I can see I now need to get serious about the mobile apps! Wowsers - I'm astounded at how all the features have made their way there. I totally understand your enthusiasm for the mobile workflow.
Great video as always! Your enthusiasm and energy/excitement about the opportunities for mobile photography and workflow really shine through in this video - just as they did when I met you briefly in real life! 😀
Cards be gone ...!! And..and I thought smartphones only had a poor man's JPG ! ,but they actually have RAW !! After your video I lay in bed dazed and confused (no , not from the booze ) and thought this changes everything !! No longer messing about with cards and stuff, but when you go out and when you come back they are waiting for you backed up and all ! .No more bags and sore shoulders and the workflow is incredible ! A new dawn , a new day indeed ! Thank , thank you !!
@@glyndewis Could you spare a minute to explain something to me? Exposure control when I take a photo with my iPhone 14 pro: Do I reduce the exposure in the camera app or can Lr just do it all anyway (if a scene has very bright areas)?
Glyn, yet another amazing video. Since catching your presentations on Virtual Lightroom, you have become my #01 for RU-vidr for photography, your presentation style is infectious. As a iPhone, iPad user along with Lightroom and Photoshop, I cannot wait to try expanding my use of this kit.
Another great video Glyn. Thank you for taking the time to produce such good videos to help us improve our photography skills. Hope you have a great 2023.
@@glyndewis another great video and a demonstration yet again that quality is accessible through totally different means in this modern age. I must admit I have all the equipment you have and all the same software installed but yet I never take advantage of this situation when I should. Do you use an Apple Pencil Glyn???
Great stuff Glyn. I must play with Photoshop on my IPad. The blending option really appeals. I use both HDR and Long Exposure options in Lightroom Mobile. I feel justified now in switching predominately to my IPhone 13 when out and about. Best wishes Ray
Thank you. I’ve never come to grips with LR or PS Mobile for lack of an easy to find, step by step tutorial series on how to use them, let alone how to coordinate them with the desktop version. Maybe this will prod me awake.
That export is a neat trick! One tip, I find it easier, though counter intuitive, to leave the mask on the added layer white, brush OUT with black the areas I want to keep, THEN invert the mask. It’s easier to see what I’m doing.
Very well explained. I have taught this kind of workflow for my local camera club, in workshops I run on Lightroom and associated subjects. You've done it so well I don't think I'll need to bother in future!
Just a thought… instead of creating a preset, you could copy the edits from the first image and paste the edits onto the other images. Tap on the 3 dots in the top right of the edit screen. There’s a Copy Settings menu. It works the same as the presets, but it’s just temporary. Tap each of the other images and then Paste settings. Another thought :) You can use old wired earbuds as a shutter remote. I have the iPhone 12 Pro Max and use earbuds that have the lightning plug. Works like a charm - and also handy for selfies.
Thanks Carol. I'm collecting presets that I make at themoment so this was added in. ASlso was tempted (and did) buy an Apple Watch which works great as a remote trigger ... loveit beciase I don't need to remember to bring it or plug anything in.
I really appreciate this. I have an Phone 14 Pro plus LR installed on it yet rarely dive into the power of that app. I shall endeavour to do more with it in 2023!
Thanks for these insights Glyn - I'd forgotten about LR being able to sync across all my devices, and have just been using iPhone built in app. I shall change tout suite!
I absolutely love editing on my iPad. It means I can sit in a coffee shop and edit my photos and when I get home they’re sat waiting for me. It really is the future and makes photography lots more fun
@@glyndewis a funny little thing, but what really made all the difference was purchasing the Apple Pencil it felt more interactive and natural working with the photos
Thanks for the video and confirming I’m not nuts. This Fall I went to Canada for Fall Color and ONLY took my iPhone 14 and iPad. Didn’t regret it! Traveled light. Hiking was a joy and got everything I hoped for.
Definitely not nuts Charles; this is going to be the norm sooner than later IMO and that I find VERY exciting. I’m planning a road trip around North Wales and intend to do the same … only taking my iPhone, iPad and Tripod 👍
Thank you Sandy. Re the iPad I have the M2 iPad Pro 12.9" It's a real workhorse for me ... so much I can do with it. Tethering, writing, a 2nd display when doing LIVE broadcasts / presentations, watch films etc when away. I can also plug in external Hard Drive, Ethernet and more with a hub I have for it. It's so many things in 1.
@@glyndewis Thank you, that's a real workhorse. I have the regular iPad, but when I need a new one I will consider it. I will save your reply so I don't forget. Really appreciate your help.
You have made me more excited about using my phone, especially when travelling. Less lens etc. now thinking about upgrading my iPad. Which do you recommend without braking the bank? Great video BTW. You just get better and better. Thanks
Great video, your enthusiasm is contagious!. I love using my Samsung tablet for editing.. only can't do the photoshop bit. Seems I can do everything thing else though which is great. So will you be seeing your "big" camera equipment anytime soon?🤔
Amazing video 😇 You have just opened a new door toward my perception of editing/👍 This was what lacking from me often as switching the pc to edit many times dragged me for unknown reasons 😔 I was just thinking to try to do some tab editing as the cell phone screen is very small and not fitting the bill. I would be pivoting to your way of editing by getting a tab 🤗 thanks a ton 🙏
Thank you for showing the potential which lies in our phones! Some things I wonder about. Do you need a ND filter for long exposures on an iPhone? Do you shoot in Apple Raw? Do you shoot und 12 MP or 48 MP?
Hi There. To answer your questions, I always shoot in Raw and have never felt the need to use ND filters with the phone; there is always so much information / detail I can bring out in Lightroom Mobile it’s not necessary
Great photo and great tutorial as always. In the video you tell that the library in LR Mobile/CC syncs automatically with your LR Classic. How do you do that? TIA best regards Morten
Absolutely superb mate, amazing workflow, love how it all synchs together. Excellent presentation once again, thanks for sharing. 😎😎😎 Having never used Photoshop on an I-pad, I presume all the functions carried out on the keyboard can be done by tapping the appropriate tool? Have to ask, as I know my students will! If it OK with you buddy, I'll share this video with them. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great tutorial, Is there a work around with Photoshop mobile to use with out a keyboard on iPad ? Seems like the shortcut menu shows the shortcuts by using a keyboard only
Nice video again Glyn👍 Can you auto align on the iPad app? Just had a new iPad for Christmas, great little thing. Although it may make my purchase of a new iMac difficult 🤣🤣
Fantastic video Glyn, just what I was looking for! A couple of questions… do you shoot in RAW, do you keep these images on your phone (they do take up quite a bit of space) or do you delete them, and also which iPad are you currently using? I may need to upgrade my iPad as I’ve had it for a number of years. Thanks so much!!
Hi Thelma … thanks for watching the video. To answer your questions, yeah I shoot in Raw. Once I have edited an image I tend to then remove the files I don’t want / need from the phone. I tend to keep them in case in case I end up doing a tutorial, but if that wasn’t the case I’d just delete them. As for my iPad I have the new M2 iPad Pro 12.9” with 1TB of storage. I also have an extremely small and portable 2TB SSD hard drive that I use with it.
Thanks for your speedy reply Glyn, I’m looking forward to experimenting with this. Your attention to detail and professionalism is top tier in my book. Happy New Year!
Really awesome! I have the IPhone 13 pro max and also have the SmallRig kit. In addition I purchased the SmallRig 52mm filter holder, only to realise that it is a magnetic holder. So now I have to attach my NISI variable ND with prestic. Not the best solution but hey. One thing I will go and try is to use Lightroom mobile as my photography app. I see so many people buying expensive smart phones because of their ability to take beautiful photos. The sad part they use it as a point and shoot camera. If they only know what the phone can do combines with the most appropriate shooting and editing app. Thank you for sharing! I will now go out and try it out myself. Looking forward to your next video!
Glyn, this video and the Bridge of Wales video absolutely blew my mind! I've long been like you were, thinking pics on my iPhone were limited to just snaps. But, with the 14 Pro Max, a new iPad Air, and the Lr and Ps apps on board, I am really rethinking this. Of course, my Canon Mirrorless kit will still be my wedding kit, but for most everything else I shoot, I can see the iPhone giving my kit a decent run for the money. One question: I do not have a keyboard for my iPad Air; How much trouble is it to do things like invert the mask, and is there a good resource you know of that will show me the ins and outs in more depth? Thanks for all you do!
Hi Kevin ... YOu'd be fine without a keyboard; the inverty mask and such are all do-able from within a menu in Photoshop on the iPad. I'm looking to do some more Photoshop and Lightroom on the iPad tutorials so will keep you posted.
Amazing. Do you have a video that talks about the cost of the kit, both on the move and in the office, that you used in this video. It would be great to know how much it would cost to set up like you have.
The sneers I used to get when using my phone camera in a group of photographers laden with heavy equipment are diminishing. Still use DSLR but must say phone photography is where my interest lies.
nice tuto. I love this workflow but my main concern with LRC and LR mobile is the easiest way to clean my mobilephone. I created a dedicated folder in LRC to receive images from iphone. My iphone is full and i want to clean it. Because iphone and LRC are synchronized, i don't know how to delet images from iphone without deleting them from my hard disk. So i created another folder in LRC, stop synchro, move all images from synchronized folder to this new folder, delete all images from DCIM folder in iphone and restart synchro in LRC. Is it the correct way ?
My pixel 6 pro takes decent shots, but nothing that I'd say is mind blowing in quality. I can't crop any shot really without it looking low Res / over processed by the phone. When I zoom in 100% it looks crap. It is however better image quality than it used to be and smartphones have become certainly more relevant in the photography space since their inception, but I can't personally agree with you whole heartedly since doing my own comparisons.
Is it possible to take a 48mp dng thru Lightroom yet?? I read a few weeks back this wasn’t an option yet, the max was 12mp! I now take a raw image with the standard camera and import it in Lightroom!
I really wanted to embrace using iPad for photography but found (back when the first iPad Pro came out) and still find it to be too tedious and limiting. I still use LR on iPad, but IMHO Adobe needs to work on better "workflow". For example, on a recent family trip overseas, I found it incredibly frustrating when I loaded a few dozen shots from my Canon onto the iPad and later, when I went to edit them so I could export and share, I found that most of the shots had been replaced with "Smart" previews as the original files had been uploaded to the cloud. So while I could still work on the edits, I would either have to re-import with the wifi off to prevent upload to the cloud, or just wait till I got home to export files at the original resolution once the cloud files had synced to my desktop. Also, the inability to stitch panos or HDR merge, lack of the calibration panel and, as you showed here, the tedious method of loading several composite frames into Photoshop are all further reasons why I just don't even bother most of the time.
I guess as this is still in its infancy we need to give Adobe time to implement more and more. The Smart Previews I find works well .. quick and also minimum space taken up but as for the other functions such as pano, HDR, importing images … it’ll come in time just as they did originally in PS but this will happen sooner than later. Have you submitted feature requests into Adobe via the apps? If you take a look at what’s new and what’s coming, the list of functionality gets more and more.
I once had an opportunity to ask a world renowned adventure photographer, ‘what’s the best camera I can buy for £500?’ The answer, without hesitation, came back as ‘an iPhone’.
A brilliant video with lots of useful ideas and tips, many thanks for that. One question, though: when you export the four pictures from Lightroom, they get converted to JPEGs, right? Is there any chance to leave everything as DNG?
I think it’s because technology and ease of use has improved past the point where we are creating substandard quality images with unsuitable equipment and it’s now more about capture of moments immediately. Can you imagine trying to take Glyn’s quality of pictures with an iPhone 3G
Well to be fair this was a well lit scene. Try doing something like this with your phones sensor it wouldn’t look very great. Granted the times are coming where a mirrorless/dslr may not be needed but even with software bokeh etc it’s not perfect and your phone can’t optionally zoom 200mm etc. I think there will always be a need for mirrorless/dslr cameras but a phone can take your everyday shots and you can print a few too with nice quality.
While smartphone cameras have come a very long way, there's no way they give you the creative flexibility of even your old D200. And they won't, until the come up with a way of providing an adjustable aperture for your smartphone lens.
@@glyndewis Not a true aperture and not the range of a traditional lens. Plus, f8 on a tiny sensor means higher ISO and noise. There is no way you can do all the things on a smartphone that you can with a decent camera. Not even close.
Ok so we are now going to see incremental improvents with each new phone generation so that we will have a reason to purchase the "new" and better phone. Phones will take better photos on ver 14 then 15, then 16 then 17 and on and on! However, it won't end there for serious photographers! Along with newest phone, we will also need to get the newest camera.
It's called 'embracing technology' , not being a dinosaur and just enjoying the process of taking photographs without snobbery or elitism over the kit used ... that's all 😉
Samsung made Android based cameras that were really good, all the advantages of a phone but with a much better form factor. Too bad no other manufacturers took up where Samsung left off.
