In recently going through my Mike Mentzer archives, I was curious as what was the first bodybuilding article that Mike ever wrote. I discovered that it was in 1977 and published in a defunct bodybuilding magazine entitled “Looking Good.”
The article relates how a lot of bodybuilders have unrealistic expectations regarding how much muscle they can gain on a weekly and even a monthly basis - particularly during their first year of training. Mike gives this belief a reality check and points out more realistic expectations.
Special thanks to John Balik for allowing me to use his copyrighted photos of Mike Mentzer in this video.

It is interesting that he says to not expect progress every workout as his "first" article but in later years he says you can see progress every workout. He progressed his mind :)

@muhanadtayfour7992 3 месяца назад
he said you will notice progress every workout in strength increase in weight or reps , here he is talking about muscle mass, there is no contradiction.

@@muhanadtayfour7992 i never said that. What I meant was that he develops his mind. so good. and I can see growth every workout (every 72 hours)

@@muhanadtayfour7992Yeah, if you’re going up in reps and/or weight each workout then you’re giving yourself enough time for recovery. There is almost absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t be stronger by your next workout

I started making progress by going intense for a short period of time and taking more rest days

Finding the best weight routine for you and your body goals is the first thing a newby should do then do your best with nutrition and give your best effort each time in the gym and you're GUARANTEED to see results! You almost certainly won't look like those guys in the bodybuilding magazines but you can and will alter your physique dramatically with persistence. But IT'S NOT GOING TO BE EASY! If it was then a whole lot more people would be in the gym!

There is no debate as to whether this approach works or not. Of course, it does.

I’m natural and I gotta remind myself everyday how slow of a process this is. Been following Mike since I got started and I see results every time but man it’s slow 😭

Aside from training and nutrition obviously, consistency is the key.

It's sad how little progress someone can make in one day, even at best. The body only uses a small amount of calories above maintenance for muscle growth each day which can make it extremely easy to overeat and make progress feel tremendously slow

I gained 25kgs of mass in my first year of training, went from 50-52 to 76 kgs of bodyweight. The last three months of training i have been using HIT, and gained 3kgs, lost 7 because of sickness, amd gained 3 back in 1 month. According to mike mentzer, with mediocre genetics, 1 year of bulking, and HIT training, you can max out up to 80% of your natural potential.

The Genetic Freak Steve Reeves said he gained 30 pounds of muscle in 4 months.
