Thanks so much for the Black Arsenal feature. I was also at Goodison Park the day that Amy spoke about, I think about that day often and although it was decades ago it was the moment I was proudest to be an Arsenal supporter. We didn't win a trophy that day but as a unified club and support it was something to be so proud of, our response was fury - channeled the (wright)right way. Davis Rocastle Thomas was my favourite midfield ever.
What a podcast!!!! This really hit home for me as a black londoner. Instantly purchased the book! Thank you Tayo, Femi, Eddie and Amy for such amazing insights. Thank you Andrew for sharing your platform. This was done perfectly
I'm sorry to say this, because I love him as much as every other Arsenal fan does, but Ian Wright has a part to play in why sections of England "fans" treat Ben White the way they do. He was the one who wrote in his newspaper column "The next young player who says he does not want to play for England should be ordered to ring the parents of a soldier who has died serving his country in Afghanistan, and tell them his reasons", and it took off and spread like wildfire. It's the complete and utter wrong comparison to make. Let's not forget, as much as we love the game of football, it is just that: a GAME, that in the grand scheme of things, means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Playing football for your country IS NOT the same thing as fighting an ACTUAL WAR while RISKING YOUR LIFE and FIGHTING FOR OUR FREEDOM in military service. I can almost guarantee you that if you went up to a soldier and made that comparison to him/her, they'd be offended by the mere insinuation that the two things are even remotely alike, because they aren't. Playing football for your country is not compulsory or an obligation that you MUST accept. If Ben White chooses not to make himself available for selection, then what business is that of any of ours? He owes absolutely nobody an explanation for his actions, and I'm sorry, but as much of a hero he is for everyone of an Arsenal persuasion, Ian Wright has to take some responsibility for this kicking off the way it has. The comparison is actually quite disrespectful. But Arsenal are also easy headlines for the tabloid "journalists", so it's easy to jump on the bandwagon. I don't remember there being any fuss when Paul Scholes CHOSE to stop playing for England after Euro 2004. It's the player's choice. You ARE NOT owed an explanation. PLAYING football for your country IS NOT the same as FIGHTING A WAR, and if you think it is, then YOU are part of the problem. Ian Wright should issue an apology to Ben White.
@@kunimitsune177 I never said that Ian Wright was a prat, I just said he’s wrong about this, and that he should apologise to Ben White. Something I stand by
Everyone seems to be writing Jorginho off...but he had a good run for us last season. I think we should go Jorginho in Rice's role, Partey sitting deeper and Havertz in the 10 role with Jesus upfront.
No RIce and now the international break injuries; I'm suddenly not looking forward to the NLD at all. We should still have enough to take it but it could be a tough match. Would be great to see Raheem do something magic.
Andrew (& James)! When you 'dropped' the anvil joke did you EVER think you'd be starting a 'new' Interlull 'hoodoo' ?!?!?!?😂 I was biking into work the a.m. [here in the intermountain west-U.S.] following Øde's catastrophe and listening to your 'cast... I was laughing/crying (just the former, but can you script your joke ANY more presciently???). Don't worry - I remain a dedicated (not Patreon level yet) listener of you & James & your delightful pod. Play on and keep the great material flying (sans anything that'll injure the boys). Gratitude!
It's not perfect at Arsenal. We know how hard it was for Paul Davis as a player but it's infuriating that despite being qualified he was overlooked by Liam Brady for a perm coaching job with the role given to someone without any qualifications (Steve Bould). Disappointed that David Dein never investigated this incident.
@@calvinwade2751he is already training again and showing no signs of discomfort from his ankle. He has told Arteta he's ready to play vs Spurs so over the next 48hrs they will make a decision. Arteta is a psychology monster and play on the media created doubt.
