Milwaukee vs Dewalt: 18g brad nailer trim job

We're back with another video. Visiting a job I worked at earlier in the year, I'm back to pick up where the homeowners left off, focusing on the upstairs trim in order to get it done by Christmas.
I swap back and forth between a milwaukee 18 gauge nailer and a dewalt 18 gauge nailer. Guess which one is better.
Enjoy!

Depends on what you’re firing into- if you’re hitting in pine all day, every day and you already have Milwaukee, then yes, the Milwaukee gun will be good for you. If you’re shooting into white oak or maple then the DeWalt is a must. The Milwaukee will sit it flush, mostly, but you’ll have to set every nail to be able put fill/putty in. DeWalt can fully sink a 2” pin into a solid piece of wood. DeWalt’s wind up isn’t for speed, it’s for power.

Dewalt is still on his first generation while Milwaukee is on the second generation. Milwaukee's first gen was probably one of the worst brad nailers ever made. So, if the first gen of Dewalt is still giving a fight to the second gen of Milwaukee, that's good in my book.
@zackcrafted
@zackcrafted 2 года назад
That's a good point, I should have emphasized that more. Not only are you stacking technology with a 5 year gap but also the fact that Milwaukee has taken two attempts to get the gun I'm using, whereas DeWalt has stuck with the first gen for longer. All that to say... i'll buy Dewalts second gen when it comes out for sure ;)

Appreciate it, this was helpful. BTW, set you camera into manual focus with a higher aperture number, like an f11 or even f18 so you have a larger depth of view/focus so we your camera will stop the constant autofocus pull. Have a great day!

Oh that’s helpful! I’ve struggled with that. I actually ended up selling that camera to get a one that has better auto focus.. but maybe manual is the way to g

I love both brands a lot I did get dewalt 1st as my tools then got into Milwaukee I have both of these I’m not going to lie they are both really good finish nailers idk if it’s cuz of age on his dewalt or battery size but my dewalt 15 16 18 gauge never had them get jammed I have the Milwaukees walked out the store used it and the 1st day no problems but over time it has jammed on me a hell of a lot more then dewalt I like the no wind up and the smooth discharge of the nails and if that little red rubber thing falls off the gun your out of commission until you get another it will not shoot with it off just so you know I lost it once and it wouldn’t shoot and I couldn’t put my finger on it until someone pointed it out

FYI, if you're on a budget, I do recommend the Ryobi 18g. It's smooth and a great quiet workhorse! Had it for 4 years, use it quite frequently, and still going. Ryobi has been putting out great stuff and I'm a Dewalt fan.

I have the Milwaukee just over a year now and I don't know how many thousands of nails I have used and it is awesome. By the way I have never had a misfire or a nail not sunk.
@zackcrafted
@zackcrafted 2 года назад
Good to hear how its performing for more then a year. I recently just used a new deWalt 18g on a job, and it did perform better then the one I have, so I know age and use does play a factor. But still, with having used that new DeWalt, the milwaukee just felt and preformed better
@rickyperkins232
@rickyperkins232 2 года назад
@@zackcrafted the other thing that I forgot to mention is I use small battery with it, I leave it on all day and I probably get 2-3 days use out of it. I don't know if that's the norm with all brad nailers but it works so well I only carry 1 battery that size
@zackcrafted
@zackcrafted 2 года назад
@@rickyperkins232 oh thats nice too. Yea, turning the milwaukee on and off took a bit of getting use to, but i guess you save on draining it faster that way. And i wonder if the DeWalt motor consumes more power to whir up to speed. Maybe my next trim job I'll justify the Milwaukee purchase ;)

Did you try on bump fire? Maybe you misfired. I had a dewalt for over a year. No problem. Yo don’t have to wait from the rev up time.
@zackcrafted
@zackcrafted 2 года назад
I've only tried the bump mode once or twice, more so when I needed quicker firing speed. I've owned the gun for probably close to 5 years, before it came to major hardware stores where i live, so it doesn't owe me anything, and having just bought a new 16g, I can tell that maybe my older one is just showing signs of wear and tear.

How do they do after 2,000 nails? Are they still clean shots? Because my Milwaukee doesn't like Dewalt 2" nails it's jams allot and it makes a hole next to the nail. I shoot it around 1,200 nails and I don't like the way it starts behave.
@zackcrafted

Ya I’ve found the brand of nail matters a lot, I’ve had lot with porter cable nails. The deWalt has maybe 10k nails put through it over the years and it’s loosing some efficiency, I’d say every 10th nail doesn’t sink properly, keep it mind I haven’t had it serviced yet!

I have found that the brand matters, I used Porter Cable for this job, a cheaper brand aren’t machined with as much accuracy I think, so jambs or more common. Could also be a bent tip or something! Last result is to get it serviced I guess

@@AnontheGOAT Actually, I have both as well. I just removed both batteries, and all staples. The Milwaukee weighs only 1 ounce heavier than the dewalt. The reason the Milwaukee feels lighter, is because it’s better balanced, and I think more compact.

@zackcrafted
@zackcrafted Год назад
Hey, I’m using 2” if it’s going through drywall and 1”1/2 going into the door jambs. Holds good! I’d recommend 16g for any real wood trim, as it expands, contracts, and is a little more unpredictable then mdf Someone’s I use both depending on the application
