in which case it’s AND 🤦‍♂️). There are people to help navigate the process - we didn’t use any so can’t recommend anyone, but if you search the expat Facebook groups for different cities, there are a bunch of recs! Good luck and keep us posted on your journey!

Congrats Gents... It's a stressful process but one that is SOOOO Much easier for Mexican nationals attempting to come to the US. KEEP your privledge in check! As a former long time resident of Mexico... and about to return AGAIN! WOOT WOOT! One thing I would add is make sure your Signature is EXACTLY the same as it is in your passport! Your passport will be the baseline for all legal verifications; banks, mobile service, tittles, leases, utilities etc. I have literally had an representative deny my signature as i signed it in front of them!!! GOOD LUCK EVERYONE! I can't wait for a Cafe Con Leche Meet UP in CDMX!

I just realized my note sounded like I was telling the gents to keep it in check... NOT AT ALL.. Cafe con leche does a brilliant job of keeping it all real and honoring the privledge that we have as Americans/Canadians. My comment was intended to keep those of us who get frustrated (me too!) that we are guests in a country that is not our own. They welcome us in a way they are not always welcomed in the US/Canada but espeically the US. Humimility goes a long way! HAPPY TRAVELS ALL!

One very important thing you forgot to mention is that you have only 180 days from consulate application approval to enter Mexico. And appointments aren't necessary at the office in my city either. Man, are you guys lucky regarding the 3 mistakes! Congratulations guys! - Anne

Congratulations on your visas and thanks for your videos on this process! We just got through the first steps in Houston. Very easy to get appointments- we emailed the consulate, they replied a day later, and we booked appointments for the following week. We needed to have 12 months of stamped or signed bank statements, copies of our passports, $48 each (only credit cards accepted), our marriage certificate (so we only needed one set of bank statements and a copy), and passport photos, which our consulate officer reviewed carefully during our appointments. Note that the lines to get into the Houston Consulate can be very long (and the parking lot packed) - we were late making it inside as a result. But the consulate is so busy that we had to wait once we got inside so it all worked out. The staff at the consulate were super nice and friendly! Next up, finishing the process once we get to our new home in San Miguel in a few weeks. Thank you for all of the extremely helpful tips!

Congratulations on getting your residency. FYI: you just need to secure an appointment within your 30 days, but your appointment can be after the 30 days and this is due to many INM officers not having appointments within the 30 days. And next year you can extend for 3 years, not 1 year

Hey Travis and David! Amazingly informative videos. My family and I just completed part one of the temporary visa process at the consulate in Philadelphia a few weeks ago. We leave for Mexico on May 1st. Headed to Cancun first, for vacation, then Merida on the 8th to live. I knew we had to make an appointment at INM but now I'm nervous about getting one within the 30 days. How can we schedule before arriving in Mexico? After a million calls to INM offices across Mexico we talked to someone in Guadalajara (husband is Puerto Rican and I speak decent Spanish as well). She said we had to wait to schedule once we arrived in Mexico. We were also told that we need Apostilles for our birth certificates and marriage certificate and to get them translated by a Perito Traductor. Did you two have to do this too? So sorry for all the questions! It was easier to prepare for the consulate visit. Unlike the D.C. consulate, in Philly they not provide any info about the next steps in Mexico. Been depending on vlogs and blogs.
@TravelWTravis

Hey Allison! Congrats on the first step! We made the appointment through this site (mexitel.sre.gob.mx) and you should be able to schedule it in advance (when you get to the INM offices in Merida, there's a sign on the door saying make the appointment online sooooo 🤷‍♂️). And as far as the birth/marriage certs, we didn't have to show our birth certificate and aren't married, so we're not sure what's all required for that! Hope that helps a bit and sorry we couldn't be more helpful!

Would also like to share my experiences with the up-to 180 day stay on the FMM. We're not ready for temporary residency as our trips are never more than 3-4 weeks at a time. Since the "changes" in the process of the up-to-180 days, which appears to have been around last September or so, I've entered Mexico four times: once in Mexico City, once in Veracruz, once in Cancún and once in León, Guanajuato. In both Mexico City and Cancún I was asked the purpose of my trip and how many days I was staying. Each time, the agent put on my FMM two days more than the number of days I told them. In Veracruz the agent asked the purpose of my trip. I said vacation and she said enjoy the sunshine and wrote 180 days. In León the agent didn't say a word. He just wrote 180 and I was on my way. We're not residents in any way. Just serial tourists for now so we haven't been negatively impacted by the process.

Congrats! But you baffled me with the “consulate” in Washington DC remark. Consulates are generally kind of like subsidiaries of a diplomatic mission in cities other than the location of the mission’s embassy. Mexico’s U.S. embassy-as with most countries-is in Washington DC. I see that within the embassy there is a consular division, so okay. But I still think you went to the Embassy, not the Consulate.

Great video guys. My only comment would be that, at the start, you rather underplayed the issue of NOT getting a 180 visa. You’re right that it has almost been automatic to get 180 days until recently. But, if the Facebook groups are any indication, for all the “lots” of people still getting 180 day visas, just as many are not. People report personal anecdotes of not even getting what they ask for when it’s LESS than 180. So, expectations must be managed. Best place to gauge how INM is doing is to jump into a FB group, like Expats in Mexico, and search on “visa” or “180” and start reading. You’ll start to get a sense for what each point of entry *generally* seems to be doing, what some of the key behaviors are that people think may have swung it in their direction, or not. Don’t just join the group and post a “hey, guys tell me how to get 180 days” kind of post (even though people do that every day). First, there is no definitive answer. And, responses will more than likely just give you a snapshot in time. You’ll get much more information reading dozens of posts/comments already posted. EVERY day. And then you can form your own conclusion based on what you want/need and what your point of entry is. Also, want to add that EVERY consulate literally does their business differently. My experience with the consulate in Seattle from start to finish, was different from yours in DC because the Seattle consulate’s process was different. Another good reason to do lots of reading in FB groups, a wealth of info on knowing what to expect. I recently posted, in detail, my experience with the Seattle consulate.
