Mike and Gill go to Los Angeles (Swing House Studios) to kick start the second series of the Mike Dolbear Web Show. With guests Thomas Lang and Virgil Donati & show regular Gibratar's Brent Barnett doing 'Brent's Hang'.
What makes these two even more likeable is their self-awareness and grounded attitudes. Clearly, to every other drummer/musician in the world, they are two of the best to ever grace a kit. To them I think they've surpassed any stigma in regard to greatness and have settled more aptly into the confine of seeking to expand and improve their already astonishing abilities for the sake of the music. It's obvious they are two of the best drummers who ever lived. Now it's a question of where do they go from here to there in terms of innovation and those things that fulfill them as individuals.
Virgil, 1:52 "I'm not a super drummer". Little bit of false modesty here? If Virgil isn't a super drummer....who else is the super drummer on this planet? I think Virgil and Thomas are BOTH PHENOMENAL DRUMMERS. Most drummer will probably never reach that level. Absolutely TOP!
Both phenomenal musicians and this was a great interview. Thanks for uploading. Its funny how Thomas is so much more social and quicker with slang jokes and terms where Virgil is the introvert
There style to me is a different state of musical mind set and odd time playing . I cant count odd time playing that far apart and still be in some sort of time . What am i saying i dont know but it blows my mind to watch either play and very entertaining . Thank you guys
If there was a movie about Thomas Lang, I would say mark wahlberg could definitely play the role. Aside from the height factor. Killer interviews by the way!
I have recently discovered Virgil D. and was wondering if he is a big influence for TL. The technical achievements of both are insane (and similar, I think).
They are just different , that’s the beauty of a player , the story of his her life , his learning experiences , musical influences , and the way the digest it, you could even have two with the “same background” but they will have a different taste , that the beauty of humans versus machines , maybe you are confused with wich you like the most, and there is nothing wrong with that, for example me I prefer listening to Chris Dave for everything said above, but I also know I can’t say he is better than Virgil or Thomas , wich I admire , and I think every drummer who is not jealous (I know it’s hart haha) will.
All power to Virgil, he is truly the greatest progressive drummer ever and will likely never be even mildly challenged. Thomas, an excellent drummer, is not in the same stratosphere and he knows it; but Thomas has this hilarious affableness about him, he seems like a very likeable and amusing dude with a cheeky sense of humour, the 'bullshit alert' prank is great! Virgil on the other hand has always had a very socially awkward overly serious intensity about him, great for the relentless pursuit of true excellence but makes for a most uncomfortable interview experience! I'm surprised how many people seem to interpret Thomas as being arrogant, personally I think he is far more affable and humble compared to Virgil's remote intensity and false modesty because he knows he is simply unmatched in the world.
Virgil said he loves the uk and London . why does he never(rarely) play herre? last time i saw him was 2007 in Leeds on a small clinic tour. other than playing some gigs with Holdsworth, he hasn't really been over here, gigging it seems
it s very annoying how thomas lang is full of himself !!! and look at Virgil, how a humble guy he is. i think perfectness comes with a humble pernosa. That s why Thomas bound to be an average drummer.(technic wise thomas s really good but that s it. if u are not creative, technic is nothing)
Yeah what ya talkin about ? He is a super nice guy, nothing wrong about confidence, if you say to your self “im an excelent drummer” there is nothing wrong, (unless you are foolin yourself) on the other hand “that guy is a piece of shit cause he can’t play double bass like me or him” then that is how you don’t wanna be.
