Mick Schumacher's real F1 comeback options beyond 2023 Mercedes role

Mick Schumacher finally has a silver lining after losing his Haas drive and splitting from Ferrari.
The son of F1 legend Michael Schumacher has joined Mercedes as a reserve driver for 2023, ahead of what Mick hopes will be a proper F1 comeback in 2024.
Schumacher was part of the Ferrari Driver Academy for four years and raced two seasons in F1 with Haas, but now he has a change of scenery that at least gives him a good short-term programme.
That work will be Schumacher’s immediate priority but there will also be an effort to find him a racing return in 2024 - and while that is really, really unlikely to be with Mercedes, we think Schumacher has some realistic options elsewhere.

Also, Toto seems to genuinely like Mick. And considering that Toto helped Ocon when he was without a seat, I believe that Toto will try to do the same with Mick.

Ocon was his client and Schumacher being an actual German in a German team bodes well for sponsors and general marketing. Both of these cases have little to do with Wolff particularly liking them. Let's not be naive.

Yeah, Toto is quality, one thing I'm not sure of is whether he'll represent Mick, be his agent, as he is for Esteban and George. Realistically, Aston seems to be the best option and even that's a bit of a stretch because it would require one of these 3 options: 1. Alonso to retire and Aston to not promote Drugovich (Toto could easily pull a few strings here); 2. Sir Lancelot to finally get tired of driving in circles and decide to find a new hobby. Even if Drugovich gets promoted in 2024 after his departure, Mick could still wait for Fernando's retirement since even he can't race forever and fully replace him in 2025; 3. both of them leave at the end of the next season, in which case he gets a clean slot. Also, since he joined Mercedes, I can't see him going to Sauber/Audi - Toto wouldn't allow that unless Mick breaks the contract himself.

Putting a German in a German team, just like putting a Frenchman in a French team in my mind is short sighted as you should put the best person in the car that is available and if they are German or French, then that is a bonus.

I’m sorry but Max , George and Charles also had crashes . Even Yuki and albon and yet everyone’s hard on mick. Race wise he got absolutely shafted by haas most of last year. He did amazing in Austria until kev didn’t want to play the team game. He won f2 regardless of the other drivers. He does have potential and the only one at haas that helped him was his engineer. The rest was all for k mag

The first three easily podium and/or won. A massive gulf in talent. Yuki and Albon are a few rungs down. Three years for Yuki, he is someone's favored son. But his time is running out. Mick's P6 was a fluke. In 44 races, he succeeded in ruining Latifi's unrivaled shot at P20. To win F2, it took a second year to sandbag the younger boys.

For the people who have properly followed Micks season rather than jumping on the surname bandwagon, they will know Mick has developed a lot in the 2022 season (he leads the race H2H vs Mag) and questionable strategy calls dropped him from points finishes at a few GP's. He made errors but it was pretty much his first season because the 21 season was an absolute write off with the F2 car he was given. GS is the worst possible team manager for a rookie and Im glad he is under the guidance of Toto now

Seeing Mick in Mercedes colors is painfully weird. Idk how all of that went internally, but I'm thinking that if he would not have been dropped, Vasseur would have gotten used for him.
@SkodaYetiFan
@SkodaYetiFan Год назад
Well it seems like Ferrari really didn't have a use for him in F1. Both Ferrari drivers are locked in for the next 2 seasons and let's be real he is not fast enough to be a worthy replacement for either and they don't have a say in the 2nd seat at Alfa/Haas anymore so they can't use their influence to get him a seat there. They could've kept him as a reserve and use all the marketing potential of his surname which is pretty much the only reason Mercedes have signed him for.

Only one question to ask, what are the bookmakers' odds that Mick crashes in his first drive as a backup driver to a Mercedes engine customer?
@purple4395

I think Mick deserves a comeback. Also I think his chances aren't bad. I wouldn't be surprised if we see 1 or more people retire and it's also entirely possible that one of the rookies is underperforming.

I do think this man’s career relies upon Yuki’s season next year. With him being “team leader” and having a “rookie” teammate it relies upon him and the only seat I see opening up is that seat unless Sargent does an awful job next season

Next to Red Bull there is no better team to a lay off with. Ironically Haas may regret letting Mick go. A short term improvement for them perhaps with respect to DNF but long term they will need younger drivers. Imagine the scenario where he gets a drive this next season for one race and he places better than Haas. The pundits will go nuts with their I told you so.

It is completely useless to speculate who ends where and when. Look at the TR/AT-RB driver switching. At one point one driver looks to get the better deal just to realize how stuck he is. Or take Vettel's retirement and what that caused. You say that Mick getting Merc drive is unlikely, but in 6 months maybe Ham says he is going to retire after the 2023 season and Mick is in the Merc for 2024. We don't know what is going to happen.

I mean, if Lewis has another year like 2022, are we sure he will sign again for Mercedes? Maybe exit while he is still regarded highly wouldn't be a wrong move. Plus, Mick being German, I think nothing would please more Mercedes bosses to have a compatriot have a shot at a title once again.
@kidkarbon4775

Couldn't see Mick having a shot at the title in a Mercedes as at this time no evidence currently exists that suggests he would be capable of beating Russell in the same car.
