What people forget about is these WWII veterans who survived battles such as these returned home after the war and went back working their regular 9 to 5 jobs as teachers, bankers, mechanics, etc...
Meanwhile the WWI veterans were left jobless from the Great Depression and when they marched on Washington DC, McArthur sent Patton to conduct a tank assault on them in 1932.
Few people realize that these scenes were actually intended for, but cut from, the movie "The Little Mermaid". That's why this clip is called "Arial Attack".
I know… Today is a fire and forget world and now remote Drone strikes… Warfare has evolved at a shockingly rapid pace. Too bad humans are at their Best when they are doing their worst
Except Japanese AA over the carriers wasnt that thick. Japanese Carrier AA was weak and relied heavily on Air Power as well as picket ships which werent that close.
Not everything is manual during WW2, example such as German Flak battery are using Fire Control system that adjust the consistency of their barrage into Allied bombers.
What I really love about the bombing runs in this movie is the soundtrack. The sound track mimics the sound of the planes' propellers while flying or diving down at their target.
I know… That eerie sound effect as they are diving in really intensified the scenes. It’s very simple yet had a huge impact. The soundtrack is really good
While the Anti Aircraft is exaggerated here. Both in volume & number of hits. In real life Americans actually only lost one plane to Japane Anti Aircraft during the battle.
Imagine all the luck of dodging all that flak and then hitting the ship with a standard US Dud torpedo. They finally fixed the firing mechanism in 1943...
I appreciate the fact that they don’t sugar coat the details of the battle to make american’s feel good. Most of the dive bombers missed their targets. It was a few lucky hits that won the day.
From the documentaries I’ve seen… The crew of the enterprise did comment heavily about how much luck played a role that day. Many were shocked that they never got hit. These were very honorable man, they did not exaggerate their tails… They were happy to make it out alive. I also appreciated how they didn’t bash the Japanese on this… They actually portrayed them in a rather positive light except for the one commander who is quite arrogant but I think the actor played the role quite good. Arrogance is a high trait in Japanese culture
@Stesilaus They didn't necessarily sacrifices themselves. The Japanese went after the first sight of American planes and go after it. What I did know was that what the Americans would do is they would launch the attack groups at the same time, so the Japanese would only focus on one group instead of attacking the other. Keep in mind that the torpedo bombers reached their targets first before the dive bombers which explained it.
@Stesilaus Read the book "shattered sword" from parshall and tully to have an almost definite answer about this. The torpedo planes did not really lure the cap (at least not the first 2 squadrons), they prevented the whole japanese fleet from emptying their decks and launching their attack which would have surely sent yorktown and maybe another ship to the bottom in the morning, moreover, the combined attack of yorktown and enterprise planes (which is not explained not told in the movie) did saturate the cap by presenting a simultaneous attack coming from different directions to an overburdened japanese air patrol which wasn't coordinated by radio nor had any radars to give some advance warnings. If the torpedo squadrons which sacrificed themselves had not showed up, the 10h20 morning attack may not have destroyed 3 carriers but merely damage them (even if heavily) or just put them out of the battle like the Shokaky at the battle of the coral sea. And of course the odds of 3 to 1 which the japanese faced in the afternoon would not have happened. The US navy had both a strategic advantage, more planes and luck on their side, but the japanese complacency before the battle also ensured they could not go out of that battle unscathed.
Exactly.... those guys had some fucking nerve to be going straight at a Target with everyone on the ship trying to kill you. Makes Maverick in Top Gun look like a big-time pussy..
...."Finally" you say that as in it's the first movie ever in 2020 There's many films. And you also forget about kamikaze (they were considered dive bombers)
I really love the scene where the Rear Admiral Yamaguchi dismisses his crew and stays aboard his agonizing ship. He seems so paternal, so quiet, so proud...
Rear Admiral Tamon Yamaguchi. The scene of the crew gathered on the deck as Hiryu sinks is, in fact, reality. Many officers cried as Yamaguchi vowed to stay with the ship, because he was like a father figure to many of them. A great commander and a good man, just one stuck on the wrong side of the war.
If anyone was wondering or doesn't know why the Dauntless' were flying so close together during the dive, it was due to miscommunications between squadron, as one group was to hit either the Kaga or Akagi, and another were to go for a different carrier, but instead they all went for the same target and ended up in that tight dive formation and nearly flew into each other.
That was the other carrier? Best and some of his squadron went to bomb the "far carrier" which is the akagi because mclusky decided to bomb kaga instead of akagi
That was the other carrier? Best and some of his squadron went to bomb the "far carrier" which is the akagi because mclusky decided to bomb kaga instead of akagi
@@yello480 Not really? Best was going for Kaga and Mcclusky was to hit Akagi, but due to a miscommunication, both squadrons went for Kaga, hence why they were all bunched up. Best realized it last minute and switched targets. Learn to read

@@williamt.sherman9841 well.... Hollywood is about entertainment. real doesn't always sell very well. And if not for the intensely Amplified graphics... we would have been in for another Pearl Harbor... which I never saw because we've heard it all before. People want to be entertained whether it's real or not. The moment you sit down in the cinema you're in for a fake experience it's just a matter of if you're going to be entertained by it or not.
William T. Sherman true, but the CGI in this movie is so “fake” looking that it’s kinda in your face with it. Like it’s hard not to constantly think about it.
Something I like about this movie is how the action sequences are slower pace unlike many other recent games and movies where it is so fast pace that it becomes ridiculous
F-ZERO ZERO I was referring to the action sequences. Compared to the stuff you see in Michael Bay’s films or the BF V trailers where you see people just rushing into bullet storms and explosions for no other purpose than to create a sense of intensity this one was refreshing because it felt more normal and realistic. This scene is a good example you see the dive bombers begin their dive and the AAA coming at them but you don’t see them making wild and crazy and unrealistic maneuvers, to me it felt so realistic that It actually reminded me of the WW2 documentaries I used to watch in the History Channel when I was a child.
@@jp-sn6si I mean compared to the stuff you see in Michael Bay’s films or the BF V trailers to name a few, yeah pretty slow pace and I really like it. Reminds me of the WW2 documentaries I used to watch in the History Channel when I was a child.
is it just me, or if you watch the second bombinb scene over a few dozen times, you just get the feeling the directors wanted to create the effect of a samurai warrior making a dedicated strike against an opponent. Full focus, full direction onto the target, but at the same time keeping his wits and courage with him, because he intends to strike not just crash into the deck, the warrior seeks ultimate victory with a perfect attack.
LT Best was credited with the first hit on the Hiryu and the sinking of the Kaga. He is the only pilot that received credited for hitting both carriers that day that the Enterprise attacked. McCluksky was in surgery for the second one getting his shoulder repaired. Also the scene were they threw the gunner and pilot overboard attached to the anchor actually happened. It was confirmed after the war by reading the after action report of the ship involved were they stated recovered American dive bomber crew in occurrence with standing fleet orders crew was executed by standard means.
Yes, it's over the top Hollywood, but imagine being 20 years old and flying into that shit storm, then pushing that stick forward and dive towards an almost certain death hoping you can score a hit and pull up in time. No joke.
Its exagerated on how low the planes drop the bombs. The role of the dive bomber was to fly as high as possible and use the air brakes to precisely drop the bombs from an high altitude (1500 meteres to 3500 meteres) to avoid being destroyed by flaks or airplanes. Hell the planes in this scene were not even affected by air drag, you can pull up your airplane but depending on your speed it will take a few secs(its a lot when flying a plane) just for your plane to reorientate, and the heavier the mass the worst it gets.
@@sergeeduardodegernier5195 not to mention the fact that the light AA rounds seem to be exploding at increasingly lower altitudes as the planes dive. That wouldn't happen as they had to be set to explode at a certain altitude before firing. It would be impossible to tailor the detonation time to the height of a rapidly diving aircraft.
Darn sight easier to hit a long narrow target if you bomb down it , not across it. If attacking from the stern then the ships movement slightly reduces the speed differential giving a couple of seconds more aiming time.
@@DieyoungDiefast jackass watch the movie or at least learn the history. Some of the pilots were inexperienced / under trained so the steep dives were too hard for them explaining the shallower attack runs
Major catch is 25mm cannons the Japanese used. The real life version was worse than the movie showed in every way possible. That flak was overkill considering the weapon being showcased.
Ian W. Toll's Pacific War series really goes into detail as to how friggin difficult it was for dive bombers. I feel like this movie really does justice to the immense skill and bravery that these men demonstrated, flying into walls of shrapnel. The one thing I wish the movie did was to use multicolored bursts for the flak, which is what the Japanese did historically. Different colors were used for different altitudes so as to help with their aim.
Part of me wonders if it was intentional. I remember people dragging Fury for having the tanks shoot "lasers," without knowing what tracer rounds were, haha.
@@AntonymLowe I bet they'd hate an accurate movie about the Pacific naval war then considering the Japanese also used coloured shell dyes for their guns so they could tell which shots belonged to which ship.
I like his books, too. You can tell the movie used his books a lot for references. I remember reading about Gaido shooting the bomber with the SBD's MG and the weather during Doolittle raid being stormy, the wind being around 37 knots, from Toll's book. When they show it in the movie, i'm actually impressed they went this far.
Recently there has been a datamined map called "Pacific Ocean" which in theory oculd actually take place at Midway, further datamined information says that the map's available vehicles are amphibious tanks, PT boats and planes.
What might have happened had we not broken their code? They would have kept kicking our butts for another 6-12 months....until production of all the superior equipment and training caught up with them. Would have been ugly....I think they would easily have overrun Midway and then attacked Hawaii...forcing the 3 American carriers into battle there and then their experience would prob have sunk our fleet All those experienced pilots would still be alive and that is very scary. The cream of the crop! We'd have won, no doubt...….but it would have been even bloodier
probably because they did not want to Mod it. This whole script revolves around Bombing 6 and Scouting 6. and only has a little bit of Torpedo 6. Fighting 6 did nothing at the battle of Midway other than defend Yorktown. Fighting 3 (from Yorktown) played a key role in the battle but no Yorktown groups are shown (other than a few dive bombers seen attacking Soryu from a distance.
Sir Illuminar The Valient : Yes, the rest of the F4Fs either failed to find the Japanese fleet (VF-8) or were at such high altitude over the enemy fleet that they couldn’t see the Zeros attacking the TBD Devastators far below (VF-6).
@Han Lockhart with how they have them sinking the carriers this way? No. They should try again, this time with a history book or better yet, with someone who actually has *actual* knowledge of the events of Midway, not 'it's a place that a thing happened in WW2 with people who shot at each other and there were planes and ships and 'splosions!"
Slayer 399 I know someone who was in the navy and he said it was pretty accurate for a Hollywood movie. Although of course they added some “entertainment”. And the main guy actually did survive all those dives and was rewarded for it (as shown in the movie)
I liked the details like the bomber missing the target and when they have a torpedo hit on a Japanese boat but the torpedo is a dud and doesnt blow up. It's a reality of war that isn't often seen in films-- the heartbreak of missed opportunities in battle
I mean, the visuals are very unrealistic and "holywood-ish" but I loved the ambiance of the scenes. Very intense. Closing my eyes and imagining the scene with sound makes it very immersive.
Yes to visuals are a bit over-the-top but at the same time I really felt the intensity of those scenes. I watch movies in a premium theater only 40 seats with Dolby Atmos.... And Damn.. first time I saw it... I immediately bought a ticket to see it again right after
@@wescoleman6240 I know... some people are getting all pissed off that it's " unrealistic "... nitpicking the movie over every last detail and while they might be correct... the bottom line is it was a fun and entertaining movie that told a truly epic story ( unlike that dogshit called Avengers Endgame that was unbelievably slow-paced boring... and a total lie). The critics of this movie simply don't understand that these planes hardly exist anymore and if they do they'll be in a museum they are far too precious to be used in a reckless movie set.
Better minds than mine point out that the real attack scenes didn't have so much traffic in them, but I still find the special effects here to be extraordinarily gripping. They give a sense of what it must have been like diving into a rising storm of AA flak and machine gun fire.
Yeah that was some pretty good dialogue… I am very pleased that they did not paint the Japanese in a negative light… The world has enough violence as it is without starting more hatred… But they don’t talk about is how horribly the Japanese were treated during World War II… I’ve seen documentaries about how they were rounded up in camps on the American mainland. No difference in concentration camps… Maybe they were being forced to work and all that shit but it was detainment nonetheless
F-ZERO Honestly, with the kind of stuff Japan was doing in Asia, they didn’t suffer enough in WWII and several criminals who killed millions escaped unscathed.
The scenes with the Japanese were very good, not many movies I've seen showed how much a division there was among the Japanese ranks about the conflict, showing they weren't just mindless soldiers marching off to war without question. While it was disgusting how the U.S. citizens were treated....Don't exaggerate, there is a very big difference between interning them in crappy conditions(while being a full violation of their rights) to a concentration camp that was actively designed to kill those it housed. If there was no difference I doubt units like the Purple Heart Brigade would have even existed. While I have no issue with the current Japanese people, the WWII Japanese is a different story, a lot of them did escape justice for their actions and compared to what happened the the Chinese population and pretty much every area they conquered, Japan's population got off easy and they recieved tremendous amount of support to rebuild...but to be fair, there was plently of U.S. soldiers who admitted they could have been put on war crimes themselves if the war had gone the other way. By that point the mentality was kill or be killed, and unfortunately that's what they had to have to defeat an enemy refusing to surrender.
@@braziliankaiser8304 just to tell you that. The Waffen SS are equally similar to the IJA (Imperial Japanese Army). The Wehrmacht is the equivalent of the IJN (Imperial Japanese Navy) this is because the IJA and IJN always have conflict between them just like the SS and the Wehrmacht. Also to makes thing clear. I don't mean there's no fanatics in the Wehrmacht and the IJN. There are but the numbers are relatively low. By low means probably a million.

It should be accurate. But I don’t bitch too much about it nor should we forget the importance of historical accuracy in films.
Actually the old videos of the pacific war shows ships shooting inmense walls of lead in hopes to have a lucky hit. Anti-aircraft guns of WWII lack a lot of precision unlike today's guns.
Yes and in addition aircraft carriers were relatively new and it was basically get in and do your best. Not like today where they’ve had years of training programs developed
V DOG the person in the movie did manage to hit two carriers in one day and survived the flak wall shown here. Good thing AA guns weren’t computer guided yet
@@alfredohernandez7486 The videos (shot by the US side)only show the Japanese attacking the US fleet and the USN had more AA guns with a much higher rate of fire. If there was a video of the US attacking the Japanese, the AA would be a LOT less. If you look at the photos of Yamato or other IJN ships under attack, there was almost no visible AA fire.
The bomb release altitudes are horrifically wrong in this movie. I know it's for entertainment and it builds tension, but most dive bombers wanted to release around 3000 ft. The altitude was important because it allowed the bombs to penetrate the deck.
True and also you won’t recover from a dive from that kind of low altitude, you’ll just crash and the explosion from your own bomb would kill you, suffice to say no sane person would dive to that kind of low altitude
And who told you this? According to first hand accounts of the pilots and back-seaters who actually fought in the war, they would drop their bombs at closer to 1500 feet. Are you going to call them liars?
The after action reports from the morning attack showed little to no AA and no Zeros. This was due to all the attention given to the Americsn torpedo bombers. The afternoon attack had Zeros flying counter air biy were ineffective as the Japanese defense was overwhelmed by both five bombers as well as bombers flying from Midway.
At the time of a dive bomber attack the Zeros were on their carriers being rearmed. They had exhausted their limited ammunition load on the torpedo bombers.
@@jamesricker3997 no they always had to have zeros in protrction, when one zero group lands a new one has to take off and etc, the thing is, during the dive bombing attack all the zeros were drawed on american torpedo bombers and fighters at a other side of the fleet so there were no zeros overhead and japanese lost

Marketing definitely feel them on this one
Isn’t “arial” a font, like helvetica? Aerial attack is something you do with planes, arial attack sounds incredibly nerdy , something that goes on at a newspaper or publisher... Lucky it didn’t say Ariel attack, couldn’t have watched a mermaid attack the japanese navy. Never mind, English isn’t my first language, so I probably could not spell it either at the first go.
Just crazy how they fought back in WW2. If you compare this to the actual footage of battleship and carrier fights, its fairly accurate for a Hollywood production.
So are you suggesting that a war is a good thing and we should send all our teenagers to likely death to toughen them up? I'm not sure about you but I personally believe people are better off alive than dead. I honestly don't get people like you who just moan 'reeeee teenagers bad' despite the fact that anyone under the age of 90, which I expect includes you, has had life that was no less easy than theirs. Out of curiosity what was the state of the world when you were 25? I ask because I am currently 25 and am willing to bet a lot of money that it's more fucked up now than when you were 25.
I loved it... The dive bombing runs were INTENSE on the big screen. Saw it at least 5 times just for that. The script is fast paced and clean. I think the movie would have done a lot better if they done a better job in marketing. When people hear " A True Story " or " Based on a True Story "... many people think it will be boring. It would have been better if they had minimized the True Story aspect and pushed harder on the Action Movie aspect... Then at the end in the credits they could make a big deal about the True Story Aspect. Action movies simply sell better... and being true tops it off. All the actors did a great job. Maybe it won't be at the top of their acting career... but movies like this launch actors into better roles.
