MIG Welding Project Metal and Wood Floating Corner Shelves This week we are finishing up our floating corner shelf project. In this episode we are MIG welding on the shelf support brackets, capping the top of the tube, cutting and staining the shelves then I show you how I preserve and treat bare metal for a unique industrial look. I am super happy how this project came out. This is a great DIY how to beginner welding project and it's a great way to organize any room.

Nice LADDER oops I meant shelving unit you built. Your grandson will really enjoy it and find the use’s soon enough. Might consider tabs to keep the shelves from being lifted by accident? I really like the way you answered the out of square problem right away. Hope nothing got frost bit with all that slapping 🤫🤭🤣🤗. Stay safe and keep up the good work and videos. Fred. 🙏🏻🙏🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻✋🏻✋🏻

I really appreciate all the tips you provide! So incredibly helpful for a newbie metal fabricator. Today I learned how to cap the ends of square stock! Thanks for describing your grinding methodology. Lots of folks show themselves using different wheels but rarely explain why and how they use the different wheels/abrasives.

Good job Brandon and good 2 see you again. I came up with an Awesome rack to hold my grinders and that was to give away all the boxes of grinders I've owned from my old shop and keep only 1 or 2 of each. After years and years of machining and fab in the shop you collect so much shit you don't even realize it, lol...Take care buddy and keep teaching the young folks techniques as they are our future as well all those that just want to learn how to do it...

Brandon, this would have been a good time to discuss building jigs and fixtures for welding. I had a Suzuki Samurai that I bought from a seller, and had to make a front bumper for. Apparently she struck something when she was on a bender, and I had to make one. I should have used dom pipe, but I used steel water pipe. It turned out well as for looks, but when a man stole a car and ran it into my vehicle that struck the one in front of me, I found out it wasn't as strong as I thought. I capped the pipe ends as you did here, and I made it look like solid 1" round stock. Keep up the good work.
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 2 года назад
Thanks man! reminds me of the one and only time that I built a 4x6 front tube bumper for an old beat up Toyota pickup I bought. I ended up capping the ends and used it as a portable air tank then came up with the idea to add electric / hydraulics and a lift arm for raising pipe for welding pipelines. It worked pretty slick until eventually I taco'd the frame lol

I worked in a factory for 37 1/2 years and for most of those years there wasn't any kind of protection. I started off in the cutting end, where I even worked around and on shears. Cutting up to one inch of steel. That was very noisy, machine shop, and where they built bodies and frames on the overhead for me. Not till the last five years did the company change it's ways. So now all I hear is ringing. At home I wear ear protection when I can.

Sorry to hear about that Jake. I know just mowing the grass I will wear headphones (now) and once I'm done mowing it is so nice to just be able to hear. I think most of us take safety for granted then we get older and it starts to matter. Thats how it was for me anyways.

My "go-to" for tips and tutorials. Thanks! How do you manage keeping projects like these from warping? I'm on a flux core setup and always seem to deal with some sort of warping.
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 2 года назад
Thanks man I appreciate it! Thats actually a really good question that I should probably talk about in an upcoming video. Most of the time I have a "feel" for how the metal is going to repond when I weld it. Basically I get it tacked "perfect" but because it never ends up perfect there is always one side that needs to go just a little more. That is the side I weld first because the weld will pull the piece, then I go to the opposite corner to pull in the other direction. It probably sounds complicated but I will make sure to show it in an upcoming episode. Great question, thank you!

No welder ever said, I have too many welding machines 🤣🤣 Just out of interest, have you looked at any of the Fireball Tool squares? Great if you can't use your table, for keeping things square. 🤣🤣Nothing like the Missus to keep you in check 🤣🤣
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 2 года назад
I have Basil. I've actually thought about building a set as a DIY project but I just haven't come up with a foolproof way to ensure they are square. I'm confident I could pull it off but it's coming up with a simple jig for repeatability that has me stumped.

You said you wiped it down with mineral spirits and then did you also wipe it down with paint thinner? Can you maybe put a link for what you used to wipe it down? Also, do you throw everything you used with the mineral spirits into your airtight metal garbage can? Do you throw your little rag you used with the paste wax in that as well?
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 2 года назад
The paint thinner and mineral spirits are one and the same. This is what I use. amzn.to/3lDwDUZ I throw everything that's petroleum based in an airtight metal can and I believe the paste wax is also. The rag I wipe it on with just stays in the Minwax can and the rag I buff with gets tossed out in the metal trash can.

Which is why it's important to know how to use the tools you buy as well as your ability and skill level. No different than shooting a gun, riding a bike or driving a car. It takes practice and focused attention
