Hi Paul, Hi Kyle. I AM an audiophile of sorts. I graduated from UCSD with a B.A. in ICAM; Basically a music technology degree. With the compressor, you're not adding an "amount" to the signal, like when adding the other effects like chorus or delay. The knob for the compressor is setting the threshold in decibels for when the compressor is activated. If sound coming into the line is above that set threshold, the compressor is activated and compresses the signal. How much it is compressed is dependent upon the compression ratio you choose. If you need a sound guy to help you set up, answer audio tech questions, or just help you get familiarized, I'd love to help you guys. I live just outside LA, Ventura County, and all I would want in return is a thumbscrew T-shirt :P haha. Anyway, have fun with the new gear and the fun new effects. Can't wait to see you use it on the next Awesome Hardware. Keep up the great work guys. I'm gonna build my own computer for music production soon because of your channels.

Computer-Aided Manufacturing in the music industry, not sure what your major is, but you got some degree i guess. pulse-code modulation, PCM sound, a codec to encode sound! You only need the same codec running to reproduce, to do the encoding to analog signals. It's kind of easy, the less compression the better, lossless streams work the best, but is your player able to reproduce it again, or does it go back to a less good ratio, because your player can't play > 19k2 steams, there the tresh hold comes, when it's producing a less good analog signal then the source is. So try to decode the stream to the original signal again, too highest rate as possible that your DAC can reproduce, the less compression the better! You don't need a sound guy at all here, just basic knowledge about codecs enough here! Keep the signal on the original format, the decoding DAC in the last step of the process, in the headset or DAC to the speaker set, some speakers can do that job too, inducing a DAC in the speaker set. You don't need any soundcards for that, onboard codes are the best these days!

Lucas seems to be mistaking audio dynamics compression with digital file or stream compression. Two totally different topics.

Love these types of videos! Please do more of them as you get new stuff. Wouldn’t of minded an extra 5 minutes, or even more, of you playing around with it. Pure hardware videos can get stale after awhile, these always break them up enough to keep things really interesting. The behind the scene type of hardware that allow for all the magic to happen always seem really interesting. It’s like Linus’s fascination with servers. Am I ever going to have full server rack full of high-end commercial hardware that I could store and edit hundreds of hours of 8K video on? No. Do I absolutely love watching his videos on them? YASSSSS

exactly how i would see it - things we wouldnt buy ourself since we dont have any use for it but its fun to see how your (Paul, Kyle, Linus,etc.) setup works and runs i think thats even more fun than having the 10th. review of a 1080 ti or just another AIO Cooler because after benchmarking most of the stuff lands on some shelf - but tech like the Yamahasoundboard/mixer is something we are experiencing regularly on your channel and its fun to know which tech u r using to run your channel (even all the kinks and probs u got with it - probably even a possible new segment: 'tech i use that drives me nuts ;)' ) so keep on doing these kind of 'random' tech videos because technophiles are always curious :)

Hello, can you help me? I have Rode Procaster and Behringer Umc22. But i have environmental noise like PC's fan and my voice is muffled. What should i do? I want most clear voice. Nowadays im looking to "Triton Audio FetHead". But i think my audio interface is bad. Should i buy mixer or audio interface or fethead? I have a few models on my mind. Scarlett 2i2 or Behringer XENYX Q802USB. I will use only microphone so i dont need more channels.

I found your comment on two videos and now I'm in your notification box with my other twin.
@manofwill2468
@manofwill2468 3 года назад
EDIT: after re-reading your comment it sounds like you have decent mics. I would suggest you find a way to add EQ to your mic. boost the high's and the mid's a tiny bit, and get rid of the low end and you should sound more clear. You can also turn the gain down on your mic and bring the mic closer to your mouth to reduce background noise. Getting a pop filter can help with plosives and bear in mind that the closer the mic gets to your mouth the "louder" the low end becomes creating a "muffled" sound. EQ can help with this. I'm going to leave the rest of this stuff down below bc I hate myself: Depends on what you need. A directional mic may be what you need. You can find many different directional mics online and one of the most common mics for talking voices is the Shure SM7B. If that is out of your price range, then I would suggest you look into Microphones with a cardioid polar pattern. Sometimes its not the equipment that runs your mic but rather the mic itself. Condenser Mics commonly require phantom power to operate (I say commonly because some mics have their own built in power supply from batteries) but give great sounding vocals (for talking), and this phantom power can be supplied by an audio interface or a mixer such as the one featured in this video. if you just need a simple way to record yourself then I recommend a Focusrite Scarlett Solo USB Audio interface. The Gen 3 uses usb c to standard usb to connect to your computer and allows for one XLR connection and one 1/4 jack connnection. It's only 109.99 right now and is a great device for beginners looking into recording themselves or just as a method of talking to people over the internet. It also has connections on the back of it to drive (or send audio to) monitors (speakers). and has a 1/4 in headphone jack, which you can buy a 1/4 adapter to use with standard headphones. The nice thing about the mixer featured in this video is not only can you record yourself, but you can also EQ your own mic, add compression, and add silly effects to your voice which is cool. Compression in a nut shell just prevents the microphones volume/or level from going over a specified amount. Set the gain or "sensitivity" of the mic and then add compression and then no matter how loud you speak into the microphone the compressor will not allow the volume to exceed what you set. EQ in regards to this mixer and other mixers like it, just takes pre assigned bands within the audio and allows you to essentially make them louder or more quiet. (aka, manipulate high pitch noises, mid range noises, and bass) The other nice thing about the mixer featured in this video is if, perhaps you want to connect more than one mic to your computer/record more than one person, this mixer allows you to connect up to 4 mics via either XLR or 1/4 adapter, along with 6 other 1/4 jack connections. From what I can see, only 2 of the channels with XLR connections have a compressor, which in reality is all you would ever need. Just for sending good audio across a stream or to record JUST yourself, I would recommend the Focusrite Scarlett Solo, if you want to get a little bit more serious then look into getting a mixer. Research the best mixer for your needs and make sure that your mixer is capable of connecting to your computer via USB or understand the way that audio signals work. Some mixers only send audio across 1/4 connections and if that is the case you will need a separate device (such as a Focusrite Scarlett Solo) to capture and send the signal into your computer. The more I learn about audio equipment (I'm in college becoming an audio engineer) the more complicated it gets. thanks for reading this wall of text. Hope you learned something and maybe this will help you make a semi-educated purchase.

Does the eliminate the need for a dac/amp to drive a high ohm headphones? I was planning on getting a Mayflower arc dac/amp (the replacement of the O2) to drive my high resistance headphones, and then I started looking for a mixing board to use for RU-vid and Twitch so if this can eliminate the need for the Arc then it would basically pay for itself there.

Helpful video! Thank you: I hope you can help with a problem I am having with a mixer in this series: I am not getting audio to go from MG16XU audio mixer to my computer. What am I doing wrong? Here is what I am doing: I am using the MG16XU to feed my dedicated streaming computer's OBS studio. (My computer has an i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20Ghz, 16GB RAM [soon to be 32GB], 64-bit OS NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and 1TB HD.) I downloaded and installed Yamaha's Steinberg USB driver V1.9.10-2 for Win 10/8.1/7(SP1) (32bit/64bit). I have a USB A/B 2.0 cable going from the mixer to my computer. (In accordance with the guidance from the manufacturers manual, I am using a USB 2.0 cable instead of a 3.0.) I have tried connecting the cable to the computer's USB 2.0 input and the USB 3.0 input. In both cases, my computer recognizes the MG-XU, and in the device manager I set it as the default. The MG-XU mixer’s level meter displays appropriate levels, and I hear audio via headset in the mixer’s RCA Monitor Out. Lastly, I have tried setting the LINE / USB to either setting to no avail. Despite my effort, I am not able to transmit audio via USB to my computer for OBS. Again, what am I doing wrong? Thanks, Tom Jr.
