Mikhail Gorbachev receives the Freedom of Dublin and takes a walk around the Liberties.
On the second day of a two visit to Dublin, former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev is granted the Freedom of the City of Dublin. He also took a wander around The Liberties and met some of the retailers and locals.
Mr Gorbachev was getting a real feel for Dublin city with an informal walkabout in the Liberties.
On receiving the freedom of the city, Mikhail Gorbachev said that he fully intended to exercise his newly acquired right to graze sheep in the city. During the ceremony, the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Michael Mulcahy, said Mr Gorbachev’s name was synonymous with the quest for greater freedom.
Mikhail Gorbachev also paid a visit to President Mary McAleese at Áras an Uachtarain and met members of the Russian community at the Hugh Lane Gallery. Later, he attended a private dinner at the Mansion House.
