As Labour pledges to renationalise railways within five years if elected, Nick Ferrari speaks to General Secretary of the RMT Union, Mick Lynch, to discuss the plans.
Labour says it will do this by bringing passenger services into public control as the contracts expire, but has stressed there will still be a role for the private sector.
Other railway pledges include automatic refunds for train delays and improving internet connections.
Speaking on whether renationalising railways would make industrial action less likely, Lynch tells Nick: 'What we've got at the moment is an assault on people's terms and conditions.
'We can get rid of all this nonsense and get a railway that's run to the needs of the public.'

Renationalisation - it's a futile option as the Conservatives will be back in power in ten years time. The corrupt Tories will simply flog off any renationalised industries back to their friends, donors and business associates at below market value. Better to strengthen industry regulators to ensure the privatised services deliver decent services, cost effectively. Change the law to ensure privatised services cannot pay dividends to shareholders or take out loans against the business until they provide decent services.

Privatisation of the railways in the UK has been a disaster. It might of worked, if the system that Japan implemented had been copied for Britain, what with having the track and trains owned by the same company, much like the famous "Big Four" from the past. This system has been a complete mess, and really a lot of public money which could of been spent on upgrading the infrastructure is syphoned off to shareholders.

Even in areas of free market competition, it can still be advantageous to have a public alternative. Helps keep the competition in check - the BBC is a great example of this. Whatever you think about BBC news (which I find deeply irritating that this is the only thing that is bought up when people talk about getting rid of the BBC as a whole), in other countries where there is no public broadcasting private companies go INSANE with adverts. sometimes 20 minute add breaks every 15 minutes. Doesn't happen in the UK because people will just switch to the BBC.

The railways were never designed to be profitable just by passenger services. They were built as a means of moving goods and passengers were an after thought. Once the goods started to move onto the roads the major area to make a profit was taken away. It simply doesn't matter who runs the passenger services they cannot offer an opportunity for profits and service it is one or the other. Get the long haul goods back on the railways and they will make more money to offset passenger travel. It will get HGV's off the roads, improve road traffic movement and reduce the amount of money that has to be spent on road repairs.

Nationalisation is likely to have little impact because the state is already heavily financially committed. Subsidies. As in the 1940's the nationalisation is driven by a political ideology rather than a complete vision of the future of railway in the UK. HS2. We could fully expect poorly defined objectives, no focus, unrealistic expectations by senior management and wasteful expense either by decision or default. Millennium Dome. I truly hope I am wrong, however history points that this cycle is yet another mechanism to transfer wealth into private hands, and again once the project fails and public services are again privatised. This is the real risk, and I fear natrionaisation is not the solution.

Lynch will be celebrating as the Tories are on the way out and Labour likely to gain power soon {though not under Corbin as he would have preferred), and renationalise the railways, which is exactly what he wants. The many strikes by his members have been partly political in the hope of achieving this. The privatisation of the railways under John Major was a bureacratic minefield with the system split into many different companies but the former nationalised system run by BR was far from perfect with lines such as the old Great Central deliberately run down and its traffic diverted to other routes so that a case could me made for closure. Its demise is now recognised as a huge mistake. As for Lynch and his brothers, after a period of grace the threat of strikes will return as a means of levering ever higher rates of pay for his members and railway travel will continue to cost more than many can afford.
