Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins' controversial Dunk Contest finish needs a deep rewind

In the mid-1980s, Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins had simultaneous rivalries. Both were friendly, and both shifted over time.
The first rivalry came from actual basketball games. The Atlanta Hawks had a head start building around Wilkins, the older of the two players, and enjoyed some degree of playoff success during this era. Jordan arrived to the Chicago Bulls in 1984 and quickly distinguished himself as one of the league’s premier stars - even greater than Wilkins - but the Bulls took some time to generate a winner around their centerpiece.
There were some Atlanta-Chicago matchups in which Jordan won a scintillating back-and-forth matchup with Wilkins but the Hawks ultimately won the game, underscoring disparity. By 1988, that dynamic was starting to shift.
The other rivalry was in dunking. Jordan and Wilkins were not just great players, but great entertainers, and they first demonstrated that side-by-side at the 1985 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, which Wilkins won narrowly over Jordan. After each had to skip one of the next two dunk contests, the finals of the 1988 event became the great showdown.
In this episode of REWINDER, we discuss what came of that showdown, which ended somewhat controversially. That’ll happen when players repeat dunks, and when the contest takes place in Chicago.

Back in the 80s, the judging for the dunk contest was based on execution rather than originality (kinda like gymnastics). In 1984, Orlando Woolridge merely got a 48 for the very first between-the-legs dunk in NBA All-Star history. Vince Carter changed that mindset, hence many competitors in recent years who can't come up w/ new aerial feats resort to using props for cheap pops.

That was consistently awful judging They underscored Jordan in the first few rounds, gave 'nique 49 where MJ only got 47 (at one point even when MJ did an improved version of Dom's reverse in the same contest. Then overcompensated to hand Jordan the win so as not to look as stupid in Chigaco only to retrospectively look more stupid and biased. Idiocy all round
@Iambriangregory
@Iambriangregory 4 года назад
Your comments make some sense except for a couple of things you opine that they underscore Jordan, you do recognize that it's all subjective anyway. So it in your mind they may have been underscored but maybe not in the others but Wilkins was robbed I saw that dunk contest and I saw Wilkins do a dunk that Jordan never did and that didn't look like it was humanly or feasibly possible in the world of physics it look like he went straight up like a helicopter then went forward like a helicopter to the basket I don't care anything about what you say or anybody else says about Jordan being underscored because that one dunk was enough to win the whole contest unless Wilkins had missed his dunks so there's my opinion and it's worth as much as anybody else in the planet in this subject including yours

@@Iambriangregory If it's all purely subjective, then there's no controversy. And since there *is* some controversy, that stands to reason that there is, at least a little, objectivity. And, the most likely source of that objectivity is from comparing the way the judges scored various dunks against similar dunks that they scored. The guy you're replying to is doing just that. You can disagree with his conclusions, but you don't get to use the cop out of "it's all subjective".

That was BS, Shaq didnt deserve that at that moment in time. McAdoo was a 3x Scoring Champ and MVP. Wilkins was top 10-15 in scoring all time. Was 2nd in MVP voting to a prime Bird. Wilkins wouldve led the league in scoring somin like 5x without Mj and led the league in scoring 1x. Shaq was a scoring champipn and 2nd in MVP voting and a finalist. Eveyone knew Shaq was gonna eclipse them but 4 yers of his career wasnt enough to be called top 50. Also worth noting that by 96 Penny was probably the best player of that team

As much as I love that iconic dunk (and being an MJ fan) seeing that dunk for the 4th time might not merit a score of 50. Dominic Wilkins should have been the winner imho.

Like I always say: Jordan was nothing short of amazing and a joy to behold, but he was SOOOOOO favored left and right. Things were given to him all the time. The HYPE made people believe he was something he was not. All his fails are brushed under the carpet and all his wins are blown 100 ft high. Love watch him play, but not even close to the GOAT. If he is the GOAT, then so is KOBE. Dude couldn't beat D.Wilkins without help is not the GOAT in my book.

We've probably seen better (in-game!) dunks than all of these in the last month alone, it's crazy how all the most talented dunkers of the 80s had "their" 2 or 3 dunks and basically stuck with em

Here’s my take: Jordan and Nique went toe for toe with each other in this dunk contest. They should have both won this, and these two put on some of the best dunks in history. They would have one if they were in different years. Sadly, they were in the same year, and only one man could win it. In the end, it could have went either way, but they gave it to my hometown guy, Michael. And if nique won, everyone would be saying it was controversial, and this video would be on how nique won is controversially. Either way, this was a the best dunk contest ever, and both MJ and Dominique were winners.

I remember watching this as a kid in '88 with my two brothers and cousin, all of whom were Jordan fans. When I said Dominique got robbed, they called me a hater. For YEARS. Now, some 36 years later, they agree that it was rigged to let Jordan win in the end. (The next day, he rightfully won All-Star Game MVP with 40 points; 'nique had 29.) If Dominique gets just a 47 on his final dunk -- he'd scored higher than that on every dunk that day, and in all previous dunk contests -- then Jordan is eliminated even before taking his final dunk. So the judges each gave 'nique a 9, for a total of 45, paving the way for Jordan to win it all, in grand style, at home. It was rigged. But it was still great fun!
