Quick correction: it looks like Metapidgeon will only produce the show like they’ve done with LoVM. Titmouse will handle the animation again which I’m very excited about. They’ve done a great job with Vox Machina and I think they’ve knock it out of the park with the Mighty Nein.

I am 72 years old, and I also subscribe to four different streaming services. Lately, all of these services have been sitting unused because I just discovered Critical Role's second campaign on RU-vid. I find myself preferring to sit through these three and four year old episodes of live play rather than trying to find anything worth watching on these other streaming services. The Mighty Nein have won my heart, and the thought of an animated series coming to Prime is one of the most exciting things i have heard of for a long time! I am stoked!!!

I agree the the Mighty NEIN were the best campaign to date. Campaign one was classic, campaign two was special to me and campaign three...let's say turbulent. I connected with the Mighty Nine characters more easily and loved the NPCs, the guest characters, the overall story. The only thing that bothers me is THAT I HAVE TO WAIT SO LONG!!!!! Cliffhanger with Molly's death? Yeah, I see that happening. Still, I'm excited

The thing is, we're already on our third near-death in TLoVM part-way into S2; by the time M9 comes out, viewers will be trained not to believe that any death is permanent. Ending M9 S1 on the death of Molly won't have that much weight, since most new viewers will just assume it'll be undone or reversed somehow with the start of S2. I think the irrevocability of it needs to be established before S1 ends. Maybe it ends with Molly's empty grave.

I started with C2. I loved almost everything you said in this video. And I want to agree with everything as well. BUUUTTTT I can see where the show might actually do the opposite and people may not be in love with the first season. But yes after mollys death I can see people definitely coming back. I REALLY hope I'm wrong about that but I think it'll be hard to keep the audience hooked for the first season onto the second

I imagine that the things they can get away with not changing will be left alone, but even in LoVM, they've changed a lot of monster designs to be distinct enough from what's shown in the various Monster Manuals. For example, Hotis didn't have the distinctive backwards paws of a rakshasa and none of the dragons resemble the D&D artworks.

With the show already having changed the names of the big entities (like the gods and Vecna) and the monster names changing (Sahuagin becoming Adaro) they’ve laid the foundation to avoid the OGL issues

Oooh, what if Episode 11 ended with Molly’s death, but then Episode 12 ended with them entering the Grove, and the last shot was a rear doorway silhouette of Caduceus saying “hold on, I’ll make more tea.”

Critical Role started to change name of races and gods from the beginning of campaign 3 and the first season of Legends of Vox Machina so I'm not sure how the OGL would affect them, if it will at all.

Then more seasons. Season 2 Fjord arc will be cool then. The fact that it said Movie deal as well means canon one shots like an Uk'otoa movie in the end. 😲

I was thinking the best sequence would be ending season 1 with Lorenzo & the slavers, but There's a tiny, tiny chance that they skip forward to Molly's end by episode 3 or 6 itself. Campaigns can be open ended but viewers can tend to get disinterested if their shows don't have a specific sequence or end-goal in mind

One thing they will have to do with Molly's death is to make sure that people who come from watching Legends of Vox Machina realize he is definitely dead while it happens. That show will probably have had multiple resurrections by this point and they don't want the audience to think he will come back because it has happened multiple times before. In a DnD campaign, we realize this as watchers since we know they are not high enough level to do a resurrection.

Metapidgeon already produced LoVM since Season 1 (Logo is displayed at the very end of the credits)

Amazon was smart. With all the dnd drama going on locking down one of the most popular and biggest streams will be a huge benefit to them.

There is zero OGL issues. They have gone out of there way to mention nothing D&D related with this animated series. They changed the look of the dragons to be completely different and they have not mentioned names of any D&D copyrighted material. So all of this is out of D&D’s hands. Even if it was not steaming shows and other media are not covered under the OGL only books and print media.

The Legend of Vox Machina is great, both the animation and the original. But M9 is just the best campaign hands down.

The "Best campaign" argument is pure subjective. I had trouble getting into it. Same with C3, but by then I got burnout, I'm having a break atm. In my opinion it's the Campaign you started with that's the best to an individual. For me, that's VM and I love all of it. For me, it's a shame what happened with "InsertReasonWeAllKnowAbout", because the Kraghammer arc is great. (not counting the sound issues)

When thinking about this show I'm excited, but I also noticed that I remember barely anything from the plot (I watched much of it live, but took some breaks). Just the main cast of characters and a few extra, plus some disconnected scenes.

I can see leaving off on Molly's death, but am more inclinded to condence down the season a bit more, include the rescue, and end with them visiting Molly's grave on the trip back. With maybe a bit more forshadowing about Ford's deal, and them deciding earlier to follow that thread... so ending with the weight of their loss, but also a huge question mark needing to be answered.

I think people say the best campaign is the one they started with. You're suggestions for the first season are so on point. Even with the cliffhanger

It would make a lot of sense for the season to end where you mentionned. That would be a good cliffhanger leading to probably the first 3-parter of season 2, leading to Menagerie Coast shenanigans and ending season 2 around the Xhorhas arc, with the M9 becoming heroes of the Dynasty and going to the King's Cage. Season 1 may also end with the defeat of the Iron Shepherds, leading season 2 to the Menagerie Coast, but that may mean skipping a few things in the process. I'm guessing Alfield may not have much screentime.

They could get a license for anything they want I’m sure but also they have Amazons legal department behind them (and theirs) to help them make it enough non dnd and they showed in VM they will change things to separate from WotC

I mean with how much wizards intentionally or unintentionally added to CC good chance they won't have to alter much. Particularly when the cost of wizards trying to sue wouldn't just be legal fees but probably kill the brand entirely from the PR.

While I really enjoyed the early and mid sections of C2 a ton, the last arc with the Somnovum really felt lacking to me, especially given the epicness of the C1 ending arc. It was fun and enjoyable, but for me personally, it didn't have that "it" factor that C1s ending did. Still, when I heard the news I was so jazzed! Can't wait for this!

What are you most excited for with the Mighty Nein show?

Minor tweaks to avoid copyright are already part of CR animation anyway (Scanlan's Hand, for example), and I can see similar things happening again without detracting from the story at all. It's an adaptation, right? Viewers expect things to get switched up in an adaptation. Also it is worth thinking about what is and isn't copyrightable, please note that I am not a lawyer. You can trademark a name and copyright a visual image or written expression or similar, but that's about it. You also cannot copyright rules and processes (which should include stat blocks, if the stat block itself is never shown as an image clipped from the MM or whatever and you just see a creature behave *in accordance with* the stat block). So for example if Lorenzo looks too much like the example in the Monster Manual then that's copyright, and if they call him an Oni then that's trademark. If they change up his Oni form so that it is distinct from the picture in the MM and never actually call him an Oni, just call him a "demon" or "spectre" or something generic like that, then there's eff-all that Hasbro can do. Again, look at Scanlan's Hand! It does everything that a Bigby's Hand does, but it is also just a big magenta hand. It behaves according to the D&D rules for Bigby's Hand, but you cannot copyright rules and you cannot copyright something as generic as a big magenta hand. The only part which is actually protected is the name "Bigby's Hand" itself, and so that is the aspect which had to be changed. Looking at PC races: Firbolgs will be an interesting one. The Fir Bolg is a creature of Celtic mythology. Two questions arise: 1) is the D&D Firbolg sufficiently distinct from the mythological Fir Bolg as to be a protectable entity? 2) Does use of the name itself infringe on that protection when that name is cribbed from a mythology book? Aasimar is a no-sell because Pathfinder have Aasimar and Hasbro haven't sued them. You don't get to claim IP after years of letting it slide, which is why you hear all these stories of Disney contacting parents to stop them giving their dead kid a Spiderman gravestone (though they're weirdly fine with cops and Punisher skulls). Same again with Tieflings. Goblins are generic AF already. I think it'll be mostly fine. Again though, not a lawyer.

The OGL does not affect streams and tv shows etc, that is all a different license.

definitely feel that with the lessons they need to learn with VM is to slow down the story a bit, and tell it as if its never been told before -- despite being amazing that its animated - i feel like its super rushed and i would hate for them to do that with Mighty Nine -- especially at ETD said, its probably their best story to date. Defnintely welll rounded characters, even down to their interpretation of voice styles and acting for each character, i dunno, i think went even harder than in VM. HB has me folded tho, very bold in the complications of their characters and their development xD

Campaign two had "moments" that were good but I personally didn't like 2 as much as 1. I felt that the overall direction and pacing of C2 was slow, and it felt a bit unfocused. But there will be cool episodes nonetheless.

FYI Metapigeon is a subsidiary of CR (its media division). Just like Darrington Press is their games division. Metapigeon is a CR joke of when a player tells another player information "above the table". They do it by making pigeon noises while giving the information.

I hope they don't go anywhere near that fast, the issue with LoVM is rushing through the story and not enough time given to fall in love with the characters, too rushed. If theyre chasing Lorenzo by episode 9 then noone would care what happens on that road, and they'd have skipped a TON of story

They're not even halfway through the Vox Machina campaign, which could conceivably take 5 or 6 seasons to complete, and they're already starting on the Mighty Nein campaign.

Don't get me wrong I absolutely love the animations and how incredible vox machina came together but 2 years to create a season is a bit too long isn't there like software that they can just move the 3d character around to speed it up instead of drawing everything per frame?

Hopefully they don’t cut as much from this series! TLoVM is great, but it feels rushed.

I just hope they do the death better than it actually happened but still have it narrativly be do to poor choices by the character and not make it out to be do to the enemy just being better.

Oh please let WotC try to muscle in on Amazon's money with some BS OGL claim. They aren't some small 3rd party publisher who can't afford to challenge Hasbro in court. I doubt it would happen, but I would love to see Hasbro and WotC get destroyed in court by Amazon's legal division, ending the OGL controversy.

Why do you keep saying this is their first? They produced Vox Machina on their own. But your timeline is correct 2-3 years, most likely out by the time vox machina finishes.

The ONLY thing DND owns is the beholder and like mindflayers? They don’t own elves, or goblins, or dragons, or even dungeons. What are they going to copyright?? They slightly change the monsters and boom. Wizards of the coast has a claim to nothing.
