No he isn't! Why? He is the guitarist in the most glamorous and notorious metal band of all time! Can you be any more +rated? I dont think so.. he is one of the top players of our generation. None less
Same here. I don't strive to play like him. I never could in a million years! But I've always strived for his tone. His tone on the first two records is my gold standard for tone.
Mick is so underrated. Hes a beast. That's why Nikki has a tattoo of him on his body and not Tommy or vince. Lol. But seriously. Mick is so bluesy its sick. Great vid
Oh YAY! Mick Mars is a personal hero of mine. Not so much the playing, more the fact that I have Ankylosing Spondilitis like him. Now I get to look a bit into his playing. Thanks! :)
Thank you very much for this lesson. Mick is so underrated as a player though he is one of a kind. No one could ever take his job and the Crew knew that, so they quit.
Mick Mars is absolutely underrated. The movie was about Crue, and with most things about Crue it's always about Tommy, Vince and Nikki. He was always about avoiding the limelight and bringing the riffs. Jake E. Lee replacing Mick? Even Jake said that would have been stupid.if you dont know what I'm talking about, look into it. I was shocked too.
I've seen it probably somewhere around 50 times... Maybe more... Call me crazy, it's ok. I can recite pretty much the whole thing. It's a great movie and I never get sick of it 😂💜
Awesome video, The Dirt got me to play Motley for the first time and now I've been LOVING standard D and the heavy tone and spicy riffs (basically everything Mick Mars). You're video put the fine touch on the tabs ive been learning from.
Incredibly comprehensive! This video is going to get hundreds of thousands of views. I'm glad to have found another great guitar teacher on RU-vid. Subscribed!
Awesome video dood. Finally subscribed cuz of it. These type of videos help me, a intermediate with no formal lessons player like myself, play cool stuff like this.
Mick Mars is awesome. He can do things with his techniques that you can't figure out. When he plays live you can watch him and he camouflages a lot of them. Leaves you just scratching your had.
I absolutely love inverted fifths those and sus4 or sus2 chords add some mutes or even chorus and distortion boom 80s rock I find it interesting that people miss out on great tech because they don’t like a band or it’s not their thing but even if you are not a huge fan many great bands have amazing techniques you can improve with And just because we do or don’t connect with a band doesn’t make the great or not Because of this many great players are written off or over looked Thanks for the vid sure to be many great techniques here
This video helped me so much I was doing unison bends wrong amd couldn't figure out why. Now I know it because I was bending both notes at the same time
Great stuff. I just learned Wildside and wrapping up Girls Girls Girls. Mick was the man in the 80s. Also trying to learn the art of improvisation. Thanks for the videos.
Riding the "Dirt" wave...but not complaining! I've always liked Mick's playing. His solos in Starry Eyes blew my mind years ago and to this day it's still my favourite Crue song. Wish you'd do Alex Skolnick or Glenn Tipton...
Nice & thanks for this wonderful video. But you missed one Mick Mars's guitar technique that i call is Invisible tremolo or Invisible whammy bar & this technique is their in Mötely Crüe live wire intro of 2nd verse. Mick Mars use this technique Invisible tremolo or Invisible whammy bar on this Gibson les Paul fixed bridge guitar. & you can see this Mick Mars guitar technique called Invisible tremolo or Invisible whammy bar on Live wire live in US festival 1983.
Right cool Mike! I'm glad that Motley movie came out (I haven't seen it yet) but there's tons of great Mick lessons out there because out it! Awesome bro, thank you much!! 🎸🎸🎸🎼🎼👍
Mick Mars is a fantastic guitar player. Sure, he doesn't do anything fancy technique-wise, but he is as solid as they come. The easiest way to put it is, Mick Mars serves the song that he is playing. Three piece band, so he had to be smart with his solos and any mid-song lead lines. As someone who has been playing guitar for 26 years and teaching lessons for 13 or 14, I can comfortably say that Mars is a very good and underrated guitar player. He didn't need to play 2 minute long solos to show how good he was. That wouldn't have worked in a 3 piece like Motley. Covering Motley songs are a lot like covering AC\DC songs. As in the sense that they sound easy to cover and it is easy to play all of the notes. But to do it properly and/or to sound like Mick, it takes a lot of skill. Saying that he is 'solid' is probably the best way to sum him up, actually. It is kind of like Phil Rudd's drumming. Take it away and the band totally changes and no one can perfect replicate it. ...any non-fans out there should listen to the 'Home Sweet Home' guitar solo to hear a guitar solo that serves the song perfectly. Not difficult to play..but you can sing it, it fits, it suits he song and he doesn't simply mimick or follow the vocal melody that so many ppl do with their solos. Mick Mars is legit.
I want a Jackson guitar after watching this video. lol. I've been a Strat player from the beginning just because its what I learned on but that Jackson looks like it plays like a dream. Great video BTW. I always felt like Mick Mars was one of the best riff players/writers
I haven't seen much of you lately. I'm Subbed to your channel and maybe the impending doom were facing has filled the spot you used to fill. I hope you didn't give up on us! I will be turning 50 on the 12th of December and I'm still learning new licks on my Jackson Fusion XL Pro SN: 924489. It looks close to yours. I hate the color of mine and the bridge pickups are different but mine was made when you were a toddler. My Daughter is 27 years old now. I bought brand new from Guitar Center my Jakson before I knew my now X-wife was impregnated. So now It could be 30 years old. I play 4 to 6 hours a day. I have my main rack mount setup in the living room and a secondary setup in my tomb. It sounds close enough so when I play in the living room it's like the heavens are singing with me. I have always used Ernie Ball Super Slinky #9' strings but now seems like I have to change them every 2 weeks. When I bought my guitar I walked in and fanned out 15 credit cards and said I'm not leaving without my next guitar. They found me a guitar tech. I said to him I'm gonna find an amp that sounds like my Marshall and you bring me guitars. After about 30 different guitars and who knows how many hours this took they finally brought me the Jakson I have today. I did have to change the tremolo. I kept breaking string saddles. Come to find out a licensed Floyd Rose is not a real Floyd Rose. A licensed Floyd Rose is made of Chinesiaume. Since then I have had no problems 28 years later.
This really bums me out because I put out multiple videos per week and people keep saying this. It's like RU-vid isn't notifying you that I'm uploading but I am. Can you be sure you have the bell icon selected and that you're subscribed. Thanks.
I recently got int Crue, kinda ignoring them for a while until ive heard theyre making a move. First album i've tried was shout at the devil. Dude, that intro riff got me straight away. Not the most complex songs (literally 3 same chords in many songs), but man they hype you up!
Mick has stated that he doesn’t play by “the book”. I think it was on the Decade Of Decadence video. I’ve played a lot of his stuff from Too Fast to Feelgood and he totally is totally amazing especially live.
Mick was never underated - if you played metal or whatever in the 80's you couldn't not absorb his playng and appreciate all the balls he brought. Lotsa peeps didn't like the whole costume thing. The SoCal thrash bands took care of that, but Mick had his own space. He was the front end of that band.
People complain that Mick Mars is underated. Well the reason he is underated is he is not all that great. And even Mick himself knows he's not. Which is why Mick himself doesn't complain about being underated
No kidding but I've been trying to learn how to play guitar for the the last 20yrs...and still can't play the most basic stuff 😆. Scales have never meant anything to me - I find them very difficult to understand. However, this video has finally helped me to get a little bit more of a handle of things👍
Watching this video made me realise, that ive been doing the palm mute bounce technique for the better half of my 7 years of playing, i never paid any attention to it, because i thought that it actually was any type of technique... And yes... I come from Metallica as well \m/
Love these videos. Would be super awesome if you made a video about Criss Oliva techniques from Savatage. Very underrated guitar god and his unique style is very interesting. Sucks he passed back in 1993.
Cool video....very informative and helpful ! Thanks! I love Mick Mars....one of my fav. guitarists and I think he's underrated! I know I could never play it so I don't know how hard it is to play his guitar solo for Home Sweet Home but I think that's one of the coolest most memorable solos ever! I've heard very few people actually copy it note for note and sound good....so it must be fairly difficult! Thanks again....great video!
Yardley Yardley - I just wrote a message about that solo, actually. The ' Home Sweet Home' solo is a perfect solo, in my opinion...in the sense that it perfectly suits and fits the song. It has multiple sections...all building and building.. He doesn't just follow the vocal melody, like so many ppl do with their solos. Instead, it is a great melodic piece of music that makes the song better. It isn't difficult to play, technique-wish. But it has a lot of feel and emotion, which is hard to replicate. I have played guitar for 26 years and while it isn't difficult to play the notes, it is hard to give it the feel that Mars does. I put it right up there with solos like David Gilmour's solo in Pink Floyd's, 'Comfortably Numb', as in it is as close to perfect as one can get with a guitar solo that perfectly fits, suits and complements a song. It is definitely my favorite Mick Mars guitar solo. You also have to remember that Motley is a 3 piece with a singer. So when playing live, there is no rhythm guitar when playing the solo. So it is definitely an effective solo in the sense that it doesn't seem like the whole band doesn't 'fall out' during a solo. (yes, I know they use backing tracks on some songs..but they aren't evident during that solo). Mick is a great player and doesn't get a fraction of the recognition he deserves.
13:40 Try to make mistakes, its what he is try to accomplish….. I accomplished these kind of mistakes the first year I started playing, then I got a lot better. For the love of God, I wish people would stop using the "its artistic" excuse for sloppy playing. You do not have to be a great guitarist to "make it" and being a Great guitarist does make you "make it".
Thanks man. Awesome video! Mick's guitar work was what inspired me to want to learn guitar. I heard Theatre of Pain back in 1985, and a 10 year old kid was mesmerized. And again, 2 years later on Girls, Girls, Girls. Also, in 1987 I began my journey learning guitar. Thanks Mick!
I'll never forget the day when we went out with Loshi and bought To Fast For Love and Shout at the Devil the same day. We went back to your moms apartment, listened to the records, were literally terrified, and decided we should be better Christians. XD
you are an amazing, Technical for the beginners, instructor, up most respect to you. i can do most of what you play, yet i get it and play by ear, so thats either bad or impressive i am not sure, yet to teach what i have found, nah cant, you do a great job!!!!! the harmonics by MC and the Randy (GOD) Rhoads was , shall i say, or bow, love your explanations and detail
