After months of speculation, it’s finally been confirmed: Mick Schumacher will not race for Haas in 2023, with Nico Hulkenberg making a full-time return to Formula 1 in his place.
It’s a decision that’s been a long time coming given Hulkeberg was first linked to the seat in early September. Eponymous team owner Gene Haas and Guenther Steiner gave Schumacher every chance to prove himself, but ultimately decided not to keep him both for on and off-track reasons.
The second Haas seat alongside Kevin Magnussen was the last vacancy on the 2023 grid, meaning the full line-up for next season is in place.

@@greg2kdotcom Well "The Race" is a business and like all businesses they need money to survive. Also, there are quite a few of us who enjoy F1 and are from the USA so what's wrong with having something that we can use? I highly doubt if it were a product only available in Britain you would care, after all, every race I hear about the sky sports replay feature even though that's not available here and it doesn't bother us nor do I imagine you care about "all the other countried" who have to hear that. Besides, I'm sure a simple VPN would remedy your concern.

that's puts you in perspective how important it is to be a stable driver. a glimpse of raw pace doesn't pay the bill of destoyed cars. if you look at the rookie this season, Zhou Guanyu isn't the fastest rookie in recent years by any stretch of the imagination. but he scored points multiple times while making less unforced errors than 90% of rookies in recent years. and AR extended his contract with 1/3 of the season left. you can clearly see what kind of driver the teams want by examining the case of Mick and Guanyu.

@@mrgforces honestly i wouldn't call him underrated overall. i mean he did change pretty much everyone's mind just after a few races. but his ability to push the car and not make it spin is indeed not very common in a rookie. usually his race pace is good during the first stint and slowly falls away after the first pit. he can be an ocon level driver as soon as next year once he gets more experience on management of tyre, battery charge etc. and frankly AR owes him a lot of track time.

I do think Mick's problem has always been that he has been kinda slow getting up to speed in new machinery, for instance his rookie season in F2 he was really nowhere at all finishing 150 points behind Latifi (which is a red flag in it self). Even in his Championship season he had a slow start, and barely beat Tsunoda who was a rookie. Then this year he was also rather slow in the first half of the season, which is a big blow to Haas as the car in the beginning had potential for top 10 every weekend. And with how much the cars change being slow to adapt is not a trait any F1 driver should have. No matter how big potential they got. And personally i dont think that Mick has potential to be a Norris, Lerclerc, Russel or Verstappen.

In fairness to him the Prema car in 2019 was absolutely nowhere because the team were going through a big restructure and putting all their focus on Formula 3 which was why their car was 2 seconds faster than everything else, he also had Sean Geleal alongside him so… it’s similar to this year with Prema, because their focus is on ELMS and the main LMP2 championship, their focus on formula 2 has dropped off

Haas is a team where F1 careers go to die. From Schumacher to Grosjean, hell, even Magnussen would be out of F1 if it wasn't for them having to replace Mazepin at the beginning of the season. A bad owner who doesn't want to invest money into the sport, a team principal who can't keep his mouth shut when he needs to and in consequence creates a toxic working environment for everyone around him (as much as Steiner is a good personality for the sport, his abilities as team principal are rather suboptimal), and ready is the concoction that is Haas F1. I've seen a great analogy today, I'll just copy it here: "Haas is like that first real job out of college where it's the first time you're earning big-boy money and have a nice job title. Except you find out that the work culture is hell, pay is bad and there's no professional development. There's no career advancement if you stay and the company lurches from crisis to crisis because they don't have a solid foundation to stand on." Case in point, the sooner Gene sells the team to anybody who actually wants to do anything of substance in the sport, the better.

I think the points situation is a bit of a false sign. Kevin had a good start to the season when Mercedes and Mclaren where struggling for pace and Alpine for reliability. Schumacher didn't really get up to speed until halfway through the season, by that time they had gone from maybe the 4th fastest car to the 7th. Apart from Brazil Mick has been pretty much as fast as Kevin in the second half of the season.

Non competitive car equals poor results no matter the driver behind the wheel. This was reflected in the Brazilian sprint race, look at how Magnussen went from 1st to 8th. That was a reality check. Haas was the worst thing that could have happened to Schumacher. Last year was just a waste for everyone involved with Haas and this year, he had a lot of great drives, that nobody noticed because they completely fucked up the strategy or simply had a bad car that weekend. Just take this video as an example. The Interlagos quali wasn't because he was too conservative, but because they fucked up his out lap, putting him into the middle of traffic, not allowing him to get any heat into the tires. Obviously you don't notice any of this if you don't keep an eye on what is happening with his races, however if you were, you would be aware that he was clearly outperforming K-Mag on sundays. But I'm glad they hired Hulk. At least Gene Haas can't ruin his career.

With all that correctly said it seems to be a potential thread starting a F1 career as a slow earning curve if the team is not able to invest in you to succeed

I must be truly British because I've *always* wanted Haas to do well, and hopefully this change will help drive their success. Bit sad for Mick though, I like the kid, but it's been clear he's not up to it since season start. Happy to see the Hulk back in a seat though, I like him too... Which kinda means he's buggered (I've been a Danny Ricc fan since he joined the grid, same with Kubica... And look how they ended...)

If you are going to fire a driver whos in his 2nd year in F1,half of the grid wouldn't be there in the first place. I hope he can recover this mentally cuz ı dont want to remember him like wasted potential.

Half the grid proved themself as beneficial in someway within two years. Even latifi despite not being a good driver benefited the Williams teams by keeping the lights on. What did Mick do? Didn't perform in the car, cost money in crashed and clashes with management. Only upside was the 1&1 sponsorship, that Haas could survive without (and given their demands were for a German driver, guessing hulk fits the bill for them anyway)

Mazepin had only 1 year in a bad car and was yeeted despite paying 2022 seat and development money. Unlike Mazepin, Schumacher has had time to prove himself against a driver that was out of F1 but continues to completely total his cars.

If he can land a reserve driver role/go to WEC (where consistency is more important than just raw pace), he'll be able to get another drive in F1. Hulkenberg won't be there forever Hamilton is probably retiring in the next few years Alonso probably retiring in a few years (though Drugovich looks to have that role) If Sargeant doesn't perform, Williams will have a spot in a couple years Shakeups to come. 2 years ago, if you asked people "would Daniel Ricciardo be out of F1?", nobody would have said "yes". Its a ruthless sport in that regard, but one that gives opportunity. In that same vein, how Pascal Wehrlein hasn't come back into F1, confuses me.

Personally I think it’s a bit harsh, after all ‘22 has in reality been Mick’s one and only proper season, last year’s Haas having been so far off the pace. It’s also rather sad not to have the Schumacher name on the grid. Forza Mick!

Maybe if Haas could stop shafting Mick and Magnussen in races due to poor pitstops and strategy they'd score more points. It doesn't matter whether it's Hulkenberg, Hamilton or Verstappen in that Haas seat, they'd still deal with these issues and it's not going change with a different driver at the wheel. At the end of the day it's very easy to look at the standings and see Mick has done nothing this season, but when you look at races where him and Magnussen are in the points and suddenly they both finish 14th and 15th, shows Haas needs to change internally if they want to be a consistent point-scoring midfield team.

Just want to comment on that last point of a potential reserve role. Given that Mercedes went with George Russell over Stoffel Vandoorne to replace Lewis Hamilton for Sakhir, I could see them going for proven race winner Daniel Ricciardo if they need someone to substitute for a race even if Mick was to get a reserve role with them.

If you closely observed his performance since Austria, he actually outperformed Magnussen in most races. He just got f*ed over by the team or crashed into by others. There was lots that the scoring sheets alone don't show.

The thing is Mick beat Kevin 9 to 6 in race results when both finished. It is not like he was that much slower. But the peak perfomances were not high enoughwith MAG scoring 5 times (6 with the sprint) and Mick only 2 times

I think Haas effed up his pit strategies on purpose, just to have a reason to have him out of the team. Just remember how they kept him 5 laps on wets in Suzuka when the track was drying up and everyone switched to inters. And there were more mistakes on Haas side.
