From a mid 1960's album boasting a cornucopia of top contemporary songs by stellar songwriters including Leslie Bricusse and John Williams When I Look in your Eyes (Dr. Doolittle) receives a lush piano, strings and muted brass approach. Make me Rainbows was sung by Ella Fitzgerald fronting the Count Basie band a great hard swinging version Even if her voice was ragged and past its best her musicianship was in good nick.~ a great go for it version Just discovered a Lena Horne version on U Tube recorded 1967 before the Ella Fitzgerald take .The video needs lightening Lena is almost obfuscated just about make out her face but obfuscation or not Lena was a swinger and so it is here. Always reliable Vic Damone who should have reclaimed his popular stylist title did a straight ahead romantic version . composer Johnny Wiiliams also gave the song a lush treatment in the film Fitzwilly . A difficult choice. On balance the up tempo Legrand approach is my favourite but Johnny Williams runs a close second with a generously lush version on the original soundtrack ~ a great song
Even if the pitch is wonky on some Ifcopod tracks the populace at large don't seem disquieted. I'm glad to see this track moving up the "hits" list . I got (get) a lot from this album. the strings are not especially lush but the sound has a wonderful warm, idyllic atmosphere. and this track When I Look in your eyes one of the best .
