On February 11, 1990, Mike Tyson fought James “Buster” Douglas in Tokyo, Japan for the heavyweight title. It was the tenth title defense for Mike Tyson who entered the fight unbeatable in the eyes of many boxing fans. Buster Douglas wasn't supposed to change anyone's mind either but when the world gave the 42 to 1 underdog 90 seconds, he took the fight into the tenth round.

Hey fun fact! Korakuen Stadium was actually demolished in 1988. This fight took place in what is now known as the Tokyo Dome but many at the time of this fight, including the original HBO broadcast, referred to the venue as Korakuen Stadium. I, too, am scared of change.

Tyson wouldn't have lost this fight if he had a corner and if he didn't have a bunch of yes men around him telling him he couldn't lose. Tokyo Douglas would've given almost any heavyweight in history a run for their money. He was motivated, in shape, and had the x-factor of inspiration to fight for his late mother. That's a hard combo to beat.
@Thor-Orion
@Thor-Orion 2 года назад
There was destiny running through his veins that night. James Douglas in Tokyo in February of 1990 was simply put the instrument of the boxing gods that night. He gets knocked down in the eighth and when he rises before Tyson can come in to finish off a clearly disorientated Douglas the bell rings to give Douglas a minute to get his head back on. EVERYTHING was on his side that night. And the way he fights in this match is almost like a mixture of Ali and Holmes. Stiff, hammering jab to lead off combinations and on the balls of his feet dancing around like he was floating. Setting up counter punches with lightning speed and supernatural timing. He starts to fade at 2 or 3 points in the fight and then all of a sudden he’s rejuvenated and back to tap dancing on Tyson’s face. This is my favorite boxing match ever.

I think Douglas himself addressed the slow count thing. He said he took as long as he could to rest, but that he definitely could've gotten up earlier if the count had been faster. And I think the video evidence shows as much - he's a lot more composed, and way less confused, than Tyson was when he hit the canvas.
@richardtheconquerer
@richardtheconquerer 4 года назад
Yeah, I never understood why people try to use that as an excuse. He can hear the count. It's smart to use it. Tyson on the other hand is clearly out of it. So much so that you could almost argue that he makes it up at 9 but the ref (who Tyson was basically leaning on) sees he can't really stand on his own and calls it
@TheLouHam
@TheLouHam 4 года назад
People who say that probably doesn’t understand that the ref count isn’t based in time. The ref uses that count to judge whether a boxer is conscious enough to keep on fighting. While Douglas was being counted, the ref can tell that he’s still all there. Exhausted, but still consciously awake. When Tyson was being counted, he was groggy, he can barely put his mouth piece back and was using the ref’s arm to balance himself while struggling to get up. That’s when the referee knew Tyson was done.

@StephenColbert27
@StephenColbert27 3 года назад
@@austinreed347 It's also one of those things that makes no sense. Tyson wastes a good second or two fumbling for the mouthpiece when he should just be focused on getting up, they can put the mouthpiece in once he's back on his feet. @austinreed347
@austinreed347 3 года назад
@@StephenColbert27 I don’t think Buster got as long as a count as Tyson thinks, I’m pretty sure Tyson said he was down for 13 seconds or something but he was counting really fast to prove that but still the Ref only needs to go to 10 and I think with the average count it was about 11 seconds

@@BoyDanny93 Perhaps you don't know boxing that well. Mike was very fragile, both mentally and emotionally due to a brutal and terrifying upbringing on the streets of Brownsville. Only a wise, supportive and disciplined man like Cus could have provided the stability and encouragement needed to turn Mike around and save him from a life of violent crime. It had to be Cus and it had to be Rooney too, himself being a youth rescued and molded by Cus. As to your question, Mike could not have been a great boxer without Cus' peek-a-boo style. This style allowed him to quickly step inside of the reach of much taller fighters without so much as getting touched, where he could throw deadly combinations and hurt the opponent with either hand. Remember that Mike is actually LEFT HANDED, but Cus didn't want him to fight in a southpaw stance. Instead gave him a right handed stance but more squared off... this style is so unique, it can only be considered a work of genius, and that genius' name is Cus D'amato.

For a name like WISDOM you don't know JACK. Immediately after the fight in the dressing room Don King went to Busters dressing room calling for a Disqualification. King didn't let up. He threatened Buster family. He kept Buster in civil litigation. He never let up. King had Buster going to court in the east coast then the west coast. He had no time to train. He spent so much time going to court from one end to another spending money on lawyers and plane tickets.He was mentally spent and hardly trained because of this he lost to Hollyfield. He had King playing his richman thug head games it broke Douglas.

Buster Douglas's Mom told the world before she died that her Son would knock out Mike Tyson. Buster didnt get up because of his training or because he wanted to, Buster got up because he NEEDED to. Ant McCall the Blue Jays’ championships were still more impactful culturally, on a national scale, because they won through pure skill. The Raptor’s championship was *in the finals* , based more on the Warriors crazy misfortune with injuries, rather than being the more skilled team. We wouldn’t have had a chance if KD(and Clay) stayed healthy.

6:30, Snowell himself addressed this mistake. It had nothing to do with overconfidence. _“I’m the cornerman and everything that goes wrong in the corner is all down to me and I accept full responsibility for a huge mistake on my part,” he laments. “It wasn’t like we didn’t respect Buster or that we thought he couldn’t make a mess of Mike’s face, it was just a mistake and we were careless. It was the first and last time it happened to me as a trainer, but suggestions that we just didn’t think we needed one is crazy talk from jealous people.”_
