It was an absolute dream come true to play and teach on the same stage that I have seen so many of my idols perform on. Thank you RU-vidrs from the bottom of my heart for supporting my journey over the past few years :)
Indeed. I love Mangini as a person and in Dream Theater - but his *solos* are beyond tedious. Nobody wants to hear a drummer practicing his rudiments for 50 minutes.Oh you have 100% limb independence and can play 19 over 16 like it's nothing ? Yeah great. The musical equivalent of watching paint dry imo. It would be like hearing John Petrucci practice guitar scales to a metronome for an hour.
Had a touch of Jimmy Chamberlin in there ! Also proof that you don't need a 14 piece kit to play a great solo. I've always thought smaller kits force you to be more creative rather than using every tom on every fill. And smaller kits are just more fun.
One of my favorite drummers hands down. His humbleness, personality and of course skills sets Mike Johnston apart. Please keep up the amazing work your doing and may God continue to bless you.
The ONE and ONLY, Mr. Johnston. You put a smile on my face every time I hear you play and I'm proud and honored to be a part of a drum family like MikesLessons....but most importantly, I can't THANK YOU enough for being my drum teacher and for what you have taught me over the years. Uncle K
These kinds of drummers are the best. Matt Halpern and Mike Johnston alike, prove that you don't need any stick tricks to prove your drumming worth. Modesty has shown to be the best drumming policy.
i get so bored of metal drummers, that i just decided to watch thos from one of his linear lessons, and wow, i dont know many drummers outside the entire metal genre but benny grab and this guy are incredible
Just amazing, Mike! One of the best solos I've ever seen! Killer chops and yet very musical and creative! Greetings from Kazakhstan, Central Asia. Thank you for inspiration and motivation to get better every day! You're the man!
That was DOPE! Love how you always seem to bring your own positive energy into your playing and no matter what it may be, even some rudiment you've been doing and teaching for years, always enjoying every second of the instrument. Great ambassador for the drums and a joy to take lessons from. Plus a killer drummer. Awesome job Johnston!
Mike you seem such a great guy.. I really admire you... As an artist and as a person.. I`m a big fan of yours since your first video.. Thank you for being an inspiration in music and in life.. Keep it up! Cheers from Argentina!
Mike is such a genuine being. When I met him yesterday he approached me as if we'd known each other for a while. I sat on the ground right behind him while he played and handed me a pair of his sticks, then he handed me the snare headed he uses!
My number one drumming inspiration. Mike is the "whole" package. Not only are his drumming skills/chops second to none, he is so humble and grounded. Proud & honored to have met him in person a couple of times which will remain a top highlight in my life. Thank you Mike!
I have been watching a few new drum videos today and you my friend are a true drummer/ musician that can show people what hard work does and how it pays off not some show off waving there arms and twirling sticks playing easy fills and beats and passing themselves off as a drummer your a true inspiration that kids and adults who want to play drums should follow your amazing teacher musician and as I can tell person keep up the good work you are doing a great service
Absolutely true, it doesn't happen in the guitar world that you might just get a call from your favorite guitarist wishing you best of luck........but in drumming world it might be true. May be in the melody world one might get to a saturation point, but in rhythmic world there's always and always energy flowing and many new things evolving every moment.
this is really a beautiful piece of solo written Mike! the part which you stop and do the groove again at the fast tempo is simply mind blowing. Love every part of this solo. Its has really good build up and its' layer of complexity can be appreciated by both the layman and the advance musician. simple awesome!
Awesome! A drum solo that grooves the whole time. Most drum solos bore me to tears after a couple of minutes and I move on. I watch the whole thing then parts of it after!! Love your style Mike.
Seriously SO...SO proud of you. It's so fun to be a spectator in this community and watch the positive encouragement that is SO abundant allll the time.
Hey Mike, I just want to say that you are the best, you got me back into drumming after a while of me just halfheartedly doing it, you have inspired me to try new things and have my own style, so I would like to honestly say thank you, thank you for reigniting my passion for drums! Stay awesome Mike!
Ok.. So I'm giving up drums and learn how to play more cowbell.... Fantastic! Like a top chef at fine restaurant. Just the right amount of everything to make one of the tastiest solo's I've heard and seen in some time! Thanks for being a mentor to all of us and never forgetting who you are. All the best! You've earned it!
Wow!!!! You are a monster!!! Loved the SAMBA patters in the middle. As I live in Brazil I'm always in touch with that music and I hear you can capture the real feel and spirit of it. You are a fantastic drummer, as well as a very intuitive amazing teacher. I'll keep following your channel. Thanks for the nice solo and inspiration!!!!
Mike. You are not only inspiring as a educator but as a performer as well. I love your playing. This solo was musical with a definite theme and you killed it man. I loved it.Rock On Mike Johnston
Poetry in motionnnnn! I almosy cried.... seriously. I admire you so much as a musician because you play with so much passion encased in so much humility. Awesome Mike. You inspire me.
I liked the video before you even started. What an awesome year this has been for you Mike! The Common Thread tour, your biggest clinic...at PASIC! Let's not forget your arm is on the bass drum reso's for the Meinl Festival haha. Many thanks for your labor in this community. You inspire so many people, myself included, keep it up!
Killer solo mike...very musical!!! That bossa nova ostinato on the feet and then soloing over it sounded killer. Also the way you use the 6 stroke roll is very nice. You play the heck out of that 6 stroke roll but more importantly, you play it like you mean it. Killer job mike
everytime I watch this I get pumped even more! I remember watching your super old videos when I was first finding youtube drumming stuff and now this!? man that's a pretty cool story. god bless =]
Man, I have got to right this comment. You took me so deep in a drum solo. İt is more like a song composition and I absolutely love it. It made my day, thank you.
great drummer and great guy, thanks for all the videos you made till today, i still hope to meet you one day to lear some more drummin'! really great solo!
Damn ! Something so honest about your game, man. Lovin' that style ;). Keep on inspriring a whole generation of drummers. You've never let me down ! Thank you and great job, as always !
What an interesting way to start your solo. That is the first time I have seen a solo started on the left foot. The whole solo was musical and very interesting. I like the musicality of your playing and find it to be incredibly inspiring to watch. Keep it up Mike, it is always enjoyable to watch you play.
