Of all Mary's relationships, I think my favourite is one that isn't even a romance, and that's the bond that she and Tom share. I really love how close they get, especially after she loses Matthew. They develop this beautiful friendship and a sibling-like closeness that's just so nice to watch.

I think you either love or hate the character of Mary. I personally adore her, because, as Michelle Dockery so brilliantly explained, she began the series as this mean unlikeable rich girl but then as the show progresses you can see so many more facets to her personality, some better, some worst. She's done so much growth in the span of six seasons, always taking in mind though that "growth" does not mean perfection. Mary is a flawed character and I think that's what's so alluring about her, that just like like Thomas Barrow she can be mean spirited and she often finds herself in troubles of her own making, but she's in no way evil or irredimable ; she can be very caring to the people she loves, she is resourceful and so remarkably strong. Love or hate her, you can't deny that Mary Crawley is a masterfully constructed character and so very thrilling to watch.

When casting gets it right... Casting gets it right. Michelle Dockerty is the only person to ever portrait Lady Mary Crawley. She's able to show the great depth in the character. One of the many things I like about Michelle Dockery's view on Mary is that she isn't blind to Mary's faults. I've seen quite a few actors who play mean characters, but insist that the character actually isn't mean, despite evidence to the contrary. Michelle is under no delusions about Mary, yet that doesn't stop her from liking the character. Which only adds to her portrayal.
@MilA-eh3gf
@MilA-eh3gf 5 лет назад
I agree. I've heard so many actors describing their character, even villains, as "misunderstood". Somehow having a reason behind henious acts make those acts ok. Seeing Michelle so honest about Mary's character even when Mary is far from a villain is refreshing. I respect her and I respect Lady Mary, these two ladies are both incredibly strong.
@Kelaiah01
@Kelaiah01 5 лет назад
@@MilA-eh3gf I suppose it has to do with something I heard about acting: unless you really like the character, you won't be believable. Perhaps a lot of actors believe that, and try to justify their character in order to help themselves cope with all the terrible things they do. Thankfully that doesn't seem to be the case with Michelle.

I'd rather have Mary (and us) heartbroken once than constantly unhappy because she's in a marriage that's almost non-existent. Especially with Matthew, when the two of them went through years of separation and problems just to be together. And what if Matthew left them right after the baby was born and showed up at home once every few months?

I loved that scene between Tom and Mary at 13:49 because I felt like it had an uncanny echo to reality. Michelle Dockery’s fiancé passed away during the filming of the series, and she’s mentioned how his death made her understand Mary better in later series. If I recall correctly it was also Allen Leech (or at least one of the cast) who’d introduced them in the first place. Either way, it was a heartfelt, beautifully written and acted scene.

Everything you said is completely spot on. There's a lot of unlikable qualities in Mary, but you end up liking her despite them. Edith has bad luck, but so much stuff is brought upon on herself. She literally started a fire. Should Mary have (forced Edith to) told Bertie about Marigold? No. But you know that Mary isn't holding Edith at a higher standard than herself, because she rejects Matthew's proposal the first time specifically because of Pamuk, and they don't get engaged until after she informs him. I think that's the real difference. Even though Mary can be cold, she's honest. I love you bringing up the servants' quarters in episode one! When she says, "I always apologize when I'm in the wrong; it's a habit of mine." Pure gold! As Michelle said in this interview, Mary knows what she's doing because, even when she goes against it, she has a moral compass, and a strong personal sense of right and wrong. I agree with you. I feel like both partners were perfect for the point Mary was in her life. With Matthew, she needed someone to soften her and to show her that she could be a kind person. Henry encouraged her to have a life again without feeling guilty about it, and also smoothed out her rougher edges.

An actor is only as good as the words she is given. She has, in this case the genius, yes pure genius, of Julian Fellowes at her back. This man is to dialogue what a Mozart or a Beethoven is to music. Beautifully crafted and then beautifully brought to life by the actors. A pure pleasure to watch on so many levels.

I was always enthralled by Lady Mary. Having grown up with four sisters I was used to cat fights. Her complicated sibling relationships seemed normal to me, apart from the unpleasantness with the Turkish ambassador of course. Lady Edith emerged as the most compelling in my imaginary world. Like all of us they were prisoners of time and place. We are riders on the storm.

The character of Mary could easily have been quite dull and two dimensional but thanks to fine writing and a wonderful actress, the character is really brought to life as a real, complex and emotional woman beneath the cool facade.

I don't think Mary IS Downton. I think Mr. Carson IS Downton. When Mr. Carson asked Mrs. Hughes to marry him, I cried. I'm a guy who doesn't cry. It was just such an endearing yet totally unconventional romance.

Also if you yell at your mother that a guy died while fucking you with an open and someone hears it oh well....its kinda your fault too (edith found out by daisy but she heard mary yell it in a conversation with their mother in case you dont remember)

Mary is my absolute favorite daughter out of the three. Always honest and blunt, and mentally and emotionally strong. She is someone I could look up to. She started off as a snob in season 1, but Matthew brought the caring person out of her (a.k.a "her softness"). It was amazing to see her relationship grow with Anna, and through her with Bates and see her help them both attain their happy ever after. With Anna, she proved she could be a good and reliable sister; a confidant and a helper. She would have helped Edith but she turned her away, there was no repairing a relationship that the other wanted to keep broken. They stopped being sisters a while after Sybil died. Another example of what a good sister she could be was her relationship with Tom. For Sybil's sake, both she and Matthew accepted Tom. And throughout the show Mary was there for Tom and to listen to him. She treated him as an equal, not as a former chauffeur or servant. It was painful to watch Mary mourn Matthew's death, but it was equally inspiring to see her stand back up stronger than before and take the reins of Downton along with Tom.

I come back to this again and again so useful to understand human emotions and the development and maturation of a person. ............. I am on the aspergers/autism spectrum and emotions, feelings and life can be hard to understand and we are often advised to watch 'soap operas' to learn about them ............. I chose Downton which is I guess a very slow 'soap opera' invaluable. I binge watched the series over a few weeks..........!!! Thank you Julian you are a master at understanding and explaining so beautifully what it is to be human (and yes I know it's unlikely he'll see this!). Hx

I know why Downton Abbey is so popular its because people back them had manners and eddicate. There were the same type of people they have today but there were things you just didn't do. People are open and discussting. Even though it was so restrictive its a relief to see people actually dress. Men didn't wear their pant around their butt. Woman half dress the fashions back then were beautiful. Dress, shoes, hats. The charactor evolved into human beings. Thay were snobs in the beginning but as time went on people who you would love to have dinner with. Love this show.💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝😁

I think you mean rich aristocrats had manners and etiquette. I don't think Downton Abbey a show about lords and their servants reflects the whole period and the people that lived through it. What about the slums, gangs, crime and violence? I don't think you'd be saying that if this show was set in an industrial town like Manchester and focused on the lives of working class people after world war 1. There was a lot of workers strikes and political aggitation. The clothes the middle class people wore are nice though.
