Birmingham, England, GREAT BRITAIN - 1995 World Figure Skating Championships, Ladies' Free Skate - Michelle Kwan of the United States skated a perfect program. But because of her somewhat immature presentation, her scores placed her only 3rd in the Free Skate. She would end up moving up from 5th to 4th Place overall. An interview with Nicole Bobek follows.

I hardly know anything about ice skating and it’s so cool watching and learning about all these different skaters. What sets this performance apart from others for me is the way she felt the music. So vibrant and on point. How you could see the clear tempo changes and moods. I used to dance, perform in color guard. Currently I’ve been in love w my quad roller skates. It’s so fun and scary learning how to pump in the bowls. I’ve only ice skated once in my life (live in southern OK so it’s not common here) concrete is just about everywhere so I love roller skating :)

On the basis of Michelle winning the LP, then: 1st Place - Michelle (SP 5th + LP 1st = 2.5 + 1.0 = 3.5 Factored Placements) 2nd Place - Chen (3rd + 2nd = 1.5 + 2.0 = 3.5 (Michelle wins on higher LP placement - tiebreaker) 3rd Place - Bobek (1st + 4th = 0.5 + 4.0 = 4.5) 4th Place - Bonaly (4th + 3rd = 2.0 + 3.0 = 5.0)

@russianskatingfan if anyone's gotten repeated gifts it's Irina Sluktskaya and her nonexistent underrotated triple triple. The only time she deserved her gold was 2005 World. She was so held up by the judges in 2000, 2001 to even get silver. 2002 GPF she won the gold which was absurd. Big jumps but no artistry with sloppy arm movements. Kwan got gifts? Michelle's grace and artistry certainly improved over the next 9 years, not so much her spins, layback and jumps tho from here. Technically peaked early in her career and maintained that nice steady level. Her father always seemed a bit tense for me in the stands...too much a 'stage father'.

Yeah, I still do not understand the logic of her not winning a medal at all. Chen Lu clearly deserved gold. Bonaly--eh--she deserved a medal but maybe not silver. But how could this not beat out Bobek who did not skate clean and did not perform with her usual verve and style? I know Nicole won the short and that saved her, but come on. Maturity aside, I really enjoyed watching this. She showed genuine enthusiasm and energy. That has to count for something, I think.
@harveywolfe8787
@harveywolfe8787 6 лет назад
You stupid clown, if you knew anything you would know Kwan was marked clearly over bobek in the long. She ended up behind Bobek due to the short program resuts which had Bobek winning and Kwan 5th. And while Kwan should have been 4th over Bonaly in the short it still wouldnt have mattered, Bobek's short program win still would have given her the bronze over Kwan. Yes Kwan clearly deserved to beat Bobek in the long program, but she did easily idiot, with only like 1 judge having Bobek higher in the long. The short program results are the only reason Bobek won the bronze. Only an idiot who knows nothing about skating or skating scoring would need that explained.

So the judges were absolutely right. Lu was the rightful winner on the 2nd mark. Surya deserved and was given the highest technical mark which gave her the silver, losing gold to Chen on the 2nd mark. Kwan had the 2nd best technical which put her 3rd overall in the long, but Nicole's short won her the bronze. As for 96 if many didnt think Kwan was the wrong winner why do so many people still debate the decision to this day. Sorry many did think Kwan was gifted that year.

@intldawn Kwan did place 3rd in the long ahead of Bobek. Bobek was 4th in the long but since she was 1st in the short she was gauranteed a medal unless she placed below Markova in the long. Whoever of Bonaly or Kwan came 3rd in the long was going to lose overall to Bobek because Bobek won the short program (which she clearly deserved) and Bonaly and Kwan were both out of the top 3 in the short (which also was right). What a joke. At the very last the scoring of the presentation side of the 96 Worlds was totally wrong. Lu Chen was not given anything in her career. In fact she was often robbed of a higher placing. Politics is what caused Lu Chen not to win in 1996. It was the political artistic mark that Lu Chen supposedly "lost" in 1996 while skating one of the most artistic programs ever performed just as Mao's LP also to Rach II was lowballed. Classic examples of how skaters from Asian countries are lowballed no matter how superior the artistic performance is.

And the judges gave Kwan breaks many times in her career. The 99 Worlds she should have been 7th or 8th in the short program and not even able to medal. The 2000 Nationals where she should have been 4th in the short and lost to Cohen as a result. The 2002 Olympics where she did not deserve to win the short program. And Kwan has never been robbed of a title she deserved, except arguably the 98 Olympics, but she was lucky not to win there anyway as she would have retired had she won.

Give it a damn rest. She was NEVER given a break. Michelle was always held to a higher standard than most of her competitors. She always had to do more triples or she would lose, even against other skaters who had lower quality jumps than herself (I.e. Tara Lipinski). Kwan set the bar for ladies skating for a decade. It's a shame so many haters still gotta hate to this day. Kwan won what she won, and didn't win what she didn't win. She had an incredible career. And proved you don't need Olympic Gold in order to be immensely popular. Just give it a rest.

Here she interprets only a little girl who is happy to jump, it's terribly far from the dramatic music of Saint-Saens. 5.6 is the most fair marks

Michelle was robbed. She should have won the free skate (or at least a medal).

@ziyhuang It is hilarious you say Slutskaya was gifted to win silver at the 2000 and 2001 Worlds but then claim Kwan was not to win silver at the 99 Worlds. Kwan at the 99 Worlds skated much worse than Irina at the 2000 and 2001 Worlds. Also even if Irina didnt skate her best at the 2000 and 2001 Worlds there was nobody other than Michelle in the long program who skated better. The only time she was gifted was once at the GP final, an even nobody cares about anyway.

Kwan's silver at the 1999 World Championship was the biggest crock of the decade. Kwan fanatics are always the one crying about the judges when she is in fact one of the most OVERscored skaters ever, not underscored. She was never robbed of a result or win or medal she earned, not even once. While many of her wins or medals are questionable- bronze at 2002 Games over Cohen and Suguri, silver at 99 worlds huge joke, win at the 96 Grand Prix final, some of her grand prix wins especialy the 2 Skate Americas over Hughes.

@@harveywolfe8787 Tara Lipinski said : Michelle Kwan is an idol of mine. One of the best skaters all the time was making me work harder and harder. 🤫 The ISU raised the age limit to 17 NOW, which means Tara Lipinski didn't deserve to win and she should go to the kid's Olympics.

@idolfan9495 Surya had triple-triples which makes her triples more valuable and her program far more difficult technically than Michelle's. It more than compensates for 1 or 2 minor cheated jumps. Her jumps also had more power than Michelle's, and many of Michelle's had no flow coming out. And Michelle was not artistically strong either in 95. And saying she deserved to beat Lu is a joke. Lu had far better artistry than Michelle in 95 and sufficient technical to win.

Roger, idolfan is the blindest and most biased Kwan fanatic ever, which given what insanine monster Kwan fanatics in general are is saying something. Dont even bother reasoning with him/her/it.
