We bought a 2001 2.5ltr V6 MG ZS 180 on eBay and fixed it up, including swapping the spoiler for the MG Rover ‘Extreme’ spoiler. In this video we collect, restore and feature a bit of history about the impressive MG ZS 180.
We hope you enjoy watching - please do hit ‘Like’, leave us a comment and subscribe to the channel as we have lots more to come, including our other MGs… we have a ZR 160, ZT 260 SE and MGF Trophy 160.
Thanks for watching.

Awesome cars. I’ve had a 180s since 2011 and I love my trophy blue one. The soundtrack, drive, performance and looks make a great unique combination that I haven’t found bettered by any other car.

I'm not too sure about Kenwood sound system but the new ZS's Yamaha is very impressive. On a race track as well as tackling windy roads, I don't think our ZS EV can match your ZS 180. I wish to see a car like yours in person.

@@t8polestarcyan22 I don’t have the radio on in my ZS that much. I have a lovely v6 soundtrack up front I prefer to listen to lol. The ZS180 from 20 years ago and Modern ZS EV are two completely different cars. The 180 was a budget race car for the road while the ZS EV is much more commuter focused.

@@chrispatterson4989 Too bad I didn't get to experience or even hear about the ZS180 before getting a ZS EV. If I have back then, I would've said NO to the crossover ZS. Still the ZS EV is a great commuter for cities. Range is more than enough for general use. The original ZS is a Honda which is sourced outside the Rover Group. The newer SUV ZS is sourced within the SAIC group, Roewe RX3 (no not Mazda RX3!). Now that I'm not sure about this but one thing I do agree is to have a nice Rover KV6 engine in the ZS180.

@@chrispatterson4989 The original ZS180, not only have a near 180hp engine but also a rear multi-link suspension as well as having a lower centre of gravity - naturally. The newer ZS either have a gutless 1.5L I4 or a 1.3L turbocharged I3 which is pretty much gutless. The only crossover ZS that have some balls on the straight is the EV. On paper the ZS EV only produces 141hp, 0 - 60mph in 8.5 sec (a lot faster than petrol models) AND to make things worse, a rear torsion beam suspension. Having said that the ZS EV have 353Nm of instant torque, the battery is mounted below the floor which helps to lower the centre of gravity and the ZS EV comes with a set Michelin Primacy 3. Those somewhat make up for that. Normally I intend to favour the ZS 180 cause I'm still a petrol head, still prefer internal combustions! The multi-link suspension on the ZS 180 is the big tick! I want one but already got the ZS EV long before I've heard about the ZS 180.

G'day from Sydney, Australia. Great film, well done. I've just purchased one of only 40 post 2004 face-lifted 180 manual ZS's imported. It has done 56,000 miles with full history, it is rust free and drives lovely with all important water pump, belts, thermostat etc etc done. with full service history from main dealer. Under bonnet looks factory fresh, it is so clean. I lived in UK for many many years till 2010 and owned many Brit classics and find it lovely that now back here in Oz I now own from what I believe is a rare post 2004 ZS in some peoples eyes in UK? Here the car is considered an 'orphan' as know one knows what it is (the pre 2001 to 2003 ZS models where not imported, or a few as private imports). I bought it last week and drove it home on the freeway which was a 2 hour plus drive, I soon found at different times on the drive home, different cars formatting on me - they were undoubtedly checking it out as they would never have seen one before accelerating away - or visa versa as I did!!! After all only 40 were imported - 18 years ago.

Many thanks for the reply. I've already noticed a number of motorists formatting on me on the freeway, know doubt checking out this strange looking car, before they even clock the MG badge. Few if any would have seen one before. Touch wood, can't believe how lovely this car is re condition, it looks like its a few years old, not 18 years. I've just realised that there is a new MG ZS, which is a 'soft' SUV type 5-door, going great guns here re sales, either the 'Excite' or 'Essence' models... a world away from the 180 ZS.

Another fabulous video Penntorr. Very knowledgeable as always and all the right facts. I think a lot of people write these off as a Rover 45 with a body kit (their loss, more for us). Did a bit of research, the original British ZS have rear multi-link suspension where the Chinese SAIC MG ZS have rear torsion beam... so surely the original ZS's handling and ride comfort is better (well it should be). Honda's original ZS or SAIC Roewe based MG ZS? Our ZS EV isn't bad esp. for local city commutes. That's because of EV's battery location and a set of Michelin Primacy 3s contributed to handling but it would've been a lot better if the new ZS have multi-link rear suspension. Honda Domani vs. Roewe Clever.... which one is better? Personally I want to go for lower centre of gravity sedans/hatchbacks. It sucks that this generation is going SUVs.

If I have driven the ZS 180, would I regret owning a SAIC MG ZS EV? Too bad I don't have a chance to drive the original ZS. The Chinese crossover ZS seems to have better interior as well as having a Yamaha sound system. The 0 - 60 mph between ZS 180 and ZS EV technically favours the Rover K series powered ZS 180. The Chinese electric ZS isn't too far off, 0 - 60 mph 8.5 sec. But in real life scenarios, the instant torque of the electric motor allows you get going quicker anywhere, anytime and at any speed esp accelerating from 35 - 70 mph unless the ZS 180 have an auto which you can get away with a kick down. Otherwise the ZS EV is faster in many real life scenarios. I want to favour the ZS 180 because it has lower seating position which give me better driving security and better road connection.

@t8polestarcyan22
@t8polestarcyan22 2 года назад
@@jurek.425 No, off course not. Point is, have MG lost the plot of what a model ZS was meant to be?! The ZS SUV is definitely a different car compared to the original ZS. So I'm worried about the model name ZS after I've heard about the original ZS. Before that I was surprisingly please with the ZS EV because it has surprisingly acceptable handling, surprisingly good battery range and interior build quality is good - solid build quality. After driving that EV, I still recommend that MG for local commutes. Having said that, after I've heard about the original ZS, I am wonder what have SAIC done to the ZS name? Off course there is MG 5 (in UK) but still got a crappy torsion beam rear suspension like the new SUV ZS. If I have driven a sporty sedan/hatchback original ZS, will I regret having the SUV ZS EV?

@@jurek.425 If you don't really like higher seating positions, higher centre of gravity then the petrol ZS crossover ISN'T for you. The ZS EV on the other hand, due to battery location and a set of Michelin Primacy 3, the handling is somewhat as good as a sedan but probably not as good as the ZS180. One noticeable advantage for the ZS180 is the rear multi-link suspension. The only today's ZS that have balls is the EV. Petrol ones are gutless, not too sure about ZST 1.3L Turbo. So far the ZS EV is the MG's fastest SUV ZS.

Thanks for the comment and interesting to compare the two ZS models as they are so very different. Unfortunately, modern MG badged cars under SAIC MG really are just marketed under the MG marque to provide a bit of heritage... they cannot really be compared to the MGs of old, the sports and GT cars, and the tuned hatchbacks / family cars. I am not sure I'll ever buy and own a modern MG, albeit I am reliably informed they are pretty decent cars. Thanks for watching.
