USA's Mike and Bob Bryan defeat France's Michael Llodra and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the men's tennis doubles final from Wimbledon at the London 2012 Olympic Games (4 August 2012).
Tennis has a long Olympic history but withdrew from the programme after 1924. It did not return as a medal sport until 1988. Professionals are now welcome to compete, and the Olympic competition includes men's and women's singles and men's and women's doubles.

That get from Bob on match point deserved a gold medal all on its own. That was incredible. That embrace at the end was so sweet. Can't not root for them. Such a wonderful team.

John lii that was funny. As an American, I'm proud of the Bryans. They represent tennis well and you can see the respect they get during handshakes. After the williams sisters and the bryans, we're screwed.

It took them three olympic games to win the gold. In Athens they lose to Gonzalez-Massu (they won gold), In Beijing they lose to Federer-Wawrinka (also won gold) and finally in London. Fantastic.

Here you can see that Tsonga is just not as used as the other three players to play doubles that often. He probably was waiting and then not really ready to hit a clean shot all of a sudden...

So the Bryans put their backhands on the outside on returns, while Tsonga/Llodra line up forehands on the outside. Any reason for this with regard to the strengths/weaknesses of each player?

Classic doubles doctrine stacks strength up the middle as most serves (should) go there to reduce angle of return. BB have used FH outside at times. Mac and Fleming were FH outside. Depends on the pref I guess. I like FH inside. Hope that´s helpful.

The players didn't have to look like hospital orderlies and the hallowed grounds of Wimbledon didn't split open because they weren't wearing colonial white, imagine that! Of course we all know that the Wimbledon tournament has an all white apparel rule because those old stodges that run the place still live in the past where the sun never sat on the British Empire and all it's house servants wore white! Oh and don't get me started about their stupid no tie-break rule in the fifth set! Come on Wimbledon move into future, I commend you for equal prize money but nobody wants to watch a six and a half hour tennis match!
