On his first ever trip to Dubai to open Under Armour's new flagship store, the most decorated Olympian of all time sits down for an exclusive interview with Dubai Eye Sport. In it, he talks about those who influenced his career, the sacrifices he made and what one attribute above all others separated him from his rivals. Is he open to another sensational return to the pool in Japan 2020 and just who is the greatest: Phelps or Bolt? He reveals all

Phelps: “I sacrificed a lot. Worked out 365 days a year for 5-6 years straight. I lost when I didn’t follow the process of my coach, etc.” RU-vid comments: “It’s all his genetics.”

The one thing I don’t understand is why everyone is like Michael for 2020 it’s like why can’t we just let the man retire. I understand he’s an amazing athlete and one of the reasons on why I’m swimming but everyone has to retire at some point and live there life they want to either that being in the spotlight or not it’s there choice. Why can’t some of us just accept his choice to not compete at the Olympics. I mean he has other aspirations like his own company

It’s more so the case in swimming in particular. As a former competitive swimmer myself, when you come back after a day off, your feel for the water gets messed up, and it’s only until you’ve been back in for a few days that that feel comes back. Other sports like running or weightlifting you can definitely take a day off and not feel completely off your technique, but swimming is literally moving in a different medium.
@ccbgaming6994
@ccbgaming6994 3 месяца назад
@King_SPL I agree, I’ve been running and swimming for years and the effect is much more in swimming. I think it has to do with the fact that we grow up walking, standing, or running all the time versus moving with our arms in the water.

I think the lesson we can learn from Phelps is adaption. He didn't do anything mind blowing, or revolutionary. He simple got into the water every single day. In another interview he admitted that his training was simple. He'd do crawl, breast stroke then kicks for an hour a day. I bet if we applied that every day simple strategy to other sports, that results would show. Of course training for swimming everyday is more feasable because it's such a low impact, non injury prone sport. Looool! Look at me rambling by myself on the empty part of RU-vid. 😂

אמיר לביא He literally admitted in an interview that he only trained in the pool an hour a day. Obviously there's a lot more to it than that to win at the highest level, but if you read my comment, you'd understand that I was highlighting only one thing that athletes could find interesting. And no, I'm not a swimmer, I swim on a regular basis for triathlon training. But even if I were that has nothing to do with the validity of the point I was trying to make

He spoke about learning to love himself. A lot of elite sportsmen seem deeply unhappy. As if eternal self-loathing drives them. Lance Armstrong being another example that comes to mind. Most of the time a result of terrible parenting?
@henrymasters8319
@henrymasters8319 5 лет назад
I doubt it. You can't control what people think and believe, regardless of how good a parent you are. He literally said he had a bunch of amazing father figures. The only way to be the reigning champion is to be your own worst enemy. If you're haunted by your own inadequacies that is likely what forces you to put in work when you don't want to. As he states, to go from good to great.
@dm-gq5uj
@dm-gq5uj 5 лет назад
I don't know about the parenting. It seems to me that a lot of the necessary qualities that go into making an elite athlete can also make for an isolated childhood. Most children and teens don't have the drive and focus to practice a sport for 4-5 hours a day every day - for years. Think of how you played with your friends - you went swimming for an hour or two and then got bored and went for a bike ride or played some other game. Kids like Phelps will work out rather than go to the movies, to a birthday party, to a friend's house to just hang out. That obsession sets them apart - but I'm sure it also takes a toll on their ability to socialize and relate to others. And it also must feel terribly lonely. Also, after you've been completely focused on a sport for most of your life, what happens when you can no longer compete due to age? An artist or writer can be similarly obsessed but you can continue to be an artist at age 30, 50, or 70 - and often you get better with age. Athletes have to find something else to give their lives meaning.

Yeah true, but if you look by how much the dominates his event. No one, even Michael Phelps could win a olimpic medal by such a differnece to second place percentage wise

All I'm going to say is that Caeleb Dressel just almost did what Phelps did. At this year's worlds Dressel has 6 golds and a silver and will compete for another gold tomorrow. And Caeleb has been tested many times, therefore why would Michael have to be on drugs to do what he did? Caeleb only has a silver because Cate Campbell chased down Simone Manual.

I like how he overcame his self esteem problems. It sucks to hit rock bottom, I just hope he doesn't become a huge egomaniac, which I highly doubt, by the way hahahaha

How could he swim every day in a year? Jesus, thats insane, nobody is able to do that. Perhaps when you dont work, go to school etc, when you have your private pool or something like that, than maybe, but still you have some vacation days, dating, illness, he probably did not have any life except for swimming.
