How ironic that in the end the holy rosy herself “BEV” was a coward. She could not face the end with dignity and faith. Everyone was singing or praying and she was digging a hole to escape the consequences of her choices. Classic !

I love how Erin clips the wings of the 'angel' as a nod to the moment when she had to clip the wings of the doves because her mother said to. Doves are also a religious symbol

I thought one of the major themes in this show was the idea of a wolf in sheep clothing. In the final episode Paul even refers to them as wolves. Also the idea that religion can so easily be manipulated, Bev is constantly reciting bible verses and popular religious quotes to support whatever conclusion she believes to be right. In that way religion too can be seen as a wolf in sheep’s clothing if misinterpreted.

The scene where Hassan prays for the last time with his son and falls down in his prayer and dies and his son place his hands over his dad's head comforting, while he burns away. Toke my breath away! It hit me Sooo hard!

I think my favorite dialogue from the series was at the end of episode 6: Bev (To Erin): "You could shoot me right now. It would mean I'm only five minutes behind-" *Erin shoots her* Erin (to the group of survivors): "we have five minutes." Lmao 😂😂

to the people who wonder why Riley killed himself: he ultimately killed himself for a few reasons. in the show, Riley is most known for his guilt and his past alcoholism. He hadn't had a drink in years and his version of recovery was seeing his addiction as separate from himself so he could isolate it and control it. The guilt, on the other hand, was consuming him. You can see, from the moment that Paul tells him the truth of being turned and when Riley nearly rips Bev's throat out (she would've deserved it 🤷🏻), he understands that he has to kill himself. Because to him, this is his addiction. Becoming a vampire where he would be unable to control his thirst would be his absolute worst nightmare, his personal hell. Losing control of himself was so frightening and repulsive that he would rather die. He also couldn't live with his guilt forever and he would have as a vampire. He would have lived forever consumed by his guilt and only watching it get worse as he was unable to control his thirst. He saw a future where he would be in misery, where he has the very large potential to kill the people he loves, and decided that being dead was better than that. in a way, his suicide was holy.

For me it's the moment between Eddie and Annie. When they confirm that free will is still theirs and others are killing because they want to. That, and Hassan and Ali on the beach.

Riley’s end was the most beautiful and frightening things I’ve ever seen. The acting in this series was amazing.

on behalf of all Muslims, thank you Mike Flanagan for not disrespecting or putting Islam down the way we are used to Hollywood doing it. I loved when Bev called Omar a terrorist as he literally saved the world lol. I am a huge fan of Mikes and cannot wait to see what he does next

Mike Flanagan and Robert Eggers are completely redefining the "horror" genre, in my opinion. Mike says "yeah it's a vampire story, but in the meantime I'm gonna talk about coping with guilt, the consequences of fanaticism, trauma, the afterlife, and of course alcoholism." The part that absolutely broke me to tears was when Leeza confronted Joe, and then after, how Joe spoke at the AA meeting. That stuff just really hit home to me.

This show has a lot to unpack, for me personally. It's a sensitive topic but I think the show tackled religion quite well. It's especially interesting to me how the priest didn't feel any guilt for the death he caused, using faith to absolve himself. While Riley, refusing God, carries the burden himself right to the very end.

Mike Flanagan secured his spot on my list of favorite writer/directors. His ability to tell stories, especially horror, in a limited series format is unmatched. The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass are some of the best installments to the horror genre I genuinely can’t wait to see what he does next

As a Christian, I absolutely love the portrayal of Bev. She’s your typical “holier than thou” Bible thumper who thinks she’s better because she served the church and etc, and believe me there are plenty of people who are like that the even the Bible has warned us about. The lesson the show presents such as the dogma of religion, not just Christianity/Catholicism specifically, is inherently evil and wrong, and that the religious figure tied to a religion would never endorse the lengths Bev made. Just goes to show that religion itself can easily be distorted and used for something sinister rather than to save people from themselves and damnation. Muslim, Buddhist, atheist or Christian, we’re all imperfect human beings who are just trying to be better people.

when the sheriff decided to leave with his son and the devil popped out in the church with his robe was some of the scariest stuff ive seen , especiall having him walk the isle and everyine being pressured to drink the poison. Really taught me in times we need to be brave to stand out from the crowd when evryone is doing wrong we need to be brave and do whats right.

I like how they never showed Ali taking communion after his dad forbade him from doing so, so when Ali drinks the poison we weren’t sure whether he’d come back to life, but when he did it confirmed he’d disobeyed his father

Favorite parts of this series: -Hamish Linklater’s performance as Father Paul. Absolutely mesmerizing. -Bev clawing and digging into the sand trying to hide from her fate -Erin’s monologue about what she thinks happened to her baby. -the sudden silence at the end when everyone who was singing caught fire -the silent credits at the end except for the sound of water lapping against the rowboat -Joe Collier and Leeza’s scene where she forgives him -Riley’s death and him saying that he loved Erin and did his best.

I like the abrupt silence when they were singing . Its mirrors how abrupt facing death can be. Its the same tactic infinity war did after they got snapped. The silence doesn't distract you from the horror and allows it to sink in. We're forced to hear our own thoughts

This show was so great. The moment at the end when Erin combined her belief of the afterlife with Riley's made me cry so much. It was an absolutely beautiful interpretation of the inevitability a death but also the comfort of returning to where we all come from

I find the sheriff's and his kid's death so touching. Earlier the sheriff said his wife prayed all the way to the end of her live, through her entire illness she did not lose faith, thus him being so hurt that Ali wanted to attend the Catholic church and stopped praying with him( as well as the fact that he was doing that giving in on the brainwashing adoctrination that Bev was pushing in the school). They both prayed all the way to the end, the sheriff gave in on his wounds mid prayer and Ali simply watched the sun come out one last time. One besides the other. Together. I'm a raging atheist, but i see the appeal of religion for so people. The feeling of something major, something being orchestrated by a higher power can be calming for some people despite not believing the entire lore thing. The sheriff himself said he was not particularly religious, he was Muslim because of his wife and kind of carried it with him after her death as a way of reminiscing her or maybe because he ended up growing into it. It made him feel some kind of way, it could either be spiritual or personal but he did not leave religion aside. The simple act of praying, meditating, is a very internal and personal thing. Those two doing it together as the last thing they would ever do joins them in a bond attached to the late mother of the kid. I was already crying at that point but it absolutely shattered me.

My favorite performance was from the actress who played Beverly Keane. She played the perfect religious zealot.

😭😭😭 Riley's death scene was so BEAUTIFUL! The young teen he killed was waiting with forgiveness at the end and omg I'm crying again!

No one in the show said Vampire once...or was smart enough to say.. Looks mate, that's a demonic creature not an angel 😂 But I will say one thing.. The dead woman (ghost - vision) from the car crash with the broken shards of glass embedded all over her face while the siren lights flickering on the pieces of glass.. Is probably one of the most beautiful - disturbing - freakiest things I've ever seen!

I've not seen anyone else mention this but I noticed a lot of the characters said 'I did my best' and it hit me hard because, as adults, we're all thinking we're doing our best but sometimes it's either not good enough or it's just completely wrong. Also, at the end of it all, does it matter? We do our best and then return to dust. It's just a line that got me pondering.

The ending is an interesting mix of the Judeo-Christian-Islamic religion (Erin sacrifices herself; good triumphs over evil) plus Taoist (Erin's monologue about self being an illusion) plus Buddhist (true salvation is to die with peace and acceptance, which everyone on the island except Bev did).

I have a personal theory : the death of the priest Pruitt in his office. Some say it was due to an overconcentration of the demon's blood in his body. But he died spitting a bloody foam, just like the dog that was poisonned. So I think it was Bev who poisoned him. Episode 3 she saw the picture of him younger and seemed to realize who he is. Later, we see her putting a box of poison back in the closet, without knowing what she did with it. We also see her filling the priest's fridge with food she prepared. I think she wanted to test the miracle she understood of the priest being the Chosen One.

Midnight mass requires a patient listening and the watcher will be rewarded with a show that is both entertaining and enlightening.

Erin's monologue at the end made me cry so hard.. as an agnostic I struggle with the religious subjects Mike tackles in Midnight Mass.. I found her monologue just amazing and eye opening

😭😭😭I cried for the whole last episode, especially when Erin gave her final thought about life and that she only sees the truth about it only when she's about to die😔😔

Riley’s monologue (and Erin’s final one) about death really hit home for me as an atheist. They perfectly described how I feel about what happens when we die, but I’ve never been able to put it that eloquently. You don’t need a god or religion to see our existence as beautiful or purposeful.

Beverly FUCKING Kean is the real villain. Loved the series! Had some powerful scenes, great dialog\acting and well executed jump scares. I usually fine jump scares to be a really cheap overused tactic but Mike Flanagan executed them to perfection!

I thought the show was a metaphor for addiction. Riley was an alcoholic and killed a girl in an accident, and she (his guilty conscience) always follows him and is a constant reminder of his past. When Pruitt converts him, he feels that same “thirst” he had when he was an alcoholic and that’s why he was so against this whole vampire cult thing and eventually sacrificed himself for the safety of others. At the end when some of the towns people claimed to be unable to stop themselves from killing their family or friends, that’s their addiction taking hold of them. While others, like Ali and Riley’s parents, abstained from killing because they knew it was wrong and that they didn’t need to kill (even though they still feel that painful thirst). At the beginning they all looked down at Riley for killing that girl in a drunk driving incident, but at the end they all felt that same aching feeling of their addiction.

The convo between Erin and Riley at the end made me start bawling on my couch

Easily one of the best shows I've ever seen, the ending is haunting and beautiful.

Really liked how this show both deconstructed and reinforced religion in general. It’s a beautiful critique of our own faith and an apt caution to the dangers of over zealotry and religious pride.

So many have complained about the many monologues, but I find them really well done and pretty insightful, and possibly containing some important “life lessons”. Definitely not boring to me at all.

Wings, fangs, feeds on blood, burn up in the sunlight….yeah my first thought would have definitely been angel.

I think about the final line: ‘I can’t feel my legs.’ The doctor was talking about EPP and other possible contagions. She mentioned that our bodies would eventually heal itself or ‘clean’ those infected blood cells to go back to normal. Maybe since she had not taken “communion” the Angel blood wore off? Also, in some of the older vampire movies if you killed the ‘master’ then everyone goes back to normal. Could this be right??

This show is a masterpiece and nobody can change my mind

I saw those solo cups and immediately thought of Jonestown. Charismatic preacher + solo cups + sociopathic supporters = Bad News

It was pretty obvious what was going to happen in regards to certain people de-aging, just based on the glaringly obvious aging makeup on the elder Pruitt and some of the other residents. Other than that, this series was damn near perfect, for me. Really enjoyed it. Also, props for getting through that medocal pronunciation. That one is a mouthful!

Same - watched in one day! At first I thought "oh no, not another vampire story" but the way they intertwined with religion and spirituality was an interesting take. Having people revert back to their "best" selves was interesting since Bev didn't really change - that makes her best self who she already was in the present? Scary.

When Leeza lost feelings to her legs, I took that to mean the demon died. Aside - the end scene of ep 5 reminds me so much of the end scene of Saint Maud, but longer and more definitive.

I was honestly shocked when Riley takes Erin out on the boat, like I was shocked in that bit when he walked in on them making the communion wine but this episode kind of stunned me because I just expected things to go a certain way and then they didn't lol. But kudos to Mike Flanagan, he did such a good job (as did all the actors)

My goodness, the comments! Yes! Yes! Yes! ALL of these observations and more are so so good! I absolutely BAWLED my eyes out at the ending. It was gut wrenching, sad, but so beautiful all at once. This series was a mirror to every religious person, everyone raised in the church, everyone questioning their beliefs, everyone who's been hurt by religious people, yet still has a love for God and/or a strong affinity for some people still in the religious community. It tackles all of that while remaining true and respectful to people's beliefs, not just a caricature. Well done, Mike Flanagan! Well done!

This was so intriguing and beautifully done. I’m a Christian but found this to touch on these topics expertly and really make one think. The vampire “Angel” was as strangely beautiful as he was horrifying. It’s such a cool and interesting concept. They kinda left it open for a possible 2nd series but it’s great as a stand alone too!

This whole series just showed the power of indoctrination. people can be swayed into believing just about anything.. now this show had a 10 foot tall vampire performing miracles but even without if you look at the personal stories you see it wasn't simply the magical vampire blood that swayed them it was the promise of purpose, redemption, After-life.. all these people were seeking something and the 10 foot tall vampire was selling a cure. people will say this is none-sense no one would think a vampire was an angel but think about it if you were there and watched a little girl bound to a wheel-chair stand up and walk.. would you believe it was the work of a God or the devil.

If Mike Flanagan makes a movie with Pixar, I'm gonna be crying for a week.

This is why a limited series is the perfect storytelling format and closer to novels. Characters are fully fleshed out. Character motivations are thoroughly explored. Subplots are developed and provide the foundation for the main plot. The story is given time to build so the climax and conclusion is powerful and satisfying. This is why a hack like J.J. Abrams and his post modern “mystery box” theory of storytelling fails every time.

This was a really well-done synopsis for a series that tackles so many deep questions. I enjoyed the long scenes at the AA meetings, when characters explored religious questions that have been asked for centuries. I appreciated that the priest was earnestly answering the theological questions with considered responses. For that, I would like to see this get an Emmy nom for writing. It's definitely a slow-burn, and I was tempted to abandon it by the middle of Episode Two, but the "talkiness" of it drew me in, and, I didn't miss the lack of physical action so much, because I was being drawn into the lives of the people on this island.

Mike Flanagan’s work is just something else, the way he writes beautifully but also really shows the story and lets us interpret it works so well! seeing old cast members and his wife in a new story again was a great bonus too 🥺

I think another major theme is that true divinity or grace lies in genuine love for others and for ourselves. It is only when we fail to love that we fail to act in a godly manner, as seen with Bev who was, ironically, the most godless character in the entire show.

I don’t find vampire stories scary but still this was good because the real horror came from Beverly with her hypocrisy and bigotry. I can’t wait for the Haunting of Thornfield Hall!

Mike Flanagan's emotionally focused horror is always potent. I wasn't brought to tears by Midnight Mass, and I was mostly frustrated with the characters who I found unlikeable. This isn't exactly a criticism, they are well written and beautifully acted. I just didn't connect with them. However, The Haunting of Hill House touched my heart in ways I can never explain because I lost an immediate family member to suicide and can empathize with every member of the family. In this way, I can see how Midnight Mass could really emotionally connect with someone who has faced similar challenges and traumas in life. Top shelf psychological horror!

Midnight Mass is one of the best "Horror" series in years. It is intelligent, gripping, well made and got me crying, cheering and thinking. The mysticism and theology put forward creates a thought provoking show. Father Paul played by Hamish Linklater is one of the most charismatic actors i have witnessed in a long time. In fact the whole cast was magnificent. There were times when i felt turmoil in the tummy from the expectations of what was to come. Questions brought forward on life and religious imagery made this series one that stands out among thousands of bad horror and bad theological films. I agree with you that Leeza not feeling her legs as the last scene means that the angel/demon has in fact died. Lets hope so any way. Enjoyed your explainations and thoughts, thank you.

As an atheist, I personally loved Midnight Mass since it covered a few different religions (and lack of religion) and didn't treat any of them as particularly good or bad, the same with the believers. Riley wasn't anything like atheist stereotypes and was respectful to his Catholic family, the Muslim sheriff was a good man who just wanted to help, even if he highly disagreed with his son temporarily converting to Catholicism, and it does an excellent job at showing the good and bad sides of devout faith in general. All that and the very well done storytelling made it a really enjoyable watch for me.

I’m just so glad they didn’t have her baby be the anti-Christ or Christ himself.

This show was so unexpectedly good. I thought I was clicking on a movie and was surprised to see it was a series, one that sucked me in for an entire day as well. There were several scenes that had me feeling all sorts of emotions, but none made me as sad as hearing Riley talk about what happens when he dies. I'm still thinking about this show all day. There certainly was A LOT to unpack. It just maybe that this is one of those shows you can watch over again and notice new things you might have missed before. Thanks for posting this video.

I absolutely loved this show. Erin, Paul/John, Hassan, Leeza, and Riley all had moments that will stay with me for a while.

Loved this series. It was a familiar, yet uniquely presented, concept. I thought it was slow at times, but the pace was necessary for exposition and for mood. I loved how the Monsignor wasn’t evil, at least in the beginning. He was misguided, for sure, but his understanding of what had happened was because of his faith. If he had been the stereotypical “evil or possessed” priest, it would’ve been a much more shallow piece. I loved this show.

I LOVED this miniseries; blew off a lot of work today to binge all of the episodes. This video referenced my two favorite scenes in the series. I connected the dots about Riley and his dreams almost the second I realized he had been turned, so I knew the broad strokes of what was coming on the boat and why, but I was genuinely shocked at how affecting I found that scene where Riley died in a state of grace. Whether because he forgave himself or because his victim forgave him or god itself granted him peace, that was an extremely beautiful moment, followed immediately by the scene I didn't anticipate with Erin screaming in horror and grief right into the credits. Very powerful. And then there was her last soliloquy about life and the universe and how we are all the universe dreaming of life, which was one of the most amazing speeches about death that I've heard in a long time. I'm very grateful they will never make another Midnight Mass, and I frankly hope they don't making any more hauntings because each of these stories Mr. Flanagan is making are such incredible gems that use horror genre to explore the human condition in such unique ways. They shouldn't be cheapened by reproductions.

I just finished this, and it was intense. Listening to Erins speech had me ugly crying. It reminded me very much of Ed Elrics revelation on the island hes left on, “One is all, and all is one.” He understood what that meant and I felt like Erin understood that as well in that moment.

This was an AMAZING show! Very different from Hill House/Bly Manor but still just as good, if not better. The acting on this show was incredible from top to bottom. Hamish Linklater, who played Father Paul gave perhaps the best performance I have ever seen on a TV show. Hopefully the acting, writing, and directing on this show is given the recognition it deserved and not dismissed because it is "horror"

It's amazing how flanagan could bring faith and religion issue into his works in a way that no one can't really offended. It's fair and in the end, i find my faith stronger than ever.

She had some things to say about how she wasn’t her memory. For me, though, the show was still about memory. It was about legacy. How we remember others, how they’d want to remembered, and how we want to be remembered. It was much more than what it appeared, much more than something about vampirism. Mike Flanagan’s films and shows are always quite deep.

I loved your analysis!! There was so much you mentioned that I didn’t notice. I really resonated with the purpose aspect and the master hand bringing everyone back to the town. No one knows why we are truly here but I feel as if everything does have a reason, and it was interesting to think about the domino effect such as the series suggested.

Father Paul and Bev Keanne were so good, super possessed. The scene of that Vampire appearing in the Church as also good. I don't think they ever confirmed if the Vampire made it away from the sunrise, seeing that it was able to still fly. This has got to be one of the better horror series in a while.

Every time I start a new series and finish it, I am overly filled with joy when I find out Think Story has an “Ending Explained” on it. This is how I like to end any film or series and will not feel complete if there isn’t one.

Like seriously dang. I think the monsignor was always adled by dementia how the frik did he not realize that was a frikkin vampire? And the stations of the cross turned vampiric resurrection story yikes I'm too shaken right now

I was so moved by the speech at the end, I stayed up all night. What a magnificent series, I am in awe of it. Disgusting that the actor of Monsignor Pruitt didn’t win an Emmy!

When Liza says “I can’t feel my legs” and smiles, I interpreted that as another strong theme in this show: mortality is good and beautiful. Living forever requires becoming a monster and dying, returning to dust, feeding new life, that’s beautiful. The finite time we get on earth with our loved ones is all the more precious because it ends. This show was a love story for our mortality.

For some reason, throughout the entire show i loved the preacher. I don’t know if it was his acting, his character or a mix of both. I’m glad his ending was more gentle and he could be with his lady.

I started by watching your AHS breakdowns(best ones on YT rn) and I was searching for a “midnight mass” from anyone but when I saw your handled I dead prayed like yes Jesus lol 😂 I needed HIM specifically to tell me this everyone else makes my head hurt 😞😂😂 so again thank u for adding humor and Easter eggs and keeping true to classic horror by not just saying everything sucks ! Kate Siegel, or “Erin Greene” in Midnight Mass, also starred in Hush. I recently watched that movie and the book that her deaf character is writing is called “Midnight Mass”.. Is this a coincidence or am I missing something here??
