Diets for bodybuilding can be a bit lacking in nutrition and actual enjoyment. Fixation on macronutrients while dieting for bodybuilding can leave a lot on the table for managing overall health and support for training. Today, I’ll cover Mike Israetel’s diet. He is a knowledgeable trainer in the fitness community, the founder of Renaissance Periodization and a competitive bodybuilder. This isn’t any attack on Mike, he’s a good dude, but lets see about his diet.

Most bodybuilders have eating disorders tracking and weighing everything. I've felt far better since I stopped tracking calories and protein.

That’s good to hear man. As I said in the video, tracking macros really isn’t the best way forward. Unless you have a precise weight class to get to, I guess, but that’s not many people.

@neonhealth I have lost 22 pounds without tracking just ate less. Didn't worry about the scale just checked every few weeks.

He was talking about in some of his fat cutting videos that making the meals bland on purpose means that he's not getting cravings when hungry so he wont eat too much and go over the macros. I can kind of see the idea of making it as easy as possible if he's quite busy, it seems to be quite a lot of prepped and prepackaged things to save time, especially if he has to eat six times a day.

Interesting comment, thanks for that! I still think he could get a lot more out of additional veg/fibrous foods to help with satiety. As well as the anti-inflammatory foods I talked about, just for overall wellbeing and recovery. I guess you could do this and still keep it bland hahah.

Throwing in me 2 cents on isolate. Some folks get stomach issues with concentrate and blends so isolate is an alternative to that though of course costs more. I also acknowledge protein powders are in no way a necessity, but if someone has the money and prefers it for whatever reason then makes sense in that scenario.

Thats interesting, I thought it was whey in general that gives them that. I guess you're left with plant based or isolate in those cases, both of which are more expensive than regular whey. Thanks for the insight!

Yeah, it seems to me like "typical bodybuilding diet" is somehow stuck in US culture? For example check "Lee Lem", not pro bodybuilder (tried to get card 2 times I think). He is Australian with Asian ancestry/genes, and his diet is totally diferent.

Had a look, seems like a more well rounded diet. You’re right though, you’d think that the generic bodybuilder diet would have died off by now given the modern evidence against it but so many people still swear by it hahah

Yeah, its actually very good at managing diabetes, such that some bodybuilders use it as damage control.
