JohnnyQ90 Is love me one for my desk but I see it always boils over. Is there a way to seal or stop that?
@davew6998
@davew6998 6 лет назад
vaiojoe the boil is too harsh, just lower the wick for a smaller flame. You will still boil the water just not such a hard boil
@vaiojoe
@vaiojoe 6 лет назад
Dave Oh My main concern was at the threads. The relief valve doesn’t seem to give off much.
@davew6998
@davew6998 6 лет назад
vaiojoe watch the video again the water isn't coming from the thread it spilled over from the piston side. if you have a bigger air gap above the water it won't over boil up into the piston, or have a smaller flame. you need to balance the flame to the boiler size, you wouldn't run this engine with a blowtorch.

Dave Oh Either way awesome machine work. awesome novelty.

Steam engines have incredible torque for the size compared to combustion as the simply build more steam pressure if it stalls.. The slower it goes due to load the more torque it outputs.

@brassandbricks7701
@brassandbricks7701 4 года назад
What you are suggesting is called a "condenser". It's essentially a big cooling tank into which the engine exhausts. The steam condenses (hence the name) and turns into water that can be pumped back into the boiler. This way you lose very little water and can go a looooong time on a single filling ;)
@JamesWillmus
@JamesWillmus 4 года назад
Such a thing exists. Unfortunately, since nothing is 100% efficient, water being heated, used, and cooled repeatedly would not work forever.
@alnoso
@alnoso 4 года назад
with a truly gas-tight seal, a condenser and a small pump of sorts the water would not need to be refilled basically ever. the energy comes from the fuel, so it's not like it would break the laws of thermodynamics. the problem would actually be not creating a water hammer due to the extremely low pressure zone you'd be creating because of it

Do you think 'modern steam' has a future in residential/camp sized engines that use multi-fuels? The Stirling engines don't have much torque, but the modern materials available now make the neat little models more scale-able. It seems like commercially available steam engines have always been either huge or small models. The technology could be up graded for practical off grid use.

What you suggesting is something that every nuclear powerplant does. Because you do generate entropie (not usable energie) when converting heat energie into electricity. You have to transfer the entropie out of the system by cooling the exhaust gas down to a liquid. Then you can reheat it and re use it.
@fastchill
@fastchill 6 лет назад
This would also increase its power because of the created low pressure zone by condensation. Bringing the water back to the same reservoir might not be possible since it's under pressure.

To: Clayton game-hughes, A Stirling engine runs on WARM (not even HOT)-AIR!! Some are even solar powered!! Also, Stirling engine uses no water and operates at a MUCH lower RPM.. so, no, this is NOT another kind of Stirling engine as it also produces MUCH more power than a Stirling engine of anywhere NEAR the same size. The steam engine came first anyway.

Look for Steam oil...it will add compression.. Add a radiator to Cool the water and recycle.. Then add a Solar lens.. use the Sun to heat the system.. Add a generator and away you go.. They say a Steam turbine at Full is the best for efficiency.. based on Fuel used..

yep.. if you seal it up with Glass on southern sides, this thing will even work in winter.. Using an alternate, you can Switch the water to Run inside the home for HEATING, bathing and soforth.. OR a settling tank, Insulated to hold Hot water over night..
