Going to be honest here: that relationship has some foundation issues. I worked as a manger full time while going to college and just graduated (11 years) debt free. My wife (girlfriend back then) had a full ride and I wanted to make sure she graduated without worrying about housing. We loved in a 700 square foot apartment for $650. She worked at Toy R US overnights and helped with utilities. We both grew up in the ghetto but knew the debt wasn’t the way to go and being teachers was our way out. For me I make as much as I did as a store manager as I do teaching but with better work life. It takes communication and supporting others when they have nothing. I try to better our future and give the world to my wife. She supported me through my darkest hours. We will have our first home in 2021 with 20% down. Again communication and goals. This relationship seems odd to me.

Maybe he was getting too comfortable and taking advantage of her. It’s exhausting being in a relationship with someone you’re not even married to that isn’t contributing anything financially whilst you’re going to work every day to keep a roof over both of your heads and get food on the table particularly when you didn’t even discuss that dynamic beforehand. It’s one thing when you agree to one person leaving work to take over labour at home, it’s another thing entirely for someone to become unemployed and not make gainful steps towards getting another job

As a husband that lost his job(and rehired again very recently), I can relate to the boyfriend. I applied to hundreds of places and barely heard back from a handful of places and the interviews were very competitive with so many candidates. With federal $600 unemployment, I was making less than what I used to, but still made more than my wife and without $600, I still made a decent amount, but not something you could survive on in this area. But of course, that didn't stop my wife from occasionally thinking I'm a bum despite the number of applications, reaching out to recruiters, network and so on. So I'll give the benefit of the doubt to the boyfriend to find a decent job when this whole thing is over. In the meanwhile, he should do his best to do some education or possibly work from home part time for supplemental income.

I am currently a teacher in Oklahoma, so I can actually offer a little bit of perspective on teacher wages in this scenario: Before the teacher walkouts, the $34,000 salary WAS pretty much unlivable for the vast majority of working teachers. Even though the cost of living is extremely cheap here, I can tell you that most teachers I knew were either living with parents or with multiple roommates. Between the student loan debt and the low wages, we ALL had multiple jobs in order to keep a roof over our heads. At the time, moving to Dallas ensured that many of us could just... teach and have our own apartments. I will say that after the walkouts, teachers in the state got a raise between $8-10,000. Things are MUCH better here now, and many teachers I know are now living a better existence.

Ok! So in Texas during the summer your utility bill is going to be super super high (at least where I live in Texas), because it gets to 110 degrees outside usually. In my tiny apartment utilities are normally $60 a month, but then during the summer it's like $150 because you have to run the AC all the time. Once my AC broke and within an hour my apartment was 90 degrees inside. AC is life or death during the summer in Texas. If I'm out in that 110 degree weather for more than 2 hours I start to get a massive migraine. And heat stroke is very real threat in Texas.

The unemployment you get is based off of how much you have contributed to the unemployment insurance. In Nevada the max weekly benefit is 469, but some people make as low as 145$ a week depending on what their specific benefit is, and the extra 600 was only for a short period of time. I have a lot of coworkers who didn’t qualify even though we have the same position because of many other factors. That’s not to mention that because it’s an insurance you only have a certain amount of money in your benefit, my partners money ran out in September. Also, Nevada has one of the highest max benefit numbers, in some states the max is as low as 250$.
