Moments after referee Mills Lane stopped the fight & DQed Mike Tyson for biting off a piece of Evander Holyfield's ear, Lane stepped out of the ring and had a strong reaction to questions about why he stopped the fight. People inside the MGM Grand Garden couldn't see the ear bites so there were a lot of questions. Fight Doctor Ferdie Pacheco also weighs in on the insanity. Ethan Forhetz interviews them for KVBC in Las Vegas.

@Xavier_the_Boxing_Nerd
@Xavier_the_Boxing_Nerd 5 лет назад
@@danedgar1539, I think you are getting to much into the semantics of what he said. The interview happened right after the fight and Mills' had just finished DQ'ing Tyson and I personally think that when he said "it" he meant all of the potential headbutts. The difficulty in referring any of Holyfield's fights is in the fact that the ref must understand that the nature of Holyfield's fight plan involves getting to where his opponent wants to get before he gets there and that this doesn't necessarily mean that he wanted to headbutt his opponent.

Holyfield mastered head butting but then you butt him back, not bite and sever his ears multiple times...Mike could have got even by hitting low, head butting back, hitting after the bell, elbowing etc...lots of ways to let another boxer know they are fighting dirty and you will retaliate...Mike chose the dumbest thing to do, mainly because HE WANTED to get disqualified as to not be knocked out again...I love mike but he fucked up in the Holyfield fights.

@christiansmith1389
@christiansmith1389 Год назад
It was a huge fight - arguably the most anticipated of 1997. To stop such a huge fight three rounds in would’ve likely led to chaos. Lane consulted with the doctor who said Holyfield was good to continue, laid down the law to Tyson, and gave him a two-point deduction. A pretty fair and just punishment. After he bit him a second time, Lane made good on his promise and stopped the fight.
@JohnSmith-zw8vp
@JohnSmith-zw8vp Год назад
@@christiansmith1389 I must not have known much about boxing back then (or even now for that matter) but losing two points seemed like a slap on the wrist as I didn't quite get how the whole scoring/judging thing worked. As a matter of fact (as I learned the first time I saw the Rocky movies) the points/scoring only matters if the fight "goes the distance"...that doesn't really happen all that often does it?

Mills Lane is an outstanding person. No bullshitting around, straight to the point, hard but fair. He should have ran for gouveneur but i think he didnt because he would have see the reality worse than he'd expected it might be. As a judge you either decide to speak the law to everybody and then you HAVE to stay out of politics, or you just play their game. Maybe he would have been the right one to fuck that sump up and dry it out, we will never know. Absolutely outstanding person to me and his fights were always well refereed at any time. Thank you Mr. Lane for your determination towards the sport and towards society. We need more of your kind thats a fact.
