The Uluru Statement From The Heart was written by more than 250 delegates from all over Australia gathered at Uluru, Northern Territory, on the lands of the Anangu people, at the First Nations National Constitutional Convention in 2017. After centuries of struggle for recognition and justice, the statement calls for the establishment of a ‘First Nations Voice’ enshrined in the Australian Constitution and the establishment of a ‘Makarrata Commission’ to supervise agreement-making and truth-telling between governments and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. First Nation - Lyrics
First nation first nation
First to deserve an explanation
First nation first nation
Last to receive an invitation
First nation first nation
When we gonna start the conversation?
When we gonna start the celebration?
When we gonna end the exploitation?
When we gonna say the word invasion?
Out loud
We’re waiting
Still waiting
Nation within a nation
Nation within a nation
Earth black the church lacked the first fact
80 thou turned demon days and a dirt nap
Generate the trauma that made a kid rage
Now the ment’ capat be filled with all that
Fall back
Why my cousin commit?
Why my uncle locked up?
Why my aunty forget, how to put a glass cup down?
Fighting the fit
We done been brainwashed into fighting the temptay
Fought Armageddon and I be out the next day
Of course I’m a get em till the spirit run empty
My corpse full of venom outcome of the invade
How dare you try to put me up in grave
Strong vision
Tradition
No ticket no admission
No government indecision
No token recognition
First nation, so ancient
Let’s sit down and talk about appropriation
Let’s sit down and talk about compensation
Let’s sit down and talk about reconciliation
Out loud
We’re waiting
Still waiting
Nation within a nation
Still waiting
Nation within a nation
Nation
Nation within a nation
When will the light switch
24/7 in a crisis
White noise killed black thoughts
I sense
theres a shift, it’l come by the nights end
When will the light switch
24/7 in a crisis
White noise killed black thoughts
I sense
theres a shift, see the ship sink like this

@@Skiptondesigns Skip, I have been a fan of Midnight Oil for 30+ years. My very first concert was seeing them on the Blue Sky Mining tour. Perhaps the reason they are still singing politically themed songs is that NOTHING'S fecking changed!! Maybe had we listened to Midnight Oil 30 years ago...and yes, "Power & the Passion" is an excellent song...and made the needed changes to our societies, they wouldn't have to keep making political songs. They could write about surfing, or how we already solved the Climate Crisis, or how we've restored things in regards to First Nations people, a truly post-colonial world, etc.

This song has been in my head ever since I first heard it, its epic, haunting with Jessicas great vocal ! Tasmans poetic rap, and Petes passion ! what ever mistakes we have made in the past lets respect the Aboriginal elders and this great land. When Cooks officers stole sacred sea turtles the aboriginals were the first to offer a peacefull negotiation. Let them control national parks etc because we obviously cant and once our nature is destroyed it wont come back. buy the album people and vote with your wallet !

Midnight Oil - Makarrata Project We’re damned lucky to have this band back. Almost 20 years after their last album, Midnight Oil deliver a vastly diverse collection of songs and possibly their most important musical statement in four decades. Harking back to the sheer explosive power and passion found on songs such as Back on the Borderline from 1981’s Head Injuries, Gadigal Land punches hard and tough from the opening blasts, Peter Garrett snarling, with Dan Sultan and Mirning elder Bunna Lawrie firmly in his corner. First Nation, with guest vocals from Jessica Mauboy and Tasman Keith, is equally brimming with rage, but has the Oils’ typically rock-solid beat keeping the message on track and fists in the air. Change the Date shifts the tempo considerably and comes with a previously unreleased vocal track by late singer and multi-instrumentalist Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, while Terror Australia has rising star Alice Skye singing solo with only piano accompaniment. Like the musical predecessor Diesel and Dust from 1987, the Makarrata Project centres its thematic overtones on the issues of the Indigenous peoples of Australia and the relationships and attitudes between and towards them and white people. Using the 2017 Uluru Statement from the Heart as the lynchpin here, the Oils have used the mini-album as a vehicle of collaboration with several Indigenous artists, for as surely as the raising of awareness is a key point so too must be the show of solidarity and cooperation and for the most part they make good on the delivery. The Makarrata Project is a rich, powerful and timely reminder that the foundations of the wide country we all inhabit go back far, far longer than the first settlers back in the 1700’s. The beauty and diversity and the meaning of what these songs contain deserves to be heard not only by every Australian but by all those who truly do believe that together there is how for a better future. While i’ve no doubt this album will album polarise some fans, those who are seeking a collection of ‘proper’ Oils songs may feel somewhat let down, but as the band have stated this is a collaborative project designed to shed light on an important set of issues and if even those few who truly do understand the premise of it spread the word, well then that’s hope enough for the future for me. Love the voice Oils give to so many issues and the truth they bare but most importantly is the voices of First Nations Peoples. These lyrics are so raw, real and contemporary. We have a long way to go toward truth-telling and giving back power and autonomy that was stolen.

Did I hear Jessica Mauboy sing the 3-note Doctor Who hook at 4:32? Between Jim's synths and that bass line, it sounds right at home.

Still got it, this song and Gadigal Land show it, I'm so hyped for the album, and really like the more experimental, Red Sails feel to this song. Always loved 10,9,8 and Red Sails the best, every song from them is 100% a banger. Hyped for the future, something to look forward to haha.
