@setonhillstudios
@setonhillstudios Месяц назад
@@82mangini I don’t disagree BUT they are still phenomenal! Mangini is far more technical than Portnoy who I also admire. Guys like Steve Smith, Matt Garstka, Thomas Lang, and the list goes on and on, are probably all more technical and still fun to watch! So many great drummers out there for sure, BUT Portnoy and Carey are at the top of the list with the others. When you reach that level of mastery it becomes preference to styles many times. Thanks for hanging out!

@@82mangini Technical, complex and even “best” aren’t the only things that matter. Mike Portnoy would have Bonham, Ringo and Keith Moon on his Rushmore, even FARTHER from being the most technical, complex or best drummers. A person’s Mount Rushmore is based on the overall impact a drummer had to them based on their own musical tastes. People who are into prog metal will likely have Carey and MP on their Rushmore, the same as people who love classic rock might have a John Bonham or Moon

I tried learning this song a few years back, in my last year of High School. The time signatures are insane. I just count it as 6+6+4+6+7. Total time signature is 33/4, which is nuts. Giving this to Mike Portnoy was definitely a challenge for him.

Young musicians have to understand that it's not easy, it's normal to struggle, and it takes time. It won't come overnight for any instrument. We are watching one of the best drummers in history take an entire work day to learn a 12 minute song with 10 minutes of drumming in it, and he still can't play the whole thing through in one take. The only reason he was able to pull it off at all was his love for drumming. If you don't love your instrument, kids, you won't put yourself through this. Never give up if you are learning something that you love doing. The difference between success and failure is that you stick it out long enough for other people to quit before you do. Never fear failure, because we have all dealt with failure.

There's a lot of ppl on the video giving Portnoy crap for taking so long to grasp it... it didn't even take him that long for how complex the song is, most drummers practice for months to learn technical songs that they're going to audition for. most of the drummers that learnt "Dance of Eternity" for the DT were practicing for months & some of them still stuffed up on parts & played incorrectly.

This challenge is unfair. You can't master a complex song outside your usual style after just a few listens. Even if a highly technical player like Mangini were given the song, while he might easily grasp the time signatures, he could still struggle with capturing the song's feel if it's not in his preferred style, much like Dennis did with "Schism."

I might be a bedroom musician but I really appreciate the understanding of music and the open mind to break those rules, your way! Also,thinking differently for your instrument. Which is already crazy, but throw in some 3's in there, and It's impossible to keep up.😅 I liked Brandon's theory of it being 12 11 10, but it doesn't really groove that way for me. Also, would've been funny if they presented the song by It's name only and he would've thought It's the 'Numa Numa' -song. 😂

This was sort of mean to do to any drummer no matter what skill level. Not only is the tune very difficult to learn but it's played in a very "Danny Carry" specific way. Even when others cover it well, you can tell when it's not Danny. His fills, timing and overall feel are unique to him. This isn't just mean, it's an act of war and Portnoy should get them back for this.

not really. he kinda bitched out. Portnoy can only play his stuff (or Beatles tunes). He’s a great drummer and drum writer, but he proved he has a short ceiling in terms of on-the-fly learning. Compare to someone like Mangini or Marco or T Lang who had to learn his compositions on the fly, and you understand why there’s levels. Could I learn Pneuma to be feasible in 5 hours? probs not. but I’m not making millions as a pro drummer. he is. so don’t even argue that weak point with me.

He did a great job but definitely didn’t nail it. I find it really interesting on the different levels of drummers. You have your portnoys, pearts, manginis, But on the higher almost untouchable levels of drumming you have your Vinnie Calautti, Dave Weckl. They would be able to play this song blindfolded with one arm behind their back and learn it within one hour max, almost guaranteed. It’s frightening how good some master players are compared to “rock level” that were witnessing here.

If it takes you 10 years of screwing around, doing side projects, and touring as Tool all during those 10 years to pull together an album worth of material, in my opinion, just don't bother. Get in the damn studio or not.. NO BAND should take ten years to write new music unless they break up sometime during recording. Sorry, no props given here. @@setonhillstudios I made my comment out of experience. I've been writing, recording, touring for a VERY long time. From that experience alone I can assure you that it should never take a decade to make an album. Complex music can always be dissected and consumed bit by bit until it becomes second nature. Maynard himself has gone on record and basically echoing my comment confirming he thinks it's ridiculous as well. As far as Dream Theater is concerned, I think having Mike back in the band was a huge positive step. He is such a master musician and writer. I'm looking forward to the new stuff. Promise you it won't take a decade though.. LOL..

@@DecapitatedPlaythings That’s awesome you’ve been entrenched in music so long! And hopefully it won’t take DT too long! 🤘🏻🔥

He did not learn it on the spot. 5 1/2 and still did not play it correctly. Stop blowing smoke up his butt. He finally met his match as we all do.

The point is to see the progression and how younger drummers can see the process of learning such a complex tune. He still did an amazing job in such a short amount of time!
