and no one is losing their minds because they didnt get hurt in the worthless baseball classic. If Edwin got hurt in Mets camp fans would not be up in arms
@@johnsturgeon3458 Tell the Puerto Rican team and the country it's meaningless. Matter fact, tell any team that and you'll get the same response. It's easily the most important thing ever to them. It's only that it's a new tournament that people wanna discredit it. 50 years from now the WBC will have so much weight in sports history it might overtake the WS in popularity worldwide. Cranky old Americans aside.
16:23 I currently live in South Korea. I don't think they understand that the WBC is the 2nd watch sporting turniment here. Only beat by the world cup. Hell the Korea series is watched less than the WBC
as a Korean American, this doesn't surprise me one bit. people go nuts about South Korea competing in anything, let alone facing off against Japan lol the only thing that sucked was how badly South Korea played this year. Holy shit, they looked absolutely lifeless against Australia and they were just blown to bits by Japan
That ending was brutal. As a Puerto Rican and a Met fan I enjoyed that game so much. The atmosphere was incredible as both teams had equal number of fans in the stands being loud and supportive for their respective teams. Then the injury happened and I knew it was going to be bad because nothing ever goes right for us met fans. So there is no perfect time to play this tournament and these injuries can happen at anytime whether people are at spring training, at home, at the store, etc. People need to take a deep breath and chill
I’m with Don on this one. When are they supposed to play in the WBC? And to the players, it’s important for them to represent their country just as much as it is for them to do their jobs
Yeah, plus he's right about there being too much competition in November. They would get sorry ratings in the US competing with college football & the NFL.
@@MrZadir-nu7bd i used to be with Michael's side on this. I wanted to see the WBC in November back in like 2009. But the more I think about it now, there really is no great time to host the WBC. March is really the best of a bunch of terrible options. It's only every 3-4 years...why can't some teams just be willing to roll the dice on that
A baseball season is draining, then there would be a long playoff break, then what? Another week or two after the world series to the have the WBC? What about players spending time with their families? Also, you have to keep the weather in mind, we have parks with roofs, and carribean teams will be fine, but it is world wide. Finally, would people care as much, with football season in full swing already, and soccer potentially having their world cup or other tournaments?
Tell the people of Japan that they should suspend the WBC. 36 million watched a practice game before the WBC. If Manfred is smart. He would try to expand it and make it even more important.
Someone please tell Michael Kay the game between Japan and South Korea had higher ratings than the World Series. Translation: The world baseball classic is more than just American players.
@@markenglish6035 not 63 million, according to the Sports Business Journal. The games had between 29-38 million estimated viewers, with the game that had less than 30 million being the final. The last world series had an average of 12 million. Roughly 150% more on average
to be fair, Michael was a lot more sympathetic toward the WBC than i thought he was going to be. that being said, yeap still ended up kissing ass for the owners
Ohtani has a 500 million dollar contract on the line, and he will risk it. That’s how important representing their country is to players outside of US.
Micheal kay says that players should be more concerned with the teams paying them the most money. But then 5 minutes later mentions the carribean winter leagues and nobody bats an eye, yet when a great player goes down with a freak injury in a tournament that occurs only every 3-4 years he and a lot of others are up in arms and outraged about it. Doesnt make any sense.
WBC is great for baseball. Just think about all the young kids who will grow up loving baseball because they are seeing their heroes play. This increases the love for the sport and its longevity. The WBC is only growing in its popularity.
Feels like the argument shifted the goal post. Kay's main argument was the timing of the event, but it got shifted to the importance of it. I'm glad Kay brought it back. I tend to agree that it shouldn't be in March. Met fans have always had bad luck with the WBC so I get their pain as well. As far as when the WBC should happen, I wish I had an answer. After the World Series seems to make the most sense, but I understand the TV deals situation. But we can't have stuff like this happening to teams.
This is the reason baseball hasn’t reached the hights it can, we also lost the Olympics! Its sad, they don’t see the bigger picture. Theres so much views worldwide on this tournament, the potential is insane.
The only time players get to represent their country playing the sport the love is in wbc. Nobody talks about baseball more than when there is wbc MLB need to realize the wbc is boost for the MLB regular season brings new fans specially young ones. Even the American players have been saying it how they loving this classic and how they love representing their country. Injury happens anytime. Wbc is the best BASEBALL TOURNAMENT THERE IS. They guy here hating on the wbc never played baseball at high level. These players are top competitive they and there's nothing better for person like that to get a chance to compete and represent their country
Hey, I don’t know what to think about you as a person if you have more loyalty to your employer than your family. Those players are representing their families.
When it comes to national pride, it's more than money to some guys. It's not right or wrong, it's just what it is. You can't force people to feel a certain way. To some it is a glorified exhibition game. To them it's far from an exhibition game. If Mike Trout likes it and is enjoying it, what is the problem? The guy against it can't understand the feeling about this.
Can't Blame The WBC it's not there fault and both the World Series and WBC are both important to win. The timing of this Beyond Epic Event should take place in November I agree with that
I’m a big fan of the WBC but I also understand Michael Kay’s point of view. That being said there are some players that are willing to give up their salary if they were to get injured in the WBC. Darvish said that he was prepared not to get an extension because he was planning to play for the WBC, but the Padres signed one anyway. Ohtani went to the US when he was under 25 and only got paid a few hundred thousand dollars when he could have waited and got paid millions. He also chose the Angels so he could pursue his dream to become a two-way player instead of going to a team like the Yankees. It’s not all about money to every player.
People who argue against the WBC don’t love the game of baseball and don’t want to see the game grow internationally. The people who argue that the World Series should more important than the WBC don’t understand that life and sports exists outside of the US. It’s a narrow view that limits the growth of baseball.
This reminds me of when Conforto blew out his shoulder swinging. He clearly had the injury beforehand and was either hiding it or didn't think that it was a big deal. I agree with Peter, Diaz was always a ticking time bomb because of the way that he pitched.
@@bry892 Remember when the Mets celebrated during spring training a year ago as if they won the World Series. That was the same type of celebration Diaz hurt himself in.
@@snerdterguson The Mets passed the salary threshold a long time ago. Diaz wasn't even hurt pitching, he got hurt celebrating. Having it a month after the season is over would be stupid because (1) the players are already wore out after a long season (2) They would have to sit down for a month and then have to get themself back into gear to play again which would cause more injuries and (3) Too many players would decline because that is their time to spend with family.
@@snerdterguson no what i proved is players get hurt during Spring Training games just like they do in WBC and nothing in your mind numbling rambling proves differently. NO one is playing in a tournament in November after playing a 200 game schedule, NO ONE. Players are my likely to get injured especially pitchers playing in a tournament after playing 200 games. Not going to happen.
@@flutterworksdigitalmarketi2557 I agree with you. And it's every 3-4 years, if the naysayers can't be flexible then that's being a little selfish. This tournament gives players like Trout an opportunity to play in something meaningful and all those millions of people around the world an atmosphere of a world series. The crowds in Japan and Chinese Taipe are amazing, the crowd at the PR Dominican game was amazing. People brought their instruments, their ethnic wear and garb etc. It brings so many people together. There are so many wars and negative stuff going on, humanity needs something that is beautiful and causes human beings to see each other on the basic human level. This tournament is proving that all human beings are essentially the same, with the same hopes and aspirations, loves and repulsions. We are all the same on the very fundamental level, but we express that sameness so differently. The Japanese with their large flags, Chinese Taipe with the dancing girls leading the chants that the whole crowd does in a call and response manner with the overhead announcer-then they get silent when their team is on defense. It is something beautiful. Baseball is a game of human drama, of pain and suffering (i.e. Bill Buckner) and triumphs (Reggie Jackson) and difficult relationships (Reggie and Martin). It is an expression of the human drama, and in that people get hurt. There is always some pain in the midst of glory, this pain, runs deep, a young man sees his season and hopes for the future ends, he is learning a very difficult but sublime lesson about life, competition and what it means to be alive, to discover what is truly meaningful in life. No one likes pain and defeat at the hands of fate or karma, but it always happens, because it's life. The Buddha said, if you're going to live, you're going to suffer and baseball in so many ways express that beautifully, what seems horrific is somehow sublime. That's baseball. These guys are playing for something that cannot be quantified, it is much more than money to them. It is taking on a hero's journey, to sacrifice for something bigger than yourself, your country, your ideal, your way of life. This tournament, for the ones who play, touches something deep within the human heart, and that's why they do it. They are not thinking about money or fame or anything of the sort. It is about the sacrifice and the journey of the hero. Sometimes the hero fails, the hero gets hurt, the hero falls short. Trout is feeling it because it touches something within that he could not find in the MLB. It is more than pride, it is going to a battle, of sport, with your brothers. In ancient societies, young men would be taught about being a hero for something bigger than themselves, which is the society, the culture, the people. And since it is an intimate aspect of the human heart, these valiant young men, win or lose, are attempting to fulfill that duty to the other, the country, the people.
i agree with Michael. This is the reason there should not be shame for players not wanting to play for the national basketball team. You sign a contract for millions you owe something to them, to be available.
MLB World Series happens every year, where the WBC happens every 4. This is baseballs Olympics. Get over the "it's too risky" saying. Spring training happens every year, thats too risky too. Maybe we should get rid of spring training too? 🤦♂️
The WBC is great and part of the reason is when it happens. It gets attention in March. The players are motivated to play in March. The WBC works because great players play in it and they won’t want to in November. If you like baseball and go to a WBC game you understand why it’s good for the game. Whenever anything involves a Mew York team it’s always made in to a bigger deal.
I was thinking of having the WBC as opposed to the all star game. Got a lot of blowback. Having it in December gives the players time to vacation after the season and before the next season.
The only other option to me is to play it at the end of the season while players are used to hyper competitive baseball. However, there will be many who are injured due to the course of a grueling season
You saying it’s not the Olympics is weak there is no baseball in the Olympics this is the only venue for them to represent their countries you have no issue with major league teams making money off these guys here but don’t want them to represent where they come from is dumbfounding
Michael Kay just said it’s not the Olympics when it basically is for baseball. WBC was created because MLB players are in mid-season when Olympics happen. NBA players participate because it doesn’t conflict with their schedule
As cool as the tournament I think will be, it is not at the right time. November probably is better. Tricky to find a time that would attract players but still not endanger them for the upcoming season though. No doubt.
This year’s WBC has been the best ever. WBC is great for baseball it’s exciting. What happened to Edwin could just have easily happened in Spring training I could be wrong but I truly believe he was already injured just kept it on the low.
I agree that the Diaz injury was a ticking time bomb. If there were no WBC, he could have suffered the same injury jogging in from the bullpen while Timmy Trumpet was blasting. Sadly it probably would have happened one way or another.
Football celebrations too remember Martin Gramatica blowing out his knee celebrating after hitting a field goal you can’t tell these guys to not want to represent where you come from my family is from Puerto Rico if I was a major leaguer I’d play in the WBC no doubt
Mlb could never create this atmosphere with there games wbc is so much better than mlb games ppl who never watch mlb games have been tuning into this tournament it does way more to grow the game than mlb ever could
Does Michael understand the injury Diaz suffered? It was inevitable. It was going to happened at some point during spring training. Unfortunately it occurred in the wbc, but the wbc was not the reason for the injury. The Altuve injury is another story
As a Mets fan, yes. It's unfortunate that Diaz got hurt. It's unfortunate that our starting infield is away. But right now they're getting what the Mets need- games in high leverage situations so they recognize how to perform in October. It's also giving us a chance to get these kids into some games. Baty is making great progress. Mauricio is showing great promise. Alvarez is looking sharp. These kids are getting more time to get ready for that call up.
If the WBC is more important than the World Series to these players, then get rid of them. Guaranteed contracts need to be out of baseball, if that is their mentality. You cannot fully guarantee contracts for players that have no problem putting on another uniform that doesn't pay them that money. You have a responsibility to the team that cuts your checks, and that is paramount.
There is no right or wrong about this whole thing. This can happen to any athlete, it doesn’t has to happen on the field, or basketball court. I’m a Angels fan, I’m glad that Othani and Trout are playing because this would be the only time or chance for greatness. I’m sorry but the Angles are way far away from another championship…just been realistic. And if they move it to November, they’re not gonna play…MLB seasons are very long.
I don't think it gives them a chance for greatness. Ichiro led Japan to back to back WBC championships, and people still talk about how he never won a "World" series.
@@meltednostrilsbornwithoutn781 Sadly, Baseball is not about the World Series alone and Ichiro is probably happy about the outcome of his career despite not winning the chip in American soil. So yes, there's still greatness in representing your nation in International Baseball.
@@johnmarkquigley4406 Then keep on dreaming. 101 games and can't even win a playoff series. Also, you represent the narrow minded Baseball fans crying about the Edwin Diaz injury.
He's a 102 million dollar closer, if I was the Mets owner he wouldn't pitch in any games that's not a Mets game. People can hate that all they want but I'm right. $102 million $20 million this year. Ain't no way. I couldn't care less about the Puerto Rico national team he's getting paid to close games for the Mets.
He would have gotten injured anyway during the season. Don is right on this, he saw the opportunity and took it. And it's hosted by the MLB so he's fine.
Thank God this WBC did not happen around this time last year. I'm not sure given the situation at that point we would've reached our worst-case scenario of no MLB season last year.
Stf Othani is worth $600,000,000 and he is playing risking it all Juan soto is worth $500,000,000 and he is playing to all this BS that this players talking about the season and the money let’s put it this way they don’t care about they country but the money Mike trout and bets say it there’s players out there saying that winning the WBC is more important to them then a World Series ring that’s tell you how much that’s means to them they say when it comes to represent your country this goes over any money in the world
Michael using Mike Trout as an example for this is comical and im happy Peter went at him for it(even though michael stupidly tried to turn it around on peter and failed) Trout has been to the playoffs 1 time and didnt even win a game so why not go to the WBC? It's legit the only time in his MLB career where he's actually playing for something. The WBC is perfect for baseball and needs to stay as is despite what the fossils in baseball media think
Do they really think Major League Baseball wants to crown their, "World Champion" at the start of November and then crown a "Not Quite World Champion" at the end of that same month? No way MLB is going to steal their own thunder to put the WBC over. So that option is out.....next?
Spring Training is the biggest waste of time and total jerkoff baseball. I always look forward to it ending so I can watch the regular season. At least in WBC years, I can watch some meaningful baseball in March
I agree with Mike as I’m an upset Mets fan but…MLB needs this tournament not just in Latin America but here in the United States. The younger generation doesn’t care about the MLB and we need to create inroads for kids to enjoy this. Don’t believe me, just look at the fans at your local MLB stadium, they are mostly 35+ years old. More of them are late 40’s to 50’s. MLB is becoming boxing, losing importance behind NFL, NBA, CBB and College Football.
Remember several years ago when the Yankees lost Mariano Rivera when he tore his Achilles tendon shagging fly balls during BATTING PRACTICE. The Yankees went out and got another closer for that season and did just fine. Take deep breaths, people, and you'll get through this.
I kinda both agree and disagree with Michael on here. I think March is not a good time to have the WBC because players aren't fully warmed up and you'll have less players ready for opening day. But I don't think November is good either because they'd be competing with the NFL and NBA and players wouldn't want to play after the season is over. The last baseball game of the year should be the World Series just like the last football game of the year should be the Super Bowl and I was very happy when they moved the Pro Bowl from the week after the Super Bowl to the week before. If it were up to me I would have it in mid July and not have the all star game in those years and have the season reduced to like 150 games instead of the full 162. This way the players are in full strength and there's nothing else in sports going on that time of year. March you're competing with March Madness and November you're competing with the NFL and NBA.
