MICHAEL SPYRES dancing (and singing) Jupiter's aria "I must with speed amuse her " from George Frideric Handel's "opera in the shape of an oratorio" SEMELE, recorded in July 2023 www.fischerarti... www.michaelspyr...
The vocal resources available to this man are stunning - how the hell can he sing so magnificently while dancing and acting the impossible choreography is a mystery - and he does it all with such delight! 😊
I had the honour of attending the performance on 22nd and Mr. Spyres was the epitome of vocal perfection even under such uncomfortable and ridiculous stage conditions. This is one of Michael's best performances, his aria Come to my arms was especially divine, OMG he was so sublime. He is really a god. He should reign in baroque opera.
I hope to see and of course hear Michael in this production at the Met next year as it was just announced as the Met next season premiere. So upset I missed this one in Munich.
Wonderful. I checked the cast of this production. Several singers in the cast are also talented in acting. I'm just jealous that I didn't see the whole show.
Unless he takes serious rest of his voice after such a performance , I.e. three days of total silence these kind of antics will take its toll. Vocal cords are not indestructible
Spyres sounds breathy, spread, hollow, toneless. Also, for a director to make a singer move, dance and jerk around through a difficult number can only contribute to the kind of singing heard here.
Absolutely BUFFOONERY! This is what David McVicar has done to opera - "gee the storyline itself and singing aren't interesting enough... let's add a literal chorus line of dancers." Unbelievable, ridiculous, unnecessary, and frankly, frightening. Distract as much as possible.
You should tell that to the director. I can't imagine any other tenor being able to sing so well under such terrible conditions and also having such an inexhaustible supply of self-irony and dignity.
@@LadyIzolde-sv6vk Agree! Singers need to take back the power...and yes, to his credit, he seems unfazed by it all...but I think it would have been even better had he just sang!!
@@renatebube1234 it could be so much cleaner...I'm not saying he's bad here, just saying there's too much Euro-trash acting at the expense of his great singing.
He’s the leading singer in the world right now. He has a repertoire that spans from Handel to Wagner and flips seamlessly between the technical demands of the different repertoire. Nobody else comes close.
@@operazine The commenter did not mean “not to perform Händel” and you know it. What he or she meant is performing Händel more respectfully or similar. And he or she is right in declaring that Spyres sounds like a goat here. There is freedom of expression and of opinion which your authoritarian inclinations refuse to accept.
