I started playing basketball at age 2 with one of those plastic Little Tikes hoops. At age 3 and 4 and maybe 5 my mom would record me running and dunking on it while it was on it’s lowest level (in the late 90’s). My grandma also remembers me bouncing the ball in her drive way for hours at a time when I was in kindergarten. If you saw me to day, you’d think my ball handling skills came naturally. NOPE. There’s no other aspect of basketball that I worked harder at. Things that sorta did come natural were on ball defense (never had to practice that. It was easy since the first time I guarded somebody, and got better with in-game experience), passing’s always been easy for me, rebounding, and dunks. Everything else I’m only good at due to a lot of work. I’ve worked hard in pretty much all aspects of basketball, but there’s a few that I got good at without any struggle. Point is, you’d think at least 90% of my abilities came naturally if you saw me play today when really only about 35% of my game naturally/easily. But the only reason I worked so hard at it is because there isn’t much that I love more than basketball. If basketball was say my 5th favorite sport, dunking would be the only way I could score because I’ve always had a natural feel for dunking. Shooting and layups came from a lot of practice (though post moves and free throws feel kinda natural too).... Love and passion makes hard work easy.
MJ is proof that hard work can lead to greatness. The fact that MJ didn't make his high school basketball team is motivating to never give up and to work hard. Nothing is given. You must earn it.
As a basketball player, Mike is indisputably the greatest, but what draws me to him more is his work ethic and his relentless pursuit to achieving his heart's vision. I've read about Phil Jackson and his interactions with Mike, and from what I've read, Michael truly had the attitude of a champ. He had enough humility to accept his weaknesses and enough courage to turn them into strengths. This is the hallmark of a person who succeeds and one who doesn't.
Yes man, I've read too. Phil Jackson also compares M.J and Kobe and he says Kobe is as passionate, ambitious and determined as Michael in basketball. But outside of it, Kobe is more relaxed, he doesn't care as much if he loses other friendly competitions in life, like playing backgammon or sth., he can let it go. Michael on the other hand, is the same everywhere and wants to win everything, and he cannot easily let things go. I agree what you say about Michael Jordan, and this commercial also shows well why he is who he is. One of the best commercials ever and gives me goose bumps every time I watch. "Maybe I let you believe that basketball is a god given gift, not something I work for, every single day of my life..."
Exactly. I too have heard Mike being highly competitive in the smallest of things, such as cards and golf, even among his friends. Competition is good so long as it doesn't cause harm to others and doesn't bring others down. If it's directed towards something positive, than by all means it's good. I don't think Mike's is harmful though, based on my observation. He's a global mogul who's influenced plenty. I wish him much success.
Hubub, don't rip kobe off on this one. Kobe has undoubtedly some of the greatest work ethic ever seen in a basketball player. It doesn't matter if he wins or loses. After the game, he's taking 100 free throws- by himself. And when he got injured, he would still wake up at the break of dawn and work as hard as possible. There's a story that he was practicing and training for the Olympics, and this trainer told him that he could call him if ever needed help. At 4 am, kobe called him and asked if he could come over and help him with some drills. So the trainer said ok, I'll be there. When he arrived after 20 minutes, kobe was drenched in a pool of sweat. After the trainer helped him after that, he left and came back at 10. Guess what? Kobe was right there, shooting around.
DAMN I just watched Episode 7 of The Last Dance, and in the end of it, he's almost tearing up recalling how competitive he was on himself and his teammates when he played. Brings me back here somehow
I’m from North Carolina. My wife is from the Philippines. When I am over there and Filipinos hear that I am from NC, they ask me if I know Michael Jordan. I tell them the truth. “No, I don’t.” They still give me free taxi rides and food just because I grew up in the same state as Jordan. That’s respect.
The dude who was in charge of making this ad is now the Chief Creative Officer at Target. The writers now own their own advertising companies. Not surprised.
“Maybe it’s my fault. Maybe I led you to believe it was easy, When it wasn’t. Maybe I made you think my highlights started at the free throw line, And not in the gym. Maybe I made you think that every shot I took was a game winner. That my game was built on flash, and not fire. Maybe it’s my fault that you didn’t see that failure gave me strength, That my pain was my motivation. Maybe I led you to believe that basketball was a God given gift, And not something I worked for, Every single day of my life. Maybe I destroyed the game. Or maybe, You just making excuses.”
Came to watch this commercial in 2024 after Lebron James lost 4-1 to the nuggets and said in a press conference “It’s just basketball.” I miss MJ and Kobe’s mentality.
Maybe you're too young to remember Michael getting his ass whooped in the playoffs or Kobe Bryant struggling to make the playoffs. Maybe you're an idiot. Maybe you're just making excuses because MJs dick in your mouth 30 years?
He really did destroy the game in some ways. He was so amazing and won at such a level that all people saw were the rings and highlights, not how he played game in and game out and the work it took to get there. It led to a generation of ball-dominant volume shooters, as if that’s what he was in his prime. He was a killer on both sides of the court, a team player who did whatever it took to win and played disciplined basketball. But all people saw were clips of the amazing dunks and layups, the smooth fadeaway, him pumping his fist after another clutch game winner. He was so much more than just a shiny toy that you could imitate by dribbling around and shooting a lot.
But he was a ball hog. He has the most shots taken per game of all time. So naturally he also has the highest PPG of all time shooting at average efficiency. Kareem took 40% more shots than Jordan but has only 20% less PPG than Jordan. Jordan is far from being the GOAT.
@@HarmanHundal01 Jordan shot 50% his whole career. If you have one volume shooter more efficient than the whole team, why not let him take shots? Also, you're comparing career efficiency between a center and a guard, and naturally a center will have higher fg
@@dakie7440 Think of any good but not great guard. Lookup his efficiency. He is likely ahead of Jordan in FG%. When Jordan left in 1994, all his teammates FG% went up which suggests that he used to take up their easier shots.
I have that tattooed on my forearm. Just like "every single day" .... and "my pain was my Motivation" And the Jumpman logo and the old Wings logo and the number 23 and so on and so on
what fascinates me about Michael Jordan besides he's a legend in basket ball of fame is his consistent and determination to pursue his dreams ..awesome man love you Michael Jorden
Gosh, Michael Jordan is so inspiring. Even though I don't play basketball and I am a girl I still think he is very inspiring. His speeches always capture exactly how I feel about things!
Best commercial ever. You can never be like Mike, you can only be yourself. His story that lead to his success is no fairy tail that no one else in this world could endure. That makes him a legend.
many relished the chance to be like mike. not many wanted to put the work in. however, there was one player who did. a diamond in the rough. Kobe Bryant. Kobe Bryant was like mike. Even MJ himself got mad that he was taking all of his moves. Kobe transcended the game of basketball and achieved the dream we all once had. to be like mike. Rest in peace mamba. Your legacy will live in forever. 🙏
That’s why I’m here to see this, Kobe. Someone on Bleacher Report mentioned that MJ didn’t work hard, but then somebody said that he did & to Come watch this video
Last year I was under 18 National Champion. This year I lost in the seniors’ category. Yet, I feel the same, because I know what I did, I know all the effort, the sweat and tears. It is not winning that makes you better, it is the path, and only by losing you can learn this. People don’t treat me the same as last year, but just let it be and ignore them.
I'm a football player(soccer) and I am not a big fan of basketball but MJ is my inspiration. Jordan is bigger than his sport. His mental game is beyond the possible. With a state of mind like MJ you can accomplish anything.
@@patrickharrison871 Jordan worked extremely hard, and had the best work ethic of any basketball player during his active years... However, as a man well under 6 feet tall, I'd never be given any opportunity to play this sport past high school, and in fact I was not allowed on the high school team due to my height. Being born 7 feet tall isn't work ethic, it's rare genetics, and a HUGE reason why some of these players get to the NBA. It is not "all" work ethic, but both definitely have a major role in this sport.
Michael Jordan is my NBA Legend, idol and icon!!! He's empowering quotes and words are so inspirational and how he worked so hard in the NBA and gives back to many people and communities and it's so wonderful how his words helped him in his career and life!!
The difference? No one, no matter who you ask, would ever imagine MJ dubbing himself "The Chosen One" just out of high school. He never assumed anything was entitled to him... And it's that drive and work ethic that created the man who holds the ultimate title - of the Greatest.
When he says... "every single day of my life" @ 0:41 ... his voice has this realness... this tone of deep discipline and commanding drive that demands respect... just his tone of voice in that one line sends shivers up my spine and down my arms..... It transfers his passion into my life... but i still need to act on it every single day of my life...
I don't know why, but when I saw Dear Basketball by Kobe, it really reminded me of this Jordan commercial. So much like it, the way it points out hard work, desire, the love for the game, the way is narrated by each player. I have a really good feeling that Kobe was inspired by this commercial. RIP KOBE! You truly are a die hard Jordan fan and wanted to mimic everything about him, you are the closest thing to Jordan!
Damn True! He really was the closest thing to Jordan. Jordan once said about Kobe: "He's cursed as much as I am!" To me, this shows how much he respected Kobe's drive to win.
TheBadAIDS Okay...you don't like or know GOD. Free speech. That is also a gift from GOD, else you could have been born in communist China somewhere. have a nice day, kid. p.s. You are blocked. I decided to cut negative fools out of my diet.
"maybe i led you to believe basketball was a god given gift..and not something i worked for every single day of my life" you can hear the pain in his voice when he says this. he really did sacrifice himself for this game
Listening to this back then resonated a lot with me. Only when you give effort to something this video makes sense. Nobody knows the time we put in, they only see results.
There's no excuse for to reach above what you can do. I've played 16 years of my life to the sport. I played everyday in those years. I do it to become the best player I can be. Injury or not I still play and one day to play in the NBA. I set that goal a long time ago and I won't give up on that goal and my dream to play the sport at the highest level.
I can´t stop watching it. I feel like if I watch this everyday, I will never complain again in my life. The authority and respect this man commands is amazing.
It means that his game wasn't built to be a show's man but it was built for him to be winner. The flashiness was a by product of how damn good he was. The fire, the motivation to win and the excellence in every aspect of the game is what made Michael Jordan the best ever. His work ethic is how he got there.
When you get really really good at the technical the gift n skill looks majestic. You’re ability is honed, you’re in your zone and it just happens. I say this as an artist who always had to start over n over. Keep practicing n then one day there’s no more do overs n you can feel nothing but confidence in what you’re doing
I just failed a very important test for my career but I get to retake it... And I'm beyond fucking pissed and hurt about it...but I needed this message right now. Pain as my motivation
I have that tattooed on my forearm. Just like "my pain was my Motivation" And the Jumpman logo and the old Wings logo and the number 23 and so on and so on
In college I wrote all the words to this commercial onto a piece of paper and placed it on the fridge. It confused my roommate and she began to think I was mad at her lmao.
Greatest of all Time, young kids if you didn't see him play you missed out.. I remember when he scored 63 against Boston in the playoffs and I remember the last shot against the jazz in the finals as a bulls fan I had plenty of great moments certainly not 3-5 in the finals Lmmfao
