In this video, Mike Mentzer reveals the commercial interests in bodybuilding that overemphasizeprotein to take advantage of aspiring bodybuilders. He also explains how much protein is actually in 10 pounds of muscle and therefore how much you would need to consume over the course of a year in order to build it.

Excellent! Blew my mind! I stopped using supplements years ago (I'm vegetarian), and I noticed no difference in my gains. Why did I stop? I just listened to my body. All is well.

This was a great post….. Too many over consume protein thinking they need 1grm per pound of body weight. This is has been a scam for decades.. more protein is like trying to water a plant 2 times a day thinking it’s going to grow faster.

What do you consider a healthy diet ? I’ve been doing 200g of protein a day. That’s 800 calories from protein. That’s too much?

Given that Mike only used 60 grams of protein a day when in training for the 1979 Southern Pro Cup (which he won), I would say it's more than you require.

Exactly. The misconception of more is better is like saying doing 30grms of creatine a day will give two times the strength. As long as you have adequate protein each meal it will be utilised for repair from training but gorging on so much protein a day is wasted food.

It’s worse than that. Protein from starches and animals is extremely acidic and difficult for the human body to breakdown. It clogs the lymph system and damages the kidneys. You can get all the amino acids you need to build muscle with medjool dates and bananas. Easily digestible and superior in quality for the human body

I can't believe that this video just helped me explain something. So if I am shooting for 150 grams of protein a day then I need to multiply that by 4 which bring me to about 600 calories and include that in my total calorie intake that way I can adjust accordingly

Also, if you intake Healthy Omega 3's as opposed to rancid Omega 6 fats, than your brain & heart will be happy and use the excess for energy. So John, how many grams of protein per day did Mike advise to take?? I believe 0.8 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight is plenty if you're lifting weights. If you dont lift weights then 0.4 grams per pound of bodyweight is plenty to maintain existing muscle. What was Mike's advice??

To my knowledge, Mike didn’t recommend specific grams per pound of bodyweight. He believed that 25% of your macro intake should be in the form of protein.

I'm quite far from 200 gr a day, but even to eat around 120 gr I get obsessed with meals plan and protein content. I will probably care a little bit less from now

Most of the protein that gets consumed aren't 100 percent absorbed by the human body, these are utilised by the body for various metabolic activities and the rest are passed on as waste.

Don't worry about the protein intake. Just be sure that you are consuming minimum requirement i.e 0.8 gram per kg bodyweight
