Good update vid.! Thanx bro.! I've been carrying mine to work every day. I do hvac. It gets dirty fast. I've been using clorox wipes to clean mine. Squeeze some of the juices from the wipe into the knife & sling it out. & then I flush it out w/ oil. It's been working pretty good so far. I've been using the wipes to clean other knives for a few years now w/ no discoloration or anything. I was carrying a 940 for the past 5 years but for the past few months I've been carrying my ultratech, thanx to your encouragement & I'm finding it hard to carry any other knife now. Good looking out.
They're definitely hard use knives I use mine to do all kinds of stuff as a carpenter a good investment is to buy the driver bit for taking it apart. I wish they wouldn't use proprietary screws but it is what it is once youre able to disassemble it cleaning is alot easier
The manual says “ an occasional drop of REM oil into the pivot pin or choil area of the knife “ that said, while a gallon of oil directly into the knife won’t hurt it but it will definitely collect dust etc more rapidly.
@@theselfmadecollective7876 lol...I'm sitting here reading the directions for my new microtech otf wondering why it says this. Weird... anyway thanks dude. Your video is great
Mine is new, and misfires. Idk If it just needs oil or what. I keep it in my jacket as a concealed carry and I don't use it for work . I tried rem oil and it seems ok now , but They don't come with the tool to open it. Maybe they want you to stay out of it. My plans for my ultratech is self defense . It's a very nice and light otf
Ya I was hoping it was a break in thing. It hasn’t gotten any better after a couple weeks so I’ll send it in. At least from what Ives seen Microtech has a pretty good warranty
Do you happen to know if microtech touches up the body of the knife or is it just internals and the blade that get cleaned up etc. I love both my microtechs. LUDT and ultratech both amazing
I bought this knife and found that I had to use two hands to open it. I returned it to microtech and they said it was adjusted and sharpened. It was the same. A smartass at microtech told me maybe I wasn’t strong enough to use the knife. Worst purchase I’ve made.
Ya the ultra tech is a killer. I’d like to try the new gen 3 because the new switch in the scarab is so easy to use. But that’s just piss poor customer service
I just got the new mini Hera 2. It’s got the updated firing setup. It’s super smooth and easy. And what you were saying is exactly why I didn’t get the ultratech
So I just sent a ultratech back after a catastrophic failure it had been used as a duty knife for many years and for as much as it cost they said 3 months before I get it back it's kile I spent how much on it and now I have to go how long without it
why not just throw a knife into a can of oil 😂 I’ll tell you a secret for many - these knives should not work with oil. Oil attracts all dust and dirt. Anything inside that is oily will create a problem in the rubbing sliding mechanisms when dust and dirt adhere. Compressed air without through blowing is pointless - all the dirt inside will turn over, but will remain there.
@@ScotchNThings Cleaning these knives is simple - remove the glass breaker, take a brake disc cleaner and rinse everything thoroughly in 1 minute. That's it, no problem🤷♂️ things to do for a couple of minutes
You are not supposed to use any type of liquid lubricant on a microtech and the TRUE way to maintain their otf is to remove the glass breaker and simply blow it out with compressed air then if you absolutely have to lubricate it then powdered graphite is what you use... you're actually better off running dawn dishsoap and hot water through it than a liquid lubricant...
Weird, the user manual that came with my microtech, from the people that made my microtech and invented my microtech say to use liquid rem oil.... but what do they know?
@@nateb9346 that is hilarious, id love to see that actually because I used to work at microtech in bradford PA and any otf we got in for repairs was due to people using liquid lubricants and we decrease them blow them out properly how you are supposed too and then lube with fine graphite powder and they work 9 tines out of 10 but occasionally we would have a broken spring but I own quite a few microtech knives and none of directed me to use rem oil so maybe yours is special lol
@kevin auman it must be special, one out of a million! Bc i have my microtech manual in my hand as we speak and it says in the cleaning and maintenance section, to use an.. "occasional drop of rem oil". Lol. How about I post a video on my RU-vid showing you to prove you wrong 😂
Great video illustrating how phenomenal these knives are. Soaking with oil and spraying with air works in a pinch but honestly, spending the $7 on amazon or ebay for the bit to disassemble is the way to go. Take 15 min and a q-tip to clear out all the grime. Learn the spots to lightly lube and it will function better than new. Any other type of folder really needs similar maintenance a time or two a year. These are fun and practical edc tools, if you can clean a firearm, you can maintain these.
Id definitely recommend getting a bit to take it apart, 100% worth the investment, i used to build and install cabinets with my dad and it would get saw dust and shavings in it, and the ability to take it apart to deep clean is great
@@sprinkleddonuts6094 ive taken mine apart and cleaned it for the better half of 4 years, about 2 months ago the spring that fires it broke, I got it back from warranty with a new spring and no problem I think as long as you properly put it back together they don't care
@@sprinkleddonuts6094 I haven't done wood working in a couple months, now I work retail so it gets used to cut zip ties and tape, but when I'm home I open and close it when im bored, it definitely has more flicking time than use time, mostly lives in my pocket till I need it or I'm home. Still impressive after 4 years it olny just now needed a new spring. Usually around every 2 months or so, I oil it and I take it apart for a deep clean and sharpening whenever it needs it
@@G13-j3c I meant to say rem oil. Anyway, just got a brand new ultratech, and it is hard af to deploy, and retract. Sending it to Microtech to be looked at. I’ve had one before, and know it should not be that hard.
I found carrying OTF in your cargo pocket while working outside… Clipping it not just having it inside the pocket… the Flap closure keeps ALL the dirt and lint out of your knife vs front pocket carry. Edit: brother that is WAAAAAY TOO MUCH oil… just a few drops 😂 goes A Long way.
That’s definitely not how microtech recommends cleaning it…use the spray remoil and blast it in there, then take off the glass breaker and blow it out from the rear with air
If I wanna hold a tv remote I'll hit my lazyboy. Otf's are ugly, nonergonomic and pointless cause flipper tab knives still deploy faster out of pocket.
@ScotchNThings It takes a while to figure out what we really love. After awhile I found button or liner lock flipper tabs specifically with great ergos to be the pinnacle of pocket knives... for me.
I had the same thing happen to my UTX-85 lol. This guy at work just needed to cut a scouring pad in half so I handed him the knife, he put it right on the metal door and cut it. Cut through the paint on the door and all, all I could do is sit there and watch and tell myself that was the last time I hand anyone my knife again 😅. He ended up getting his own and I bet he won't do that to his 😂.
I gota ask Iv had mine for almost a year and a half and it’s. Pocket knife for me but the past couple of days it hasn’t Ben locking wen it’s out so it looks busted and won’t close unless I push it back any ideas what I should do???
My bro-in-law bought a MT OTF some years back and I was instantly smitten. I bought a Combat Troodon. That started my mild knife addiction. I am probably up to a dozen knives now from my OG Buck 110. My current desk knife is an Olitans 024 (boxes and food) and my EDC is a weird gravity knife Paragon Warlock which has issues better covered elsewhere. My Troodon is currently guarding the interior of my safe. I have settled on a folder as the best knife out there, pb washers, thumb studs and a frame lock is just plain bulletproof. But as a semi knife nut, gotta have weird stuff like the OTF and my gravity knife to name but a few. Tis part of the fun.
Ya I learned that a otf is a capable and fun knife but maybe not suited for real dirty conditions. I’ve got a CT now also and like to bring it out from time to time. Stuff that goes to the job site with me are all pb washer knives.
Knife collectors be like: REEEEEEEEEEEEEEE I love my Utratech but I use a Boker Kalashnikov $42.95 instead of my $300 Miocrotech as a EDC heavy use knife.
Ɽevenant ya I am glad I went over the edge and used the Microtech last year. It helped me get use to using a more expensive knife and not worrying about scratching them up.
The way I’ve seen grain bins being built was mind blowing. They were just attaching rings at the bottom and just jacking the whole thing up and attaching more. Is that the shit you do?
To clean mine I use zippo lighter fluid.Fill up the knife and turn it over with the blade deployed stick it in a 2x4 to drain out/dry up. Then I spray Rem oil in mine.Does a great job of making it work like new.Do this as needed.
Oiled mine, then it started seizing up. Was freaked out, just filled it up with zippo and it's firing better than new. Crazy stuff, definitely gonna start keeping some zippo on hand. Picking up some rem tomorrow.
They hold up really well. There aren’t many cases in life where somethings so elegant also performers. This is one of those that is both gorgeous and will fights back.
I put benchmade blue lube in mine and it made it super sticky it would deploy or retract at all but then I sprayed some "shooter lube stage one solvent" and let it sit for about 30 seconds and it fired like brand new. I'm assuming the solvent broke up all the gunk in it and freed everything up.
Why these are illegal in some places is beyond me. My ultratech is the safest knife I own; I never have to touch the blade in normal use. And I have conventional knives that I can deploy 10x faster, so that can't be it either. (See the "Emerson wave"; but don't tell the politicians)
That serrated edge is no joke. I was impressed with it the first time I used it. Edit: I have the Makora version as well , it's got holes in the bottom the handle , so you can blow it out from where the glass breaker is. Originally intended for use in the water.
Have you ever sharpened a microtech on a whetstone? I’ve never liked otf knives but I’m interested in giving them another shot. I just wouldn’t want to send it in every time it needs a sharpening.
Bought Benchmade's Guided Field Sharpener( worksharp). Hands down for the money the best knife sharpener I have used. The ceramic rod on sharpener is perfect to bring the edge back damn near to factory while not damaging the blade profile which would jeopardize your warranty IMO. Will continue to touch up with ceramic rod until I need to send it off. The built in 20° angles on sharpener work extremely well for other knives. Highly recommend it to anyone.
@@bftoler I use my base model WorkSharp with the triangle stones/rods a lot. I have a fixed angle fancy sharpener but it takes more time for setup and actual sharpening but excels when you want an odd angle or want a beauty mirrored edge. . The worksharp gets shit done fast for a work knife. I only recently drug my new leather strop out of storage and it will fix those rolled edges quick with no loss of metal.
I'm not from the US but a friend of min can get me one, the question is, do i need to send the knife to Microtech factory on a regular basis to clean it as i heared? If so, it would be impossible to me then! Thanks for the vis though, it's very informative!
Just take it apart, they are a simple device! Does opening a Microtech void the warranty? "We understand that some customers may prefer to maintain their own knives. Sharpening your knife does not automatically void the warranty. The warranty will remain in effect so long as the blade is not improperly sharpened and the handle is not damaged or stripped due to disassembly, determined at our discretion. Sep 7, 2020" MICROTECH
I would. I can’t remember what I put in at first but it really gummed it up. So I had to go buy rem oil. My brother uses the oil that comes in his beard trimmer and swears by it.
Ya I thought it would be like having 2 knives in one. The only downside I found was for super hard use I couldn’t get my thumb on the spine for really hard cuts.
@@ScotchNThings I just want to know one thing how do you sharpen it ?? Please tell me please 🙏 do u send it back in to MT or do you sharpen it and how long can u go before it needs to be sharpened?? I really appreciate u replying back
@@ScotchNThings WOW that’s impressive specially for a dagger every dagger I’ve got never came sharp to begin with I got the benchmade scop dagger and one from fox and they was both dull and very hard to sharpen but they say that new work sharp Precision with the clamp system can sharpen this knife, I’m going to buy it just based on your videos alone I’ve watched them all but your the only one on here that actually uses there’s and is not chicken s**** to get it dirty, so much thanks for for your time and videos there much appreciated bro
When you are blowing the air into the end of the knife, where does any of the dust or debris exit? Or does it? Seemed like nothing was coming out the end. And, that was a lot of oil. And Microtech suggests pouring that much oil into the end of the knife opening like that????? Thanks for the video though. Still trying to decide which model I am wanting to go with - the UTX85 or the Ultratech. Stay safe!
Ya that’s how they suggest to clean it. It seems to work pretty good. After dum that much oil in I let it sit upside down over night to let the excess drain out.
@@ScotchNThings I saw a video where Josh from Microtech in their Microtech knife cleaning video recommends blowing the oil out with the compressed air afterwards. That may be a good help too.
I take the glass breaker off, blow compressed air in the back end, flush it with spray Remoil, then blow it out again from the back end. A 9/32 6pt socket works for the glass breaker. I flip my clip lefty so it comes off when I first get the knife anyway.
@@delav83 Stropping, probably not. Touching up the edge, I don’t know, but I can speculate. I guess it’s technically sharpening but if you can’t tell it’s been touched up by looking at it, that might fly under the radar. Now that I think about... Imagine them opening a package sent in for legit warranty work, but they notice it’s been sharpened so they toss it back in the bag and send it back. That would be ridiculous, but who knows. 🤷♂️
Tell me about it. My brother in law wanted to see my auto socom elite. I showed him how to open it and told him to hang on tight. He still dropped it and put some scratches on it. Thankfully the blade was ok.
I’ll never lend my Ultratech to anyone except for my father and my closest friend. They both know how to treat someone else’s things with respect. Anyone else can borrow my Benchmade Mini Adamas. Folder with a very overbuilt blade. You would have to actively try to damage it to cause any real issues.
My slider for the blade keeps getting dirty after I slide it 5-10 times after I clean it. I sprayed the inside of the knife with Breakfree CLP, let it sit for a few mins, opened and closed the blade a few times then sprayed it out and let the knife sit upside down on a towel overnight. Didn’t use any oil or anything. Any suggestions?
Ya I’m liking how it looks. It makes it mine. And the rem oil works great. Also my brother uses the oil that comes with beard trimmers and he swears by it.
If you buy a Cobratech OTF you wouldn't have to worry about voiding your warranty opening it up to clean it is 5min top & doesn't effect there lifetime warranty.. Microtech=Over priced Junk.
