@@HopefulInterventions Many so-called Christian pastors are raping kids. You have here only one club kid who murdered someone he knew while under the influence. Keep quiet.
80's 90's and early 2000s NYC club scene was unreal!! The energy was insane. Doing after hours, walking out of a club 1-2pm on a Sunday afternoon wondering what world you were just in is something I don't think will ever replicated again...at least in NYC. The things that went on inside, what you saw, people you saw, and experiences were incredible. It was just one big happy fest and best of all....no camera phones and social media to ruin it.
I'm from São Paulo, Brazil and our nightlife history here is surprisingly very similar or inspired by New York at some points since the 70s, but it's also been in decay for the last 10 years and now i'm wondering what will happen when the pandemic ends, many historic nightclubs have been demolished and turned into residential buildings from last year to now.
PREACH!! And honestly, since when has night clubbing DIED?? I mean, how LONG has going out dancing to music all night been going on? Underground....since FOREVER. Mainstream? Probably, at least, since the roaring 20's if not earlier. That's over 100 years of getting dressed to the 9's, staying out all night to the wee hours of the mourning, dancing, drinking and doing drugs, laughing your ass off and having a fucking amazing time. I'd say that's a pretty decent legacy so far. LOL. Night life/clubbing/rave doesn't seem to be dying any time soon that's for sure! Rave festivals are only getting bigger and bigger. And those go on for DAYS and EVERYONE is dressed up and half naked haha. :)
It's not fair to say that these people are "washed up" since they're all now 40-50 and don't party like that anymore. Not to mention, club kid culture is still popular and very much on the rise. Check out @nickyottav or @thatgirlsussi on Instagram, they're just two of the club kids who keep that scene alive. Or even Moschino's latest runway shows, a lot of fashion is similar to the 90's in that high fashion is influenced by street fashion.
They all laughed when RuPaul said "We're all born naked and the rest is drag" but that little quote is now a massive empire. Michael Musto is a respected, very successful journalist. Both are internationally well-known. Wheres Geraldo?
Geraldo is rich, retired, does not have AIDS, no damage from substance abuse and he probably have a loving family and meaningful relarionships. He won.
@@michaeltronn came to say the same thing. As a father who also supports his children no matter what lifestyle they choose I'm glad to see this pioneer in good parenting leading the way back then.
Yea.. because when you have disposable income, and connections.. you can support your son, with means. This wasn't a father, who worked as a welder.. most parents want their children to follow their dreams, but there's a reality set in point, I'ma a hierarchy that they would claim to fight, but would fully indulge they're no better than the ones they criticize
Bkkersey93 the funny thing is a lot of you str8s have STDS of even HIV but don’t know about it because you think you don’t have to get tested but go off
I love how Rupaul still preaches today what he has been preaching back in the day and was captured on this show. "You're born naked and the rest is drag" "Everybody say Love!" "If you can't love yourself how the hell are you gonna love somebody else" He still says this today. 💕
so you’re telling me, rupaul was close to michael alig this whole time? i mean, it’s not that surprising because he was a club kid but it’s crazy how small new york was at the time. almost like everyone could’ve known each other
Was it just New York? I distinctly remember Keoki throwing desert raves in El Paso texas during the 90s, did the whole gang tour like that or was it just Keoki?
@@TS-qq7vr Success is success regardless where it comes from. Of course we gay people will always be the minority, we make up like 5% of the population but the fact that RuPaul still continued doing what he enjoyed and found some success is admirable.
There is an old joke, a young man said "Dad! I'm leaving for a life of wine, women, and song, and you can't stop me!". Dad thought for a moment and replied "Let me grab my coat. I'm going with you.".
@Dick Guzinya it's quite easy. Dressed as a female? You call her a she. Dressed as a man? You call him a he. It's actually disrespectful to call dradqueens he when their in drag.
@Matthew Gillis RuPaul is a drag queen. It is really rude to call a drag queen 'he'. It isn't a matter of gender identity, but artistic integrity. You wouldn't call a Michelangelo a 'drawing' or a Broadway play a 'skit'. So why would you cheapen their art of female impersonation?
They are all human TRASH. RuPaul being the only exception. Michael Alig is a massive POS!!!!! He tried to drug and rape a very close friend of mine, he was 14 at the time. These people are the lowest form of human out there!
@@elizabethfreeh2100 The one with the red nose and butchered hair cut. There is actually a biographical movie about him called Party Animal that shows the degenerate actions her partook in during this time.
I'm so happy. Clearly he was a knowing entrepreneur and wouldn't have just let his son go out and back him blindly w.o. a business plan. New yorkets dont part w their money easily
The Club Kids were so existentially and artistically groundbreaking, what they did has gone on to inspire so many people and has affected the world in a huge way. A celebration of creativity, beauty, and uniqueness. One of the coolest things to ever happen. A path to enlightenment.
Icon Rupaul!! Look at karma, Ru's more relevant in today's culture than Geraldo could ever wish to be. Much Love to these free spirits that paved the way for self expression freedom.
+guinness4life what does one person killing someone have to do with people of the nightclub scene paving the way for self expression freedom? also it was that michael guy right?
So in your mind there was no self expression for thousands and thousands of years, the world over, in countless cultures but then the 90s and club kids happened and the human spirit could at last slap some Lamé on and be set free?
I think there was self expression for millions of years, but then there was a change that caused societal norms and taboos. George Orwell's 1984 alludes to that during the war as well. Club kids and art in general is a means to break that mold. People express themselves in many different ways. this was one form.
He basically looks satisfied when anyone puts down any of the club kids, and makes anyone who actually has something good to say about their scene to sit down and shut up. he gives me the creeps.
Right? Just thinking about Geraldo in his selfie in his little bath towel that he took to prove "how sexy he still is" a few years back IS WAAAAY creepier than anything any of these 'kids' are wearing~and they know who they are!
Geraldo was such a prick 😂 This is such a precious clip of our history honestly, the context, the crowd interaction and social dynamics is incredible to see.
Every single generation partied and loved their lives! They all had their forms of self expression and pushing the limits of society. It’s amazing how far we have come watching the process over history
this is an accurate representation of two things: 1) unapologetic confidence and honesty on the part of the guests and crowd 2) passive aggressive homophobia on the part of the host
Harris, yet you took the time to watch the show, or even click on the video knowing, Not sure about you, but I never click on a video that I don't find relevant, esp, making a comment on it.
I love how in all these appearances we get like this steady, technical, psycho analytical explanation of the Club Kids and their movements by Michael Musto
Where are they now? Rudolph Piper - Celebrating 20 years of debauchery, currently residing in the club scenes of Brazil Michael Alig - Just got out of prison for killing another club kid in '98 over an outstanding debt. He's apparently "now back on the party scene." Michael Musto - Continues to write and act, big figure in the gay community. Michael Tron - Working as a producer for E!, currently a creative director according to his Linkedin. Julie Jewels - The most hated of club kids by other club kids. She shacked up with a music producer and disappeared from the public eye. Suzanne Bartsch - Working as an artist and philanthropist. Divorced her long time husband in 2010, had recent exhibits of her art / lavish costumes. Toni Senecal - Won an Emmy for her work on for her travel show "Toni on!" RuPaul - We all know how successful she's been since the club kid scene.
JumpScare Motions are you absolutely positive that the OP isn't friends and or acquaintances with said people? If the answer is no, then why all the assumptions?
@@bkkersey93 What a twisted and ignorant perspective. You assume they don't respect themselves based on your own hangups. The problem is you, not them.
Bkkersey93 you don’t get it. right over your head. too avant- garde for you. i suggest you stay in your lane, comment on something you are educated and passionate about...that way you won’t make a fool of yourself as you are right now.
Dj Mejika what?!? Where have you been hiding?!? Rupaul is very popular now. He has Drag Race, Drag Race All Stars, Great Britain Drag Race, Canada Drag Race!! Just to name a few!!
I love the representation and most the audience, but i'm cringing from how Geraldo is demeaning the counter culture he is exposed to. "Everybody say love!" Rupaul!!!!
Omg I can't believe Rupaul thought that he wouldn't be good in three-piece suit! You never know what you are going to wear all the time 20 years later. lol
It’s so crazy that Suzanne and RuPaul still very good friends till these day and throughout the years and she just recently appeared on RuPaul Drag Race All Star 4 and I love that RuPaul and Suzanne still maintain a friendship 😊😊👍🏻
Wow THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting all the extra footage never before seen after the broadcast had aired, thats me in the Riddler Green costume , clowning around half voguing with RuPaul, great HD quality of people who are no longer with us, such a great time in Manhattan and in nightlife and the music scene in general, it will never be THIS good again , glad to have been a part of this time.
Like RuPaul said, people like them have always been around. Every generation (at least in modern history) has had artistic type people who want to buck the norms of society and express themselves in their own unique way....Flappers, Beatnicks, Haippies, etc. The "new" thing with this group was the large amount of drag and open homosexuality. I wonder why there weren't any former hippies in the audience who could have spoken up for those kids. Most older people in the 60s thought that the hippie crowd wouldn't be able to integrate into society and be leaders, but they did, and I'm sure the majoroty of the kids on this show went on to lead productive lives.
It started really in the 20s after the first world War where thousands of women were left widows and thousands of children grew up in unstable, single mother households.
It was a combination of post-war demoralisation, fatherless children and widowed women, post-qar immigration of blacks and prohibition combined lead to the rise of organised crime and jazz music being played in illegal clubs where jazz music played. It's development is largely a product of other 20thbcrntuey events such as the great depression and subsequent rise of keynesian consumerism and the welfare state, state mandatory education, child labor laws, ww2 deaths, new divorce and custody laws, vietnam war leading to the counterculturel revolution of the late sixties.
This is my era lol Rupal came up and I watched it 😂❤ congratulations to the people on stage that made a name for themselves and I’m not talking about a bad name. Much love
@@Dreamskater100 Jerry Springer seems to possibly have a conscience. Geraldo is basically a Trump duplicate (and supporter if you look at his statements). This is basically Fox news from the 1990s.
I haven't seen this in over 25 years. Back then I didn't realize what an condescending piece of shit Geraldo was being to them. And Michael Musto was right: Geraldo *did* change his name. He was born Gerald, plain ole Gerald ! I guess they didn't want to touch it.
I didn't really think Geraldo was being condescending at all. I think he was just trying to make it an interesting show and see what kind of reactions he could get. He did at times show himself as being very open minded, but didn't want to appear as though he totally sided one way or another. He really tried to get everybody's viewpoint on this lifestyle, that is why he went with the Suits and some of the older folk to speak with. I think he was just having fun, and trying to have an interesting show to watch. Sometimes people take an individuals attitude to stern and forget to see that they are actually just trying to create a fun atmosphere.
he was probably tasked to attempt to humiliate them to make them seem less cool to the public as a deterent but completely backfired by being so lame himself
what people don't understand is that talk shows were the front line of progress. nobody would have given that group any air time. when these kind of shows came on, those of us who were fighting for gay rights were very excited.
yeah i think for an open minded crowd it was. the host and audience for alot of talk shows came off like assholes but often the guests who were "outcasts" were well spoken and educated.
Might be nice if you knew the scene and how to read between the lines but for the general audience, this show was terrible. They do just show the extremes, cut off anytime an actual point is made or discussion happens about the philosophies behind it all. Then the weak attempt to push the drug angle. Publicity like this is worse than no publicity other than it might have inspired people to join this culture.
I can get it. Even if they were massively being condescended to, this was the only outlets that would present them. We have the luxury now of platforms like youtube where people can make their own content. But back in the day? I know it was stuff like this, and the artists of the cartoons I watched, etc., that gave me an inkling of 'hey, there's a world out there that's glamorous and amazing, and you can be fierce and yourself, and it's ok.' And I needed that. Even if I was only a little kid wishing I could be as badass as the rocker chicks in media. I needed to know that the world wasn't terrible and bland. Even now, we're watching DESPITE the intended tone, because we want to see these people at the time, talking about their experiences. These are the documents we have.
TBH the ignorance from this segment is really sad. HOWEVER I love how each and every person on the main panel worked their self worth. Peace and love... as well RUPAUL ✊💋
dam michael passed away today OD'ed on Heroin. God Bless all of you guys. Even tho its crazy back than i really miss the old days compared to the 2020 sadness we living in.
Basically like trash, road hard and put away wet. I mean just imagine the average long term drug user, the toll living with AIDS cab take in the skin and body oh and don’t forget how rough prison can make people look.
Mama Ru!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️ I miss my younger days when I could go to the clubs and get no sleep and still work a full-time job and even go to school part-time. Back then I needed like 2 hours sleep and I was fine LOL from what I can remember I had a blast so no regrets
omgthisissostupid David letterman is also held to this level of asshole...he absolutely hates harmony korine. Not sure if I blame him or not. Hard to prove things of the past. But now everything’s on camera ... like the Vegas shooter right ?
Geraldo Rivera was rude, condescending and insulting. That's the kind of behavior that was tolerated back then and why LGBTQ people are still fighting their rights 30 years later.
The Joy of Painting with Raven Williams does anyone really believe that they aren’t as smart as “normal” people? I have never actually heard anyone say that they are dumb, or stupid, or any less capable. Maybe it’s just me.
Thanks for sharing, Janet. From Dallas, we put on the biggest of DJ's and all of NY Club kids (Michael Alig, Asto Earl, Jennytalia, Junky Johnathan, Sasha, Waltpaper)...I had 4404 Productions, a 30,000 sqf warehouse on 4404 Main street downtown/Deep Elum established as my personal residence. Hired off duty police officers, engage non profit gay and lesbian alliances as beneficiaries, 21 and up with an open bar (technically liquor given, not sold) and it worked great. Partnering with those socially sensitive entities gave code enforcers no green light to raid.
This was basically the Studio 54 crowd! (among others) LOL, went there when I was 17 with cousins, had a blast but unfortunately never went back. Even though this was in '90, I went to 54 in '77, AND as a side note, at 15:05 was the older woman who used to frequent "54" as can be seen in the movie "Studio 54" with Mike Myers, but she was portrayed by an actress of course. These were great times and mems!
I've actually partied with the Club Kids, I worked the door at The Starck Club in Dallas back in 89-93 I was the girl checking IDs and holding the VIP list they used to throw private parties there. This totally takes me back to my drugged out partying days. The good old days. That was ages ago.
Who is forcing them to be anything other than who they want to be? Just because people don’t like how they’re dressed doesn’t mean they’re being oppressed.
17:18 "After the club scene dies out... you'll fizzle out into never never land and we'll forget about you" Just to follow up and see if this prophecy came true: Mykul/Michael Tronn would later survive testicular cancer, move to Miami where he continued a career as an artist, designer, and promoter. He is currently working on a restaurant, Timbr, which was scheduled to open Feb 2023 (delayed?). So you could argue that he parlayed his notoriety as a club kid into a successful career, or you could argue that he "got a real job" outside of partying, I guess it depends how you look at it. Definitely a success, although not likely to be on any talk shows anymore.
Clearly no one has forgotten about RuPaul. RuPaul is laughing all the way to the fucking bank!!!! Lol! Yessssss! Fuck boring mainstream. We make your boring world so much more interesting!
the club kids are so comfortable with themselves they are actually having fun edit: wtf guys i'm only commenting on how they are on this show not condoning their bs and violence
Ooooh those 2 straight-laced suit wearing dudes putting down RuPaul and mama Ru is now 10times more successful and ruch than they could ever dream of back then. I love this so much!!😅
22 shows in a wig and finds club kids wierd lmao ...also can we talk about RU Paul visibly losing her life force everytime someone says something stupid XD "where do you get your clothes"
3:49 I miss how everyone dressed in the 90's... 80's and 90's fashion was like none other, I hope we have another decade or 2 of creativty like we did then!
Even back then, you could totally tell Rupaul would have the world eating out of her hand one day. She's smart, funny, charismatic, personable. She really had that star quality, and she knew how to focus and harness that. She started an EMPIRE! And we love her!
this is the reason i love ru. i didnt know who ru was until i was about 12, 13 yo after watching party monster and youtubing the clubkid videos. ru was of the most inspirational people.
