Mike Tyson faces his best opponent to date in "The Boogieman" Jesse Ferguson. Tyson was pushed passed the 4th round for the first time in his last fight against Mike Jameson and Ferguson was going to push him even further again in this fight. More info below...
Jesse Ferguson was a late comer to the professional boxing scene turning pro in 1983 at 25 years of age. He won his first 10 fights with ease which included a 3rd round TKO of Reggie Gross 1984. In 1985 Ferguson was picked to compete in the ESPN Eastern Heavyweight tournament dispatching Richard Scott in 4 rounds and then 2 months later earned a majority decision against James "Buster" Douglas. In the finals of the tournament Ferguson knocked out former USA Michigan State Heavyweight champion, Tony Anthony, which also earned him a world ranking for the first time in his career. Unfortunately Ferguson lost his next fight against Carl "The Truth" Williams when he was TKO'd in the 10th round after putting Williams on the canvas twice. Ferguson bounced back with an easy decision win against unknown Oscar Holman in his next fight for a record of 14-1 with 10 KO's.
Mike Tyson was 17-0 with all his wins by way of KO. Tyson had not fought any truly talented opposition however so Ferguson was without a doubt his toughest opponent to date. Tyson was now the hottest prospect in boxing at the time the fans loved his all action style.
Tyson was all over Ferguson in the first round and had him pinned up against the ropes for most it. Although Ferguson landed a few good shots from out of his block it didn't really phase Tyson who never backed off. Tyson kept up the body attack in round 2 and was doing the same in round 3 when he was caught by a good flurry from Ferguson, arguable the biggest shots Tyson had taken at this point in his career. In round 4 Ferguson started to lead with his head when going into clinches and was warned by the ref but Ferguson also claimed Tyson was hitting him low. Both Tyson and Ferguson threw big shots after the bell to end the round and the ref had to get in between them to avoid a brawl. In round 5 Ferguson went for broke and came out snapping his jab which was keeping Tyson at bay but eventually Tyson was able to push Ferguson back into the ropes and kept him there throwing some of the biggest shots of the fight so far including some solid body combos. Tyson started landing uppercuts through Ferguson's block late in the round, one of which broke Ferguson's nose and another which knocked him down. Ferguson was up at 8 and Tyson went to town on him almost forcing a TKO stoppage but somehow Ferguson survived. In the 6th round (which is not featured sorry) Ferguson started holding Tyson for extended periods of time and was refusing to let go so the ref had no choice but to disqualify Ferguson (although the result was latter changed to a TKO at the request of Tyson's management).
Unfortunately the loss to Tyson was just the start of a steady declined for Ferguson. Over the next 7 years he lost to James Smith, Anders Eklund, Orlin Norris, Oliver McCall, Bruce Seldon, Michael Dokes and Tony Tubbs. In 1993 however Ferguson was picked to face Ray Mercer, who was being lined up to face WBA Champion, Riddick Bowe. Mercer was expected to knock Ferguson out however much to every-bodies surprise Ferguson out-boxed Mercer over the whole 10 rounds to win by unanimous decision. As a result, Ferguson with his 19-9 record, was given a shot at the WBA World Heavyweight title and although he came prepared and was in the best condition of his boxing career, Ferguson was stopped in 2 rounds by Riddick Bowe. What followed was another series of losses and although Ferguson had a brief run of success agian in 1996 and 1997 which earned him a shot at USBA and IBF Inter-Continental Heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman, he ended up losing a very one sided 12 round decision. Ferguson's last win was an upset split decision against Obed Sullivan in December of 1998 but then lost to Andrew Golota in January 1999 prompting Ferguson to finally retire with a 26-18 record.
Tyson had been pushed in his last 2 fights and went beyond the 4th round for the first times in his career. As Tyson took a step up in competition it appeared some flaws were slowly starting to show through in Tyson's style although nobody had yet come close to beating him.

Mike tyson said in a recent podcast that Jesse Ferguson was one of his toughest opponents he said you'd need to shoot him to get rid of him. Respect
@Hybred
@Hybred Год назад
Notice how he said that instead of one of the people he lost to. Mostly because his losses were a result of him slacking rather than his opponent being significantly more skilled. This guy fought prime Mike Tyson the others (fights after 86) fought a demotivated Tyson. After he won the title for his former deceased coach he just gave up the relentless training, partied too much. I understand that though, maintaining to be the best of the best is hard especially after you're rich and you started when you're hungry, and your motivator/mentor is dead.

Tyson's switch hitting was amazing. The ease with which he moved from orthodox into the southpaw stance was effortless. Did it against Pinklon Thomas and when he KO'ed Trevor Berbick. Other fighters who did that well were Chiquita Gonzales when he knocked down Michael Carbajal and James Toney did it against Michael Nunn and Jason Robinson.
@prettyboy1970
@prettyboy1970 2 года назад
It was instinct. Tyson is really lefthanded. He had to be retrained to fight ortodox.
@dazdavis7896
@dazdavis7896 7 месяцев назад
He DOESNT switch from orthodox to southpaw. The announcer doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He stands completely squared up when he has you agaisnt the ropes like that, then he can just lean either way and fire and a short uppercut like he always does when has you on the ropes or in a corner.
@dazdavis7896
@dazdavis7896 7 месяцев назад
@@prettyboy1970No, Tyson is NOT “left-handed”.. that is a lie; idk where that even came from. He is right-handed. He writes with his right hand, he does literally everything right-handed.. His hardest punch was his overhand right. Be it from punch range or short & inside. The overhand right or the uppercut from either hand. Those were his KO punches. He landed left hook KO’s because ppl were so worried about gettin hit with the big overhand right from hell they left themselves open on their right side and he fired it off.

Look how excited the crowd is. I've never seen a crowd so hungry. It's savage the way they watch Tyson devour his opponent. I remember for me, the first Tyson fight I watched was when I was 7 years old and he fought Peter Mcneeley. It was the first time I'd ever seen a boxing match on TV. I'd never seen anything like it. Little did I know I was watching a post-prison Mike Tyson, who was still a legendary fighter. For the people that got to watch these early fights though, that's something special. That's Tyson.

@Sloth h What are you talking about? Every boxers first and/or second year of their pro are always the most active. The reason fighters aren't active as much after that is because they start getting bigger fights or became champions, which require well organized Arenas and big promotions to bring big money in, and in which they take some time.Anthony Joshua fought three times at the very end of 2013 twice in October and once in November. In 2014 he fought 7 times with only two months apart the longest. Even Mike Tyson started to fight less going in to 1986 13 fights to 1987 4 fights fights after becoming champion.
@robertcatania1120
@robertcatania1120 Год назад
that was all part of Cus D'Amato's plan, keep him active and out of trouble. He fought every 2-3 weeks for the first year or so with the goal always being to make him the youngest heavyweight champion of all-time. Which would break the record held by one of Cus's previous champions Floyd Patterson. Say what you want about Tyson's career, but had Cus and Kevin Rooney been around longer he would have had a much different outcome then the downspiral it took.

The boxing world was still wondering if Tyson had a chin or not in his 18th fight. Turns out that he had one of the best chins in heavyweight history. The beating he took vs Douglas with an incompetent corner was insane.
@williamljonesjr6695
@williamljonesjr6695 11 месяцев назад
Correct, Tyson was absolutely mauled in that fight also what gets overlooked is that Tyson didn’t give up, he kept trying a sign of a true warrior
@jrayner21679
@jrayner21679 11 месяцев назад
@@williamljonesjr6695 yeah, I watched that fight the other night, I hadn’t seen it in a minute. Douglas had everything going for him that night. His mom passing away motivated him. His mentality was on point, he was in shape and when he wanted to be he was very skilled. He was pumping out a hard jab. He was hitting in the clenches and he was doing all the things Tyson used to do to others. You can see Tyson’s immaturity in the corner though he looks like a lost 12 year old boy. Rooney was always straight with him, he never stroked his ego that was good for him. And he genuinely cared for him. I think the absolute best Tyson is the Reggie Gross fight. He got hit a couple times and then a second later, he was doing nasty head movement before landing a nasty left hook.

@@jrayner21679 yes I remember that Reggie Gross fight.. Tyson was literally standing in front of him bobbing his and weaving and Reggie was still missing a lot

Iron Mike Tyson was unbeatable in his early days when he was with thoes who really loved him. Later in his career he believed"The Lie" that he was unbeatable and he left to go with devils who wanted $$$! Pride...lack of serious training, substance abuse...etc. took out Iron Mike! No fighter beat Iron Mike! Mike beat Iron Mike!! Had he stayed with Cusses corner he could have been another Rocky Marciano! BUT...to me Mike...your #1! Good bad or indifferent! Thanks for the memories Champ!! 🏆❤ 🥊🥊👍🏻😉

Two absolute battlers here eh? Ferguson was hard as nails, this was a young fit dynamic destroyer Tyson, pre Berbick and pre ‘settling down’ as an experienced pro. He was more dangerous at this time and more eager to destroy than anyone I’ve seen except a young hungry Foreman. What a handful tyson was at this time. But Ferguson was great to put up the fight he did with this version of Tyson. 💥🥊

Small ring, but it's impressive how Mike IMMEDIATELY backed Jessie into the corner, within 5 or 6 seconds. Footwork, head movement, and jab: flawless. Ferguson landed some wicked uppercuts from the ropes, but Mike was supremely well conditioned and they had no effect. Was this fight televised on public TV? I think it was....

It's rather interesting that in his earlier stages of his career Mike moved his head a lot more and was more agile with his footwork. I don't know if it was his age that got to him or other things that happened in his personal life but in his later fights he doesn't really bob and weave his head that much.
