I think the solution for this problem is High School not College. Too many High schools have been busy trying to prep kids for college and not the workforce. We need more career classes for these students to teach them to use their skills outside of High School. They cram allot of worthless classes on these students that serves no purpose on the outside world. Show these kids where the good money is really at and make their last 2 or three years of high school education tailored to that career. Also have more school to work like programs so they get a better idea of the job. This would bring back the value of high school education and not only will you graduate with a diploma you will also have a degree or certification. If you want to advance or change your career then there is college.

If no one signs up for the classes, how do the schools justify the cost of maintaining shop related training. Mediocre pay for clerical, and entry level positions is pushing many under grads to take skilled trades positions and they excel because they learn quickly and have no qualms about accepting a challenge.

All schools teach now is the leap test, because the school is graded on their scores.

Or better yet....apprenticeship! Book classes part of the day....on the job training *at* the desired job of each student! I have been homeschooling my children and my 14 year old son gets his book work done in the morning then often works at my dad's garage....he knows things about cars that most adults don't know! He is being prepared for this to be his job when he graduates! :)

Everyone paid attention to when he asked the most important question? "How did tuition get more expensive than energy, food, real estate, and health care?" And he hits it right on the money. Everyone is encouraged to go to college and the government will let anyone take all the money they need as a loan to pay back. Add with that you can get a degree for something absolutely useless and we have the current problem with higher education.

I agree...I'm a welder in AZ (non union) thank god. But I work in a 72 degree air conditioned shop and make almost 6 figures with zero school debt. Yes it took me 12 years to get here but I enjoyed every step of on the job training I had. Get your shit together boys....the skilled trades are where the cash is if you're simply willing to get off of your ass and build the shit only welders can build. Get an education that matters.... I went from the Marine Corps infantry from 2002-2006 (yes I went to Iraq) to a Safety Manager today. I make 6 figures and I'm dirty and tired every day. I sleep extremely well. By me gaining experience in construction over the years my options are pretty much unlimited in the realm of safety. How much did this education cost me in dollars? Like 3400 bucks in BCSP testing / tuition. I worked my ass off and studied when I saw an opportunity. I learned safety by working the trade then learning the regulations. Now 34 years old I'm almost done in my community college (cheap as hell) to get my AS in safety which will push my earnings to 150,000+ a year. I have over 6 years of experience in the field and am currently making 105,000 a year as a safety Manager for a construction company. I have Amazon, Colonial Pipe Line, CAT, and 3 major developers trying to snatch me up so I can come run their safety programs for insane amounts of salary. I'm not even done with a simple AS degree yet. While my profession isn't a trade as Mike describes it. I found myself in the trades and decided to educate myself on a subject I find awesome, safety. I have zero debt in the form of school loans, make great money and love my job. Sure I'm dirty and it can be stressful. But I love being dirty and I perform great under stress. The big paycheck helps too. On a side note, I'm not even the highest paid person I've run into. I've seen plumbers, electrical contractors, welders and other trades who make more than I do very frequently on the jobs I visit. I don't know what happened to work, as in working physically. Somewhere along the lines trade work became "uncool" or "below me". Now there is such a shortage that trade workers are making as much if not more than programmers at google or Facebook. As for me I'll take the open air, lunch in a box and overtime any day over sitting at Google smashing keys on salary working 14 hr days and having free lunch and nap pods, fuck that. I bet you agree :-)

I have NO college degree and still managed to make a whole he'll of a lot more money every year than my college educated in-laws and friends from high school and ALL of my college graduate over debt neighbors. When I graduated high school, I knew my parents did not have the money to send me to college. I applied to several schools after taking the SAT, but I graduated at the end of my JUNIOR YEAR. I hadn't heard from any of the schools I applied to, so at 17 and out of school I enlisted in the Corps. Did 6 years in a career field I wanted to do, but does not have any civilian carry over. After getting out of the Corps I went to a family reunion and saw some relatives in had not seen in about 10 years. Everyone asked what I was going to do since I got out of the military. I applied to several law enforcement agencies, but while waiting to hear from them my cousin suggested that I go to truck school. I did. The first 2 years were not that great for income. 3rd year and large national car hauler company was hiring in my area. The first 6 months I had to pay for my rooms out of my pocket. Then my probation period was over and the money started coming in. It was a union job, and I hated it. Did 5 years and left for a better job. NO union. Then I really was making a killing. In the 20 years I hauled cars my worst year, also firth year was $120,000. I'm now retired at 50.

Way back when (70's) we had to take aptitude test. Those who had better than average academic skills were steered down the higher education path. Those who did not fare so well academically were steered towards a vocational path. They stopped that practice in the 80's to our detriment.

The best statement from this was saying to make the acronym STEMS. If you have a job in just about any STEM field, you work side by side with a skilled person. Also, ore often than not people go back and forth between STEM jobs and skilled jobs at large manufacturing companies because they go hand and hand with each other.

The best way to go is to go to a Junior College first. Not many people realize that most four year college students DON'T finish college and shows nothing on their resume accept DEBT. If student went to a Junior college first they receive an AA degree and then can go to a four year college and start off as a junior which is more affordable . And when they graduate they now have both an AA degree and a BA degree which companies are impressed with.

You can still work in white collar jobs without going to college. It's actually preferable with many of these new tech jobs that aren't taught in college.

I work at an Amazon Warehouse, and this week a contracting crew started construction on a giant metal welded automated sorting machine that will replace 10% of workers. We get paid 14.25$ per hour. It's not enough. An avg of 3-5 hrs a day . It's not doable anymore. I need to find a different job. Something that offers me more continuity.

Bebe Speaks The same could be said for jobs that people went to college to get. How many middle managers get laid off every year when big companies down size. At least if you are a journeyman electrician, plumber, etc you c an do side jobs for cash. Just have to be careful the union does not find out and censor you, but at least you won't starve. Hard for a college educated middle manager to stand on the Sid elf the road with a sign "Will fill out TPS reports for food". College is becoming a scam. It is expensive and the payoff is getting less and less every year. With big companies wanting more B1 visas so they don't have to pay U.S. Citizens a fair wage and college tuition rising kids these days are screwed. Also tell me why an engineering student needs to take from 10 to 15 hours of humanities classes to graduate? Probably so some humanities teachers will have a job. Yep that Ancient Civilization class I took in college comes in handy occasionally when I am watching jeopardy. Unless you are going into a STEM field college is a money losing proposition .

They are missing one huge point: 9/10 carpenters who build houses are miserable. It's back-breaking slave labor. And If you live in a cold state like MN, you get to do it in below freezing weather 6 months out of the year! Other trades like masonry can be even worse.

I agree with everything Mike says about college is not for everyone, but the problem is is that people look at trade school as the only alternative to college. There's got to be other options in lifethat allow you to use your mind, rather than body. Trade schools are not for everyone either. Trade school is definitely one option, but it shouldn't be the ONLY option to college with making a living.

No on that note maybe school to start putting auto shops back in what shops back in maybe the metal shop in photography because I can tell you when all those programs are there I think it helps kids grow a great knowledge on how to do stuff themselves instead of throwing a more math classes science history maybe history should be taught more to make them learn actual history. But in the end I think we should start putting butter electors back in because I know when I was in school we are great ones like graphic arts wood shop Photography agriculture homework and metal shop but i out of those ones only one is around now and that is wood shop. We also had auto shop which is still there and agriculture which is coming back but not for the right reasons because if they don’t have an agricultural program they will lose the property

There are many more job opportunities where you can get paid while you learn. I know several plumbers who learned the basics in school, went out under the supervision of master plumbers to apply what they had learned the week before. They then went back to class and learned more advanced things and ... went out to use it in the field. I know electricians who did the same thing. All of those people are now mentoring people walking the steps they themselves took. Meanwhile, college educated people who see the vocational trades as beneath them are living hand to mouth for 5 to 10 years to pay off debt, if they even find work in an employee rich, job starved environment.

My son, who has a psychology/counseling degree went into debt for his degree. He paid for his school working as an HVAC tech at his university with training they provided. He's still working there as an HVAC tech after graduating. ??? Ummm...He can make more money as an HVAC tech than he can as a counselor. Does any of this seem insane to you?

This may have been published 2 years ago, it is so appropriate at this time, because Trump has been talking quite a bit about how millennials pay what $500,000 for a 4 year college strapping them into debt for a lifetime, taking classes and choosing majors that employers just aren't looking for, and finding out that jobs just aren't waiting for them and they will likely end up working at a fast food restaurants and living at home with their parents, which is hardly the dream they had in mind when they invested so much money. And, confidentially, they would be far better off never having gone to a 4 year college or university because they won't be exposed to the fascist, marxist professors who have infiltrated American Schools and will come out feeling less suppressed and far happier.

It would be great to stop saying people are not 'cut out' to go to college. The phrase works but it sounds like it is used to mean someone is not good enough. If you are going to say that then you should also say that college kids are not cut out to be tradesmen or laborers.

I'm a machinist with 20 years experience and a grade 9 education. I learned by thinking and getting yelled at. So many times I get new kids that paid $15 000 for a machinist certificate and don't know basics. They'll sit infront of the programming software and say, "train me". lol. I say, "theres the help section, try" Unfortunately pride in your work, willingness to learn, work, and ability to teach yourself are gone. So many kids ask, "what do I do?" . lol. This ain't McDonalds, you gotta think, thinking is part of the job. Hilarious they'll say, "impossible, can't do it". I come over and get it done

Free market. Work harder and smarter than immigrants. Last 10 years I've been the only one at work that isn't an immigrant. Why? Cause kids think they get a job making big money cause they bought a certificate. Rest of the world knows you gotta start at the bottom, get experience, and prove your worth more money
