Michael Jordan didn't like Jeff Van Gundy calling him a con man, and he didn't like the New York Knicks thinking they could beat the Chicago Bulls.
So Jordan responded to the challenge the way he knows best, scoring 51 points--the most by an NBA player this season--in leading the Bulls to an 88-87 victory over the Knicks on Tuesday night at Chicago.
The Knicks used a 17-2 run to cut a 17-point deficit to 80-78 with 6:22 left. Allan Houston, who had missed 12 of his first 13 shots, made two three-pointers and a jumper to spark the surge.
But Jordan scored Chicago's final eight points for an 88-81 lead, and a three-pointer by Houston and another at the buzzer by Chris Childs were not enough to bring the Knicks back.
"I was prepared to do whatever it took to win," said Jordan, who reached the 50-point mark for the 36th time in his career. "There were times where things were going so well everything seemed to be in slow motion. I didn't rush. I just relaxed and played."

The difference to me, between Jordan and Kobe was that Jordan made things look smooth, natural and effortless, like water flowing over rocks. With Kobe, it looked hard, like he was really trying and grinding away.

That is one of the most underrated aspects of his game. He just believed that no one could stop him, not one on one, not two on one, no way, no how he would be stop. I really believe that had Jordan not been born with that athletic talent he would've self destruct because of his obsession with winning. Either a gambling addiction or something Maybe I am wrong and he would've succeeded in the business world because of his work ethic and willingness to put in the extra hours to succeed But you're right, his confidence was the key that allowed him to believe that when everything was said and done he would be able to win at all costs

I disagree. They weren't overly dependent on Jordan. This same Bulls team won 55 games without him (replaced by a 5ppg CBA player Pete Myers). Phil Jackson won 5 championships without Jordan (with the Lakers). I'd say he had plenty help. Team capable of nearly 60 wins and the best coach of his time. I'm just lucky I grew up watching the greatest basketball player ever, in the best NBA era. The 80's-90's were the golden age of the NBA. With players like Bird, Magic, Isaiah, Ewing, Robinson, Barkley, Hakeem, Drexler, Stockton, K./M. Malone, Joe-D, Scottie, Domonique, Shaq, etc. the All-Star games were basically just the future Hall of Fame. The craziest thing, Jordan not only played against and beat these players....HE DOMINATED THESE PLAYERS. No more evidence needed to see who the G.O.A.T. really is. LeBron is great, so was Kobe...but neither were THE GREATEST. LeBron wore Jordan's #23, not vice versa. Kobe modeled his game after Jordan...not vice versa. The Bulls would've won 8 STRAIGHT NBA TITLES, had MJ not retired for 1.5 years. That's fucking nuts in that era!!! He went through Hall of Famers to get those rings. LeBron has lost more than he's won. Kobe was really good...but he had Shaq. Jordan never had a great C. It's extremely hard to win titles without a dominant big man, but Jordan did it...6 TIMES!!!! P.S. Thanks so much for these videos. Brings back so many memories of my youth. *"Like Mike...if I could be like Mike."*

Ppl dont really understand games like this… the guy scored 51 yes, BUT on a 30 sec clock possession, means there were many LESS possessions per game, or if u like, options to score as much as today ( the quickest 24 clock plus the way players shoot 3s today make the final scores way different ), so the man scored 51 points BUT of a total of 88 points! thats arround 60% of ur team points LMAO and that was usually the case when he scored 50 or 60+. That would equal easily 70+ in a regular game of today with so many more possessions and the 3 pointer as a main weapon for guards. And btw if he had played pg as much as lebron, he would have so many triple doubles since hes hability to pass and rebound is SO underrated cuz of his greatness at scoring… not to mention his outstanding defense… and that crazy no look steal?? LOL jordan was just different.

It was only a 6ft3 Chris Childs with a career average of 7PPG he was posting up against. A guy who would be a D-League player today. This man was bouncing from team to team for 4 years before he entered the NBA. This man came into the NBA after playing for teams like Rapid City Thrillers, Columbus Horizon, La Crosse Catbirds, Rockford Lightning, Bakersfield Jammers, Rockford Lightning, Quad City Thunder, and the Miami Tropics. And when he got to the NBA, he was also bouncing around from team to team. From 1994 to 2003, he played for the Nets, Knicks, and Raptors. Keep in mind that this was a man-to-man defense. Childs couldn't do his job right so they put a 6ft6 Power Forward as in Larry Johnson to defend Jordan? This is Jordan's competition? And what defense was played in this game? Where's the physicality that the Knicks were said to have played every night? Overrated. Wanna see what Kobe was up against? facebook.com/407101112762461/videos/499187853553786/?t=62

rljuice - what's hilarious is that you have it ass backwards. That's the only way to win consistently. As players get older, they realize using speed only in a half court set can never consistently be successful. MJ's accuracy made defenders have to respect his pump fake which gets his defenders off balance or usually in the air. And to say that this doesn't work today is just so dumb as the smarter players today still do the same thing. Why? Because this is FUNDAMENTAL basketball and is simply unstoppable but you kids today are too stupid to know that. Stop listening to the idiots on ESPN and go do some basketball research or better yet, go play some basketball. Today's NBA is an inferior game that has much less fundamentals being used by players because the soft rules allow them to use more athleticism - the reality is half of the sub 6'4" guys of today would get killed in yesterday's NBA. And the bigs of today would get destroyed on the inside as well.
