In this video, I go all in on exploring Pontiac. Pontiac is the seat of Oakland County, Michigan, one of the wealthiest counties in the USA with a population of more than 1 million residents.
Pontiac, like many Michigan cities, has historically relied on the manufacturing industry. Once those jobs went away, you have many buildings and neighborhoods left to decay.
Below is a timetable of the places that I explore:
Abandoned Franklin Elementary School: 2:18
The Village at Bloomfield 4:17
Pontiac's nice neighborhood 6:49
Abandoned Washington Middle School 7:21
Pontiac General Hospital: 9:04
Abandoned Webster Elementary School 9:27
Abandoned Lincoln Jr. High School 12:06
GM Complex 15:21
Abandoned Le Baron Elementary School 15:35
Site of the 2nd ever Kmart store, and the abandoned Glenwood Shopping Center 18:10
Former Pontiac Silverdome Site 20:42
Old Silverdome Footage from 2017: 21:05
United Shore Headquarters 22:32
Abandoned Longfellow School 23:50
Abandoned Perdue Academy 24:46
Downtown Pontiac 26:10
Abandoned Pontiac Central High School 29:00
Abandoned Summit Place Mall 31:07
Oakland County Government Center 31:55

Here's a fact about the shopping centers,located in Pontiac Michigan. Back in the 50s,the ONLY place that people could shop for ALL of their clothing,home furniture and appliances,school supplies,hardware,lawn mowers etc,was in downtown Pontiac. Later,out on Telegraph road,local investors built,the very FIRST strip mall in America,Miracle Mile. Later,in the early 60s,investors built the very FIRST, INSIDE shopping mall,the Pontiac Mall,in America.
@1L6E6VHF
@1L6E6VHF 4 года назад
Uh... Southdale in Edina, MN opened in 1956.
@markusallport1276
@markusallport1276 3 года назад
You are incorrect. The actual facts are these: The "Park and Shop," was the first strip mall in America, in Washington D.C. circa 1930. And again wrong about the first indoor shopping mall, that was Southdale, it opened in 1956 in Edina, Minnesota. The first Michigan indoor shopping mall was Northland Mall in Southfield opened in 1954. Pontiac Mall, ( later named Summit Place Mall), isn't even in Pontiac, it's in Waterford, it was a conglomerate group who financed and built the Mall. And the "Miracle Mile" was a drive In Theater on Telegraph. The Miracle Mile you are speaking of is located on Telegraph Rd. in Bloomfield Hills, again not Pontiac. You might want to research and read a little more for accuracy, before labeling your words as fact.

Chris Harden, good first start for the video. Since you plan to do another video of Pontiac, I’d like to recommend the Oakland County Historical Society. There are people there who would be very helpful with filling you in on some of the iconic history of Pontiac and the buildings you passed or missed. Maybe you can add in more dialogue about the history of Pontiac and it’s future plans. Cheers and best luck to you in your RU-vid plans!

Here's another little known fact about Pontiac,Michigan. Before the Silver Dome was built,out on Opdyke rd.,that area was known as HILL 90. This sandy,bumpy and small hill area was used as a place for ANYONE that had enough nerve,to go out and test your skills at moto crossing and raising a little Hell,without any recourse. A lot of local motor cycle gangs would spend their time out there,drinking beer,smoking joints and just hanging out and showing off their VERY cool choppers. Not far from there,on University Drive, a custom built motor cycle shop sat in a small yellow building,owned by the now famous Ron Finch. Ron and his crew could be seen out on Hill 90,just playin' it cool,but at the same time,letting ANYONE and EVERYONE know,that they OWNED Hill 90,and you better show some respect to them,if you had enough nerve to venture onto their personal outdoor club house. Me and my crew,would ride out there on our Hondas and try to master the dreaded Hill 90.It was the highest,most dangerous hill of them all!!!

In the Glenwood Shopping Plaza where to old Farmer Jack's was, it also a Salvation Army distribution center for a while. I worked for a local business who rented the Farmer Jack's just before the development company bought it. We had a 6 month lease but we were paying for the electric for the grower that was in the front section of the Farmer Jack, and the lawn service company across the parking lot. I was raised in Pontiac, lived there through the 50-mid 70s. Back then it was a really nice town. The Clinton River used to run through downtown beside the library, the old Michigan Bell building and then on out of town where you can still see it by Oak Hill Cemetery. Things changed when first the foundry was closed and torn down, Fisher Body was moved to Ohio then Pontiac Motors closed and finally Gm Ruck and Coach. I grew up on Beverly just three houses down from LeBaron Elementary. In 1994 I moved back on $th street off of Barkell and lived there for 20 years. At first things had started to go better for the city when the movie industry started up with many projects there but Governor Snyder ended that and the city started downhill again. At first it was still a great neighborhood though the city itself had changed greatly but after the crash of 2007-8 and the city going bankrupt it began to go down too. I moved away in 2014. It is sad to see what has become of Pontiac.

Awesome video! I live and have lived next to Pontiac my whole life so I may feel more naturally comfortable in it than most, but it's a place I consider moving to. It's affordable unlike everything else around it and it's also very centrally located so even though there are not many businesses within the city there are plenty around in Bloomfield and Waterford. Places like Pontiac will never get better until people start moving back in. There's already a fair amount of entertainment nearby in terms of bars, clubs, and restaurants. Considering the impression I get where many young people are staying single or not having children, this makes the city of Pontiac appealing as it is affordable, potentially fun, and the lack of schools is not bothersome. Hopefully this would get it back on it's feet so eventually it would appeal to families as well. I like your chill content, keep it up!

@@ChrisHarden Pontiac's downtown has potential, to possibly make a comeback I will say. Though I can those past urban renewal signs that to me I wish they hadn't had done decades ago, i.e. the parking garage on the south part of its downtown that cut off one of its streets running into downtown. Like you and others are hinting at, it has bones where older buildings could be renovated, if efforts are done to do them in time. It was sad seeing all the abandoned school buildings here, where that reminds me of Flint, MI, Detroit, and Gary, IN.

@cherylengnell9106
@cherylengnell9106 3 года назад
There are about a half dozen schools still open that are part of Pontiac School District. We have had many charter schools open in the city. Many families have chose to do school of choice . We moved here in 1999 and homeschooled. We have been here 20 years and have become great friends with many of our neighbors. Every summer , the big question for many was,” where are my kids going to school?” Lots of parents drove their children to other districts. One of our son’s attended a newly formed magnet school called International Technology Academy in 2010. That school started in 2009 the same time many schools closed. When the two high schools were joined into one , many families were upset and pulled their children out of the district schools and sent them to charter schools or schools in other cities. That caused a major deficit for the district since the years budget is normally based on the student count the year before.

@@cherrimullins9632 absolutely!! A lot of people thought that living on the outskirts of town, their kids would not go to Pontiac schools. But they did. One shady guy came up and grabbed my "tom-boy" girlfriend, (who was in the 4th grade) in her privates to "see if she was a dude". Police were in and out of the projects All the time. Pontiac is not that bad. The city is free of debt and positive now. There is nice neighborhoods. The county it lies in is super rich and the surrounding cities lend officers etc. the problem the downtown has is there’s a big loop that kind of re directs you rather than let you go in down town. They are fixing that and got the plan approved. Years ago houses there were 10-30k now the area is more diverse. There is 300k houses newly built. It’s location is too too good for it to completely fail. Needs a few years I think because the schools are bleh but it’s really not bad. I see people here say that it’s so dangerous etc none of the Pontiac thugs could make it in Detroit.
