This plane regardless of how accurate it is the first plane I really got into when I bought the sim. Always liked how stable and straightforward jt was in operation.

you may wanna tone it down on the power though. I never use full throttle for any portion of the flight. it WILL over torque your engine and, in real world, destroy it.
@TheFalconJetDriver
@TheFalconJetDriver 2 года назад
That would never happen with any of the MartinAire 208’s they are dead dog tired! I mean it would not torque out it would temp out first! 🤣🛫
@OhKnow379
@OhKnow379 Год назад
@@4OfSpades So is full throttle a purely emergency setting then? Why wouldn't there be some warning or limiter that prevents you from using full power unless you're in an emergency
@4OfSpades
@4OfSpades Год назад
@@OhKnow379 Hey man! Awesome question! So the PW PT6 is a completely Mechanical engine, it's not controlled by FADEC like some of todays modern-day jets or even some other modern prop planes. This is going to be a long one but, max takeoff power/thrust is completely based off of air density / temp. Where FADEC would control/monitor the engine temp/torques, the PT6 doesn't do that. The monitor is the pilot. Essentially, a physical limiter on the throttle wouldn't work because you may takeoff from an airport where the temp/density "limits" the engines torque to say 90%, however, 4 hours later, at the next airport you takeoff from, temp/density may limit your torque to 92% or 94%. It's always changing. So, a physical throttle stop wouldn't work. When determining your max takeoff thrust, it says not to exceed max torque or temp (whichever hits first), so you are bringing your throttle lever up slowly until either max allowed temp (ex 500deg) or max torque (ex 92%) is reached. Not only that, but the physical travel range of your throttle lever may not equal the same torque value depending on the air density. On a very low density day, I could bring my throttle lever to, for example, 80% of the travel range, resulting in a torque value of 85%. But the next day has a higher air density and, therefore, 80% travel of the throttle lever brings your engines torque to 85%, for example. FADEC on the other hand, digitally controls your engine, therefore your max power (different to thrust) is always going to be the end of the power levers travel. This is because FADEC will control your engine in order to never exceed that max torque or temp as it knows all the conditions it's currently flying in. YES, with the PT6 you can obviously push the throttle past your max allowed, and the POH covers the abnormal procedures in which you may need to do so. This, however, does mean you are exceeding the limits of the engine's normal operating range and risk wearing or damaging your engine faster.

@@4OfSpades Hey man thanks so much for an explanation, you're an absolute legend. It's either interesting that Cessna kept it mechanical but nonetheless very interesting. Have a good one!

One of the common mistakes I've seen people do when flying the 208 in MSFS is applying full throttle during takeoff. The engine wasn't designed to be operated that way as it over torques the engine as seen with the flashing red light during your takeoff. When you set your Take off power you need to observe the ITT and Ng are within their limits regardless of power setting. SteveO talked about this when he flew the 208 in one of his videos in the Bahamas. In the sim I noticed the power setting needs to be between 70%-80% to achieve take off torque but it may no longer be the case with this new mod as the performance numbers may have changed. However, there is a torque gauge beside the Altimeter below the MFD and a hack I did was I set the power until it hit T.O. so I don't necessarily have to think to much about the numbers. I'm not really sure if this is the right procedure but it does keep the torque within it's limits. I hope this helps.

Thanks for that info. Should the RPM lever be at max for takeoff or can you back it off somewhat before takeoff ? Should the RPM lever be at max for all landings or can you leave it backed off ? Thanks
@dinoe820
@dinoe820 2 года назад
@@kenbonner2316 I am no actual pilot so my knowledge is based off the lessons I took in ground school and information found throughout the Internet. When it comes to the prop lever standard operating procedure is max (full forward) during take off. This allows the prop to have maximum bite of the air for maximum performance. Same with landing as it gives you maximum bite from the prop in the event of a go-around. Depending on pilots some would reduce RPM during cruise climb and some would leave it at full RPM for maximum climb performance. Think of a car using low gears when climbing an incline and high gears when cruising the highway. Based off the 208's POH you can set the propeller between 1600-1900 RPM during enroute climb. However, what I normally do when sim'ing is just leave it at max RPM for maximum performance and reduce it when levelling off for cruise. I forgot where I picked up this piece of information but the main purpose of reducing prop angle/RPM is to reduce cabin noise (that's it) so it's more comfortable for the occupants especially during cruise; I may be wrong though.
@kev403
@kev403 2 года назад
@@dinoe820 you are correct.
@ScubyFlying
@ScubyFlying 2 года назад
@@dinoe820 Hi Dino! "Maximum bite" term is used when the prop angle of attack is larger, thus with "lower" RPM setting and not with high or max RPM ;). Max RPM is very tiny bites of air very quickly. Also, the primary function of RPM reduction is not to improve cabin noise, but rather reduce/optimize engine stress and fuel consumption in cruise, for an intended true airspeed at a given pressure altitude and outside air temp. i.e. The pilot plans his cruise portion in advance in accordance to the performance tables in POH, sets the torque and rpm as planned during cruise, and expects to get a particular EET/ETE (TAS) and endurance (FF) while saving on required engine maintenance (stress). You are correct though as per POH that max RPM in all conditions is 1900 RPM. The absolute max torque (at sea level) may only be set for max 30 seconds, however recommended procedure for take-off is to forward torque slowely until a max 1900 RPM is reached. At sea level in standard conditions this may mean that the physical position of the throttle lever is around 70%. At higher altitudes this may be 100% (and without even reaching max torque at some point) due to lower air density. But you'll almost never require max torque at altitude anyways unless perhaps its an emergency.

From a C-208 Blog - The Cutoff position cuts off all fuel to the engine fuel nozzles. The Low Idle position provides an RPM of 52% Ng. The High Idle position provides an RPM of 65% Ng. Low Idle is also known as Ground Idle and High Idle is also known as Flight Idle.
@kenbonner2316
@kenbonner2316 2 года назад
So should we use low idle for taxi and then switch to high idle prior to takeoff?
@khairulshiddiq9728
@khairulshiddiq9728 Год назад
@@kenbonner2316 low idle is used as pilot discretion, if the taxi is gonna be long sometimes the pilot uses low idle to conserve fuel, but if the ITT is the concern, the pilot prefers high idle to keep the engine below idle ITT. cmiiw

Woohoo, the 208! Having gotten my ppl several years ago in the 172, I became fairly comfortable flying it IRL & in MS flight sims. I recently decided it was time to move up in the flight sim world, the 208 being the next logical progression. airliners boggle my mind. In short, I’m looking forward to your 208 vids as I become more competent in the aircraft. a good tutorial might be of good use too. 😋

How can you review an airplane when you know nothing about it! I flew the 208 back when it was first introduced I am speaking of in the real world. I flew the 208 in the North East United States in the winter it was bear it would carry ice very well. You can also have the prop go into beta by pulling the power to idle and the airplane will drop out from under you. As for condition lever taxi in low idle (aft position) high idle for flight,

Condition lever function has been hosed by MS/Asobo. Used to be linked to the Mixture in the SDK, and now that MS has actually added condition levers to the sim, there is no way to bind controls to the condition lever...I would assume is any existing turbine aircraft. The lever has to be mouse-controlled for now, although Spad Next has a fix for now.
@shinkicker404
@shinkicker404 2 года назад
That is odd, because in the Kodiak I can use the condition lever with my controls, and I haven't changed any control binds. So I guess the devs linked it to the mixture somehow.
