This lecture, traditionally the first in the series for the Skepticism 101 course, is based on the first couple of chapters from Dr. Michael Shermer’s first book, Why People Believe Weird Things, presenting a description of skepticism and science and how they work, along with a discussion of the difference between science and pseudoscience, and some very practical applications of how to test claims and evaluate evidence. The image for this lecture is the original oil painting for the first cover of Why People Believe Weird Things, commissioned by the publisher and painted by the artist Lawrence Berzon.

• What is a Skeptic?
This lecture, “What are Science & Skepticism?” is part of a course that Dr. Shermer teaches at Chapman University called Skepticism 101: How to Think Like a Scientist which covers a wide range of topics, from critical thinking, reasoning, rationality, cognitive biases and how thinking goes wrong, and the scientific methods, to actual claims and whether or not there is any truth to them, e.g., ESP, ETIs, UFOs, astrology, channelling, psychics, creationism, Holocaust denial, and especially conspiracy theories and how to think about them.

35:24 “I don’t need explanations because I have faith in the process. That’s a really wonderful thing, when you feel helpless, terrified.” Identify someone's personal trauma and you'll likely uncover the impetus for their irrational belief in unreliable mysticism.

Karl Popper should be part of this lesson. He says all of science is provisional. That's very different from religion where all is known.

Excellent video. I can’t wait for the following lectures. Particularly enjoyed Counting the hits and ignoring the misses. I realize how I fell for a investment newsletter because I forgot this concept.

Another excellent video, thanks very much. I particularly liked the quotes from Carl Sagan and Stephen Jay Gould, even more relevant to our world today than when they were written.

Dr. Shermer, very glad to hear you work to maintain an open-minded approach. Some fringe claims fall into that grey area - no not the Twilight Zone - but "Fortean phenomenom" after Charles Forte. Some of those claims will never pass muster for sure. Some may indeed have merit and open up new avenues of inquiry. You've got your work cut out separating the scams from genuine, as yet unexplained, phenomenon.

Put that excellent little 9 year old skeptic girl at 36:00 up for president of the Atheist Society 2040! That is... if we all haven't been burnt at the stake by the fairy tale believers by then! Great class today, Prof S. D.A., NYC

In the case of therapeutic touch if, it acts as a trigger for the release of endorphins and other good chemicals inside the body of a patient, then it is somewhat effective. In other words, if it acts as a placebo, then it is better than no effects.

Has Shermer or anybody done an investigation of chi and why practices such as tai chi and chi gong have beneficial health results?

The demarcation problem is far from solved - demonstrated by the difficulty in providing any pseudoscience that cannot qualify as science, using the definition presented @20:35. Highly recommend, and would appreciate your opinion of Fasce's most recent work on this: "Are Pseudosciences Like Seagulls? A Discriminant Metacriterion Facilitates the Solution of the Demarcation Problem".

Agreed as to scientific knowledge being provisional. At one time the theory of inherited characteristics e.g. Lamarckianism was soundly and seemingly rightfully debunked. Now we know about epigenetics and how some acquired characteristics can be passed down to succeeding generations. Whew.
