The U89 is a well kept secret. I think it has great tone over the U67 but with "good EQ" can easily dial up to or past a U67 with regards to air and mid-range emphasis, depending on what the aspiration is for the desired sound. The 67 certainly sounds nice, but I'd be tempted to dial down some of its mid-range emphasis on these instruments.
Thanks so much for this! I prefered the U89 on vocals and also on the guitar bit from 05.47 on (VERY nice playing!). I own a U89 from the 80s that I got about 3 years ago in NOS condition. The catch is that it was priced way below a new one. And this was from a dealer. The U89 is still being made today exactly like the older ones. That's not the case with say U87s. The U67 sounds great, nice midrange focus but to me it's not worth 7k. In all the guitar examples here I would not even call the U67 'better' but rather 'different'. And like others have mentioned, it takes EQ exceptionally well. I would also say that the U89 is more true to the real sound of the source. The U89 is a sleeper mic, I'm looking for a second one.actually.
@@roberthasleder1526 Interesting, thanks! Did you sell a newer U87? My U87 - like my U98 - is also from the 80s and sounds amazing. I'm really happy with those two especially for vocals.
@@andigisler Yes, the U87 that I sold was a 2014 model. A good friend of mine owns a 70s U87 and a 80s U87 that I really like. I disliked my 2014 U87 for its somewhat grainy, nasal mid content in the upper mids which I did not notice in the older models my friend uses.
Killer demo as always. Great playing!! The u89 sounds with less mids and more high end. Sounds more modern, maybe suited for pop style sounds. On the soft playing on the OM could be a choice too. The U67 sounded much better in every aspect (except the delicate playing on the OM, where there was a tie. Whats your favorite?
The 67 on the dreadnought guitars and the 89 on the OM and mandolin. That's just my observation with headphones. 🎧 The 67 focuses on the midrange with balanced low frequencies. Depending on the application and if other instruments are recorded at the same time, that would be a deciding factor. Upper level microphones give you options on how you're going to use them. I love those guitars you're playing too.
Thank you, man ! Your evaluation covers exactly my experience. Never been a fan of U89 on guitar, but in this case I like it on the OM more than the U67, same on mandolin. Dreads + 67 is hard to beat.
Thanks for the demo. Good job. No contest. U67 is head and shoulders above the U89. There's a reason Al Schmitt (MHRIP) called it the desert island mic. U67 always sounds like a record. U89 sounded good on the OM18 soft sections, but overall, not even close.
Totally agree!!! Less mids and more highs. more of a modern sound. On the OM delicatte playing is the only area where there was a tie. Everywhere else, the 67....
