Miata Transmission Stuck on Engine!

It's a pretty rare occurrence on Miatas but it's possible for the pilot bearing to seize on the input shaft of the transmission making it impossible to remove the transmission from the car. Sometimes just being rough with it will set it free but sometimes it's basically welded together. In this video we show how to separate them in the least destructive method possible.

I need to do my clutch on my NB and am most frightened about things like this happening especially as I’m shade tree mechanic at best and working under Jack stands and not in a beautiful shop like that one! Nice video

1 in occurance my ass bud every single tranny ive ever pulled on a toyota pickup is harder than fuck just like right now i have a 82 toyota pickup 4x4 in the yard and the trans has a 1 inch gap seperated from engine and she is locked​@@immortanautomotive9221

This happened to me just a few weeks before this video came out, except I was a home gamer dealing with it on jack stands and no access to power tools (apartment underground parking). After allot of trial and error I was able to free it with a set of disc brake spreaders / compressors. I can't post links because of youtube's rules, but the ones that worked look sort of like a heavy duty C-clamp with a half inch drive on the end of the twisty bit and extended cast iron spreaders where the clamp part would normally be. They cost $14-16 each from the monopolistic online store with a river and rainforest themed name. You need two of them. I wedged the transmission apart as you did with the screw drivers, worked the spreaders in on either side of the bell housing, then used a breaker bar in the half inch drive to slowly spread them out on either side. Eventually this forced the bearing free and I was able to continue the repair.

Thank you so much this happened to me and the reason it happened is because i forced the gears in when the clutch wasant working. Learned a huge lesson to never force anything. So how did you end up removing that last ring piece? I was thinking of cutting it with the grinder dremel since thats what i used to cut the fork…. Im just so happy it finally came out thanks for the great video!

Been trying to get my tranny off for days. I've got all the bellhousing bolts removed and have about an inch gap around the entire thing. Tranny will spin in place free but will not pull out. Going to see if I can try this trick. Thank you for this video!

I cant even get my bell housing to seperate on my S1 RX-8. Im really hiping its the same issue. Im just working on jack stands and have had the trans stuck for 3 days now. Thankfully, through the starter hole, i have access to all these bolts. Ill try this and see if i have any luck!

Hope that works! I don’t know if the RX8 is similar to an NC miata but I was stumped on my first NC trans removal because there was a 3rd bell housing bolt up top in a very hard place to see.

​@immortanautomotive9221 the NC and RX-8 actually share a chassis! Other than that very different cars. I've got all the bell housing bolts out, there's 5 total

I feel your pain, just triple check that you didn’t forget a starter bolt or something silly, I checked 5 times before cutting stuff haha but this is the best method I’ve found to solve it
